      Also, they did very little tests on Ellie and there was scientifically many things to do before killing your only immune patient. The path they took was medically really unwise and stupid. We've had patients immune to deadly diseases for centuries with still no cure and thousands of labs working on them. We have known for decades that 1% of people are immune to HIV yet there is still no cure. It's a trolley dilemna except it's not kill one person to save a few hundred thousands, it's kill 1 person for basically 0% chance to save anyone. I'd rather believe that eating Ellie's flesh gives immunity than a single doctor can save the world with voodoo medicine. Their whole basis of reasoning is "her mother told us Ellie was born before she got bitten". To me the doctor had a savior delusion.
      Discounting the fact he wasn't even a doctor, he was at best still a student during the cordyceps breakout based on his age.

    For me, I don’t think it’s a question of whether Joel made the right decision or not, it’s that neither he NOR Marlene gave Ellie the choice to make her own, informed choice. They both took the decision away from her - in different ways, but still away from her - by lying to her.
    EDIT: Whoops, wrote my comment before I got to the part where Greg says the same thing 😅 But yes, agree - they should have let her decide.

    • @chelscara
      @chelscara Год назад +14

      At the same time, they needed to give her a bit first. Like Marlene should have told Joel and then Joel could have admitted to Ellie going through so much trauma that asking her this is asking a suicidal teenager if they’d like to die and she needed/deserved time to heal mentally before being asked to sacrifice herself for something that is still not a guarantee.

    • @WoodlandT

      @@WoodlandT I agree in some respects, but with what Ellie had just gone through with David, and the idea that he wanted to strip her of her agency - not to mention everything else he wanted to do to her **shudders** - it hits even harder that neither Marlene nor Joel gave her a choice either. Plus, yes, I know she’s still a child, but a child that has gone through hell and back, and shouldn’t that afford her the respect and responsibility to make her own choices? But like you said, a brilliant dilemma.

    My god this was such an emotional episode (I've never played the game). A few things if I may:
    -I found Ellie's sorrow so sad to see-clearly the trauma from David affected her. I found Ellie laughing feeding the giraffe moving, as interacting with animals really is healing for people who've experienced trauma.
    -Hearing Joel admit he attempted to take his own life made me super emotional, not only seeing Joel say he's happy he failed with tears in his eyes, but I imagine it was very emotional for Pedro, knowing that he lost his mom to suicide back when he was younger.
    -The ominous music playing during Joel's rampage was so eerie....
    -Consensus on Joel's decision: I totally understand where Joel was coming from...he didn't want to lose another daughter, but the ominous music playing during his shooting really gave the feeling that this will have severe consequences. I also don't think it's fair for Joel to lie to Ellie like he did, but again, I understand where he is coming from. I feel mixed feelings-nothing is simply right or wrong.
    Sorry for the rant-I had so many thoughts, thanks for reading. Looking forward to seeing Bella and Pedro bonding together more for the upcoming awards circuit (assuming TLOU is nominated), and I can't wait for Season 2. Bravo!

My assumption is that within those few seconds the Cordyceps wasn’t able to move into Ellie fast enough which caused it to think that Ellie was already infected I don’t know the science on how that happens. Maybe the way the virus transmits from bite to controlling its host, is it has certain properties that have to grow on the brain for the process to finish. In Ellie’s case it only got a small part in her and technically was immune at birth. Marlene says to Joel in the hospital scene that Ellie has had it since birth. It’s powerful and when Ellie makes Joel swear to her on if he’s telling her the truth about the fireflies and Joel says I swear with a very serious tone and Ellie just has that unsure unconvinced look on her face because she knows deep down that Joel was lying but she just says ok because she’s painfully accepted Joel’s false truth. • @leojs5673
      @leojs5673 Год назад

      a cure isn’t impossible, the scientists at the time couldn’t have predicted that a different breed of the same fungus would exist that could tell the infectious one not to act up. it’s not even a cure per se, it’s just a different type of infection that prevents and reverses symptoms. that said, even though Joel did prevent a perfectly possible cure/vaccine from being cultivated in the form of the mutated fungus, i totally understand his decisions.

    • @troikas3353
      @troikas3353 Год назад +9

      I could see it planting that idea in the viewers head. But as an actual argument its kind of weak, the first scene was from a scientist half a century ago operating mostly on hypotheticals. Doctor's of that man's era would still have considered Ellie to have a clinical mental illness because of how she felt about Riley. A lot changes with 50 years of advancement. Meanwhile the scientist in 2003 was operating on only existing knowledge of something that clearly no longer entirely aligns with said knowledge. From the point of view of stopping the outbreak she was correct that there was nothing they could do, but that doesn't automatically mean they could never find an answer. While I can see those scenes narratively influencing an audience member more towards Joel's position as a story telling trick, I can't see either of them as actually compelling arguments against Marlene's. We've found cures and treatments for previously thought to be untreatable diseases many times through our history as a species.

    This is one of the best episodes in TV history, the iconic hospital scene couldn't have been more emotional than it was here. Once Joel goes on the rampage, the score along with the echoes of gunshots in the background and the dead stare of Joel, shows so much into his psyche. He already lost one daughter and losing another, who healed his original loss, might push him into the state he was in before. Pedro killed it in this episode. This show deserves every Emmy award.

    I feel like every one of these episodes is essentially an observational examination of this last choice.
    1. Is the ideal lost
    2. Is the installation of hope for more spurred by the self sacrifice
    3. Is the personalization of that hope, the reduction to ur person, and what it means to have purpose. And surviving till u find a new reason to live.
    4. Henry and Sam are the parallel. The question of what will u do for that purpose, does it make u a good or a bad guy?
    5. The idea of family, an imagining of the reimagined world, the questioning of whether he is worthy of being her protector or the right person.
    6. The two way protection/the two way investment/the chosen family
    7. The personification of the pain in the past that makes her vaccine purpose necessary…
    8. The purely evil do it for you contrast. Setting up the Henry and Sam bad vs true bad that brews in Joel.
    9. The choice driven solely by the chase of his ideal rediscovered.

    Also, I love how they explicitly showed that Joel felt fine killing the firefly who was surrendering with his hands up, but not the two other nurses in the operating room. In an expected story, you'd think that Joel was in a blind, "No survivors, no witnesses," rampage. The ending reminds me of a very valid point: Neither Joel nor the Fireflies gave Ellie a choice. The Fireflies were gonna operate on her without telling her she would die. And Joel lied to her after he saved her. Ellie was definitely determined to see the whole thing through. She was more than willing to help humanity find a cure. If the Fireflies had actually talked to her, she would have likely accepted it. Joel could have even been the one to explain it to her. Joel wasn't in the wrong for saving Ellie's life. The Fireflies weren't in the wrong for trying to find a cure. But if they had listened to her instead of choosing for her, the whole thing could have gone in a different direction.

    IMO Joel in the show is almost more tragic because he does go back to his old self when he's with Ellie. Ellie had said Joel has an asshole voice but once he comes to terms with how much he cares for Ellie his tone of voice when speaking to her is like the first episode pre-outbreak, even the way he stands and carries himself. Joel in the game opens up to Ellie the same way by talking about Sarah too but Pedro really played the two sides of Joel with more contrast. If you watch when he first met Ellie in that hallway then watch him talking to her about Sarah this episode he's two completely different people.

    I think the reason we all have felt identified with The Last of Us and the reason the videogame means so much for a lot of people is that there are always times where we feel without purpose or hopeless about the world we live in, there's always something or someone who changes our minds, something that's actually worth living for or someone we want to spent the rest of our lives with, the same way Bill felt about Frank in ep. 3 or the same way Joel sees Ellie.
