  • In this multi part series I build a vertical twin wobbler steam engine. This engine is a design by Elmer Verberg and is the second engine featured in his book Elmer's Engines.

That was just awesome. I am trying to make my first steam engine, and all I have is a SB lathe and a drill press. Looking forward to more videos like this. Your closeups are great, and the instruction is the best. ...Ken

Thank You very much Ken, that is very encouraging. All I have is SB lathe and drill press as well. To help with the milling aspect of my projects I made the milling attachment, and it has been performing great. The second part of the video should be out sometime tomorrow. I do have a little 4"x12" Barker horizontal mill but it is currently unusable. It is still in pieces being rebuilt.

So far I've made two wobbler engines of Elmer's. It was a learning experience to work on such a small scale, but fun none the less. His engine designs are available online for those interested. A quote from the website "The plans on this page are in the public domain as per the wishes of Elmer who wanted the plans for his steam engines to be offered to as many model engineers as possible." I just have to decide which of Elmer's engines to build next.

Thank you for your excellent videos on Elmer's #2. I have watched them all a couple of times in preparation to build my first engine. I think I have everything I need in my scrap bin but except a large enough piece of aluminum for the flywheel. I was wondering what you thought about a brass flywheel? Would it be too heavy for the engine to run smoothly on low pressure?

It should run fine. I believe Elmer's original plans call for brass. I used stainless on mine.
Thank you for the kind words. I hope to get back to making videos soon. It has been awhile.
