Atari Punk Console - exploring a classic circuit

- When I was refreshing my understanding of the good old 555 a few weeks ago, I spotted the Stepped tone generator in Forrest Mims' classic book.
Today I'm going to explore that cool sound maker
The Forrest Mims 555 book: archive.org/details/555-designs
Here are a handful of actual musicians who do a good job of showing this thing's musical capabilities:

This isn't the only way to do it.
It's probably not the best way to do it.
But it's how I did it.
Sometime I hear violins - so it does what it says!!
After too much exposure "When smoke gets in ... I hear violence" - great hit for 1980s band ABC.
The next step is to add another 555 and a 4017, with one pot and a switch on each of the 8 channels. This makes a "8 step baby sequencer" with selectable steps which really makes the Punk Console into a proper useful instrument.
There are a lot of creative and interesting ways this basic circuit can be (and has been) modified and expanded .
Cool video, I’m gonna have to binge your channel now
Welcome!
Sounds like a bagpiper falling down the stairs! Needs more volume to fully annoy :-)
Nice discovery with the cv!
You're a brave man to have a pint sitting on your workstation
The Annoy-O-Tron 2000
When I put my first Atari Punk Console kit together my goal was merely to obtain soldering experience. However, I chose kits that I figured I would actually use so I think it was logical that I would stumble across this classic circuit soon in my endeavors. During my studies of circuit I watched many videos and ran across one particular comment that expresses popular opinion quite well. I am not going to track it down so I will have to paraphrase. And while I don't share the sentiment I understand it. The comment was something like "I really wish this circuit never existed. It is very easy for beginners to build and it is the worst sounding thing on the planet. Kill with fire please." 😆
You need to make 4 of these and mix them all together
Take look at the "Look Mum No Computer" link in the description.
Antonio Atarius
One of my favorite italian fine instrument makers from the 17th century.
Who..... similar to Antonio Stradivarius (Stradivari).... Later shortened his name to "Atari". And went on to revolutionize the electronics world.
Forrest Mims ftw!
Fun, but it reminds me of an 'open mic night' with some rookie bagpipers who may or may not have been consuming adult beverages.
I would be disappointed if bagpipers *weren't* consuming adult beverages.
I built one of those with a 556 - Ah... the memories 💖
Sweet, got to try that. First thought was a Theremin, something I want to build
Theremin is another classic.
There are some versions that use light sensors instead of RF circuits.
They make great noise sources. Lots of timbral range for percussion sounds. Just have keep it fast and snappy.
I have an original copy of the Engineers mini notebook 555 timer IC circuits.
That's hilarious. I love it.
You did'nt tell us what you were drinking. (?) LOL.
It looked like DoppelBock.
I forgot
@@pileofstuff But you know that's the only reason we watch your videos. LOL.
@@peatmoss4415 I make Dunkel Bock... it's addictive.😊
I'm in Montreal this weekend. I t would be good to get some recommendations for good Canadian beer.
It needs a Subwoofer
😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬
My dog finds this video very annoying, you might be on to something, keeping racoons out of the chicken coup!
Damn I hate bagpipes🙂
Hmmm.. I wonder how many steps I'd need to add to the sequencer to get "Scotland the Brave" out of it... 🤔
@@pileofstuff IanScott Johnson might know 🙂
Accordions are worse than bagpipes.
@@albanana683 A close call🙂
RIP headphone users
Even worse on earbuds at 7am 😂
I edit wearing headphones.
Editing usually means watching/listening for about 4 hours...
Please don't quit your day job for a new career as a musician on these things.
I can be bad on lots of other instruments, if you prefer...
That is annoying like the worlds most annoying sound from dumb and dumber lol ffs lol
luckily at 50% noise level the voice was ok and the noise bearable
