  • When I was refreshing my understanding of the good old 555 a few weeks ago, I spotted the Stepped tone generator in Forrest Mims' classic book.
Today I'm going to explore that cool sound maker
The Forrest Mims 555 book: archive.org/details/555-designs
Here are a handful of actual musicians who do a good job of showing this thing's musical capabilities:

This isn't the only way to do it.
It's probably not the best way to do it.
But it's how I did it.

Sometime I hear violins - so it does what it says!!
After too much exposure "When smoke gets in ... I hear violence" - great hit for 1980s band ABC.

The next step is to add another 555 and a 4017, with one pot and a switch on each of the 8 channels. This makes a "8 step baby sequencer" with selectable steps which really makes the Punk Console into a proper useful instrument.

There are a lot of creative and interesting ways this basic circuit can be (and has been) modified and expanded .

When I put my first Atari Punk Console kit together my goal was merely to obtain soldering experience. However, I chose kits that I figured I would actually use so I think it was logical that I would stumble across this classic circuit soon in my endeavors. During my studies of circuit I watched many videos and ran across one particular comment that expresses popular opinion quite well. I am not going to track it down so I will have to paraphrase. And while I don't share the sentiment I understand it. The comment was something like "I really wish this circuit never existed. It is very easy for beginners to build and it is the worst sounding thing on the planet. Kill with fire please." 😆

You need to make 4 of these and mix them all together

    Antonio Atarius
One of my favorite italian fine instrument makers from the 17th century.
Who..... similar to Antonio Stradivarius (Stradivari).... Later shortened his name to "Atari". And went on to revolutionize the electronics world.

Fun, but it reminds me of an 'open mic night' with some rookie bagpipers who may or may not have been consuming adult beverages.

They make great noise sources. Lots of timbral range for percussion sounds. Just have keep it fast and snappy.
