      I wish that the actual games were more diverse. Its not too hard to find an arcade where I'm at but most of the games are either not my type or blatant cash grabs. The only good arcades are the retro ones imo.

      Jake Long that’s why I call them little kids casino because it’s all about play for a chance to win just like regular adult casinos instead of having games like Marvel vs Capcom Pac-Man racing games etc

    • @petree

      There used to be an arcade in my area called starcade. And they bred some of the craziest sf4 players. Issue with arcades in this day and age is that why would you pay game by game vs just playing at home online unlimited after paying once? Economically it's more sound. I will say that I caught the last leg of arcades in my recent years watching people play and their mannerisms and how they act and communicate with others. The culture is real, but it doesn't make sense anymore.
      Starcade closed for obvious reasons. Arcade running isn't a lucrative business

      @JorgeHighwind 6 лет назад +10

      @@YoungMachette I don't think they messed up, it's a fun game and people are still playing it in Japan (maybe not at that arcade? I went to Japan a year ago and Dissidia always had players).
      The only problems I see with the game is that it's on PS4 and not on PC. On-line focused games on an environment that forces players to pay for online play is not good.

    • @DuvJones
      @DuvJones 6 лет назад +3

      Dissidia it a rather complex game, and that in and of itself is a BAD match with the arcades. Arcades predicate themselves for simplicity (at least enough for people to walk in, sit down and play... the game itself is a different story), Katsuhiro Harada (whom manages Tekken for most of it's history) point to this being the reason that he still supports arcades in general since it also a really nasty filter (you literally have ONE chance to get the player to play, and if the game isn't dynamic enough... well...)

    • @JorgeHighwind
      @JorgeHighwind 6 лет назад +6

      @@DuvJones Gundam 3vs3 games are equally complex, or even more, and they are quite popular.
      And, as I said, a year ago people were still playing Dissidia at the arcades. I don't know about the current situation, but I don't think it has changed

      They probably only do that because it's a location test for a game as big as Street Fighter.
      I've never seen people clean the arcade cabinets in any of the arcades I visited in Japan... I did see them conduct repairs at HEY Arcade in Akihabara, though. It reminded me of the busted up arcade cabinets at the places back home... I don't think there even are any arcades left in my home country.

    The smoke adds to the nostalgic appeal of the Arcade Dens of the past that made them so appealing to me in my youth even though I wasn't a smoker. Visiting the test grounds for Capcom in London since 1992, I was exposed to degenerate gamblers and nomad-looking individuals that were masters at their craft, putting money in those machines for no other reward than to know they are the best. I do miss those days in London; seeing the Hong Kong KOF '98 champion burning a hole in the cabinet of his lit Marlboro Menthol while his bottled Sprite sat adjacent, was the hallmarks of champions visited. Great video, thank you!

    I think paying for training mode is pretty standard for most arcades in Japan. Agreed it's weird for SFV, though, since I imagine nearly everyone who's interested in playing heavily in arcades has had SFV since launch.

    • @DuvJones
      @DuvJones 6 лет назад +3

      That has been, for years, one of the bigger differences with arcades in North America and Asia. Training mode in the arcade build for Japan has been standard since, I would like to say Third Strike but could be wrong (it is a thing that started around the time of the FG dark ages).
      It would be weirder for SFV to omit that, since one of the bigger reasons for AE is the fact that the arcade scene still has quite a few players that have yet to make the transition to the game for lack of a arcade build. There are going to be players that make the jump from now, but that was still quite a few left in the dark or still playing USF4

    I feel pretty sad about the fact that it feels like I've grown past the need to go to an arcade when I've actually got the games and setup I want.
    Kind of an anti post, but these past two decades really proved something to me about the industry and it's place among just regular gaming. Invite some friends over, play the games all you want without an operator/distributor imposing all the limits based on business operations. Turned out to be a real eye opener for me once I put it in that perspective.
    Still miss being at arcades though.

  • @RayTCz

      Levers or buttons never feel sticky or dirty in my experience in Japanese Arcades. They clean them well and users also take somewhat good care. And in every arcade there's hand wipes so you can clean the stick and buttons yourself and clean your hands. In Tokyo you can always find another arcade spot. I was in Japan for a year and almost every day i played Tekken 7 in the arcades and if one place was crowded and full of cigarette smoke I just walked to another arcade nearby and could play for hours and hours without being bothered with smoke. I only needed to know 4 different arcades for that and that was just basically within one block in Akihabara and there are tons of arcades all around Tokyo and Japan.
      Another thing that might surprise you in Japanese larger arcades is that the noise level is really high. Few times I couldn't even hear the game I was playing.

    Assuming there was no smoking in the arcade area, being able to play and interact with other gamers in the arcade is a great experience. Besides observers, anyone can just drop by and have a few games, which is great for any competitive or casual fighting game community, to motivate and keep the interest in the game alive.
