Today, September 23rd, 2020, I unfortunately witnessed my first train vs. vehicle collision. This occurred at Centralia, Illinois. I went out to film a couple Canadian National trains at Calumet Street. Northbound CN train G86771 was the first to pass by. Southbound CN train B78841 is seen in the distance meeting the CN G86771. As soon as the northbound CN cleared the Calumet Street railroad crossing, the gates stayed down because the southbound CN was close enough for the gates to remain down. A driver then turned up their speakers to max volume, causing them to not be able to hear the horn of the southbound. They then proceeded to become impatient and drive west through the down railroad crossing gates, getting struck by the CN B78841. The driver did survive and Centralia, Illinois police officers and Smitty's Body Shop did an excellent job during this whole incident. PLEASE stay safe around active railroad tracks and be aware, unless you want to end up like this guy... Авто/Мото

How many bells, horns and gates do you need to not run a dangerous railroad crossing? Was the guy Drunk or just stupid. At the very least he should have stopped and looked and listened! On a side note I've been noticing reckless driving everywhere. The other day on a 5 mile ride to the hardware store I saw a lady run over an island in the road and hit a parked car..Then someone was backing up on a 6 lane blvd where the speed limit is 55 mph. He missed his exit! Then with the 15 mph school flashing sign on....... a car came screaming by me in the turning lane and nearly crashed when a car was in it yelling FU at the top of his lungs at me. Then a guy went down a ramp at high speed in a pickup truck his untied load shifted and he went into a ditch next to the guardrail. And the final coup de grace another crazy driver made a right turn from the left lane of a three lane intersection. I nearly got hit missed by an inch. And if all this i mean all this wasn't bad enough a driver stopped at the main door of the home depot with at least 6 cars behind him. Plenty of handicapped spaces were right there like 10 feet away. Heavy traffic coming from the opposite direction and an older woman and her daughter took like 3-5 minutes to exit the car. OK ignorant and inconsiderate to say the least. Then after passengers that just got out a young girl around 16 was looking down at her phone and as the driver that just let her off pulls away walks right into the car in front of me(I was 2nd car back) and gets brushed back. Started yelling you hit me you hit me to the driver in the car that started to go. No...She walked into the car he did not hit her even tho he was moving. What is going on with these people are they BRAINDEAD or something?. This is now what it's like to drive in Philadelphia. What is going on?. Have people become amazingly stupid and dumb? It's unbelievable. I've been driving for over 40 years and have never I mean never seen such idiocy out on the roads and streets. I'm Baffled. The loud music didn’t keep him from seeing the gate that was in his way. He had to go into the opposing lane to get around the gate.
It kept him from hearing the horn though. Turn that crap down!
Exactly, loud music is not the culprit. He had to have seen the 1.gate down, 2.lights flashing and then 3.move to the opposite lane. This person seems he would have not stopped either way even if he heard the horn, who knows he probably did for all we know.

Back in the steam days, the train didn't always win. But...the car always lost.
Only one thing gives trains the edge: *tonnage.*

@rO F Let me know how that works out for you.
One bumps, one missing rail on either side, or a turn to sharp, and the train derails. Destroying everything it slides into. I call that a win, too, it's all destroyed. XD
See, in my kind of photography, we call that "natural selection".

No matter what, ALWAYS obey the train's lights, horns, and signals, and PAY ATTENTION!
My friend was in a rush to get home. Her shift was over. She was tired. She wanted to get home to have dinner with her husband - they were newly married and just starting out their lives. It was winter. Her heat was on. Her windows were rolled up. Her radio was on. She didn't hear the train. Didn't see it until the very last minute. There were no lighted gates - only the white crossbucks. The engineer said she froze.
She was only 24.
I miss you, Nancy.
I'm sorry to hear that. Scary to know, because I'm 26.
NEVER go around the gates, When they are down, They are down for a reason.
In my youth there was a certain set of tracks that was used often, but the gates were notorious for acting up in the summer on the hottest days. Gates would come down on the triple-track, but there would be nothing in sight. You could see clearly almost a mile the one direction and about a half mile the other, so no trains. Most people would wait their due diligence and then go around the gates. I remember being there more than five minutes one time with my mom driving before the gates finally raised. No train. Then the gates came back down as we and another car were in-between. Still no train.
They eventually fixed them, but it was one of those things that happened pretty often there and I can't guess how many accidents likely happened because of it.
@@chrismaverick9828 I had an experience like this driving through part of rural Ohio near Bucyrus some years ago. Gates came down, train passed, gates did not go back up. I waited five minutes, ten minutes, nothing. I remembered two things from driver education: what happens when you get hit by a drunk driver head on on the interstate at 65mph and what happens when you get hit by a train. Visibility was good and I could see for over a mile in either direction - and other drivers had begun to go around me - but the uneasiness of going around a closed crossing gate remained because it felt so dangerously wrong, despite the obvious malfunction. I wish that man in this video, and the many, MANY crossing racers in the Los Angeles area felt as I did about going around the gates. Fewer horrors, fewer families destroyed during one second of stupidity.
When I was a kid, we lived in a rural area of Montana. There was a single road through town and you had to cross the tracks to get to I-94. The only other access was ten miles in the opposite direction. Often, trains would sit just inside the block making the gates go down. We would come up to the crossing, see that the train was sitting there motionless, and everyone would take turns weaving through the gates. Those trains would sit there for extended lengths of time and people living in that area had become accustomed to this. Since we could see that the train was stationary, we saw no reason not to cross - there was no danger.
Train..........1, car.............0.
@@chrismaverick9828 I remember that in my own town when I was a teenage back in the 70's Gates could not be trusted. They were always down without a train for some reason. Traffic had to go around as there was only two ways to get to the other side of town.

Every student who is about to get a driver’s license should see this video. There is simply no good outcome when train meets car. And it is so criminally unfair to the train engineers.
Sorta... in this case, there was a good outcome, in that the moron driver was able to walk away from the accident.
There are a number of train and auto/truck collisions on the internet around the world. It is not just here in the US. I saw one where the photographer was on the locomotive and a car hit the front steps of the loco and you could hear and see the slight jar of the loco from the collision(in Mexico).
@Bernard Stocco Ignoring the cheap shot at “liberals”, I totally agree that showing kids the real consequences is the way to do it.
@Bernard Stocco I say this not in any way as an insult, nor is it in any way limited to just you, but I doubt you know what liberals _actually_ do and don’t believe or want (there’s so much misinformation out there, being spread to divide us when in fact we agree on most things). In my experience, it’s conservatives who want to hide the truth from kids (I mean, look at how they oppose sex ed). But frankly, I think the whole protect-kids-from-everything movement (which I vehemently oppose) is more of a generational difference than one of political affiliation.
@Bernard Stocco “change what they don’t like”? Yeah, that’s called progress and democracy.
I don't think people realize how dangerous a train is at slow speeds. Even at 30mph, this would have been fatal if anyone was sitting in the passenger side seats. Their only hope would be side curtain airbags, and that car didn't have any, which means the head goes out the window and hits the train. The train has no cushion or crumple zone, just rigid high strength steel.
The train always wins, you could park an Abrams tank on tracks and the train would still technically be the winner in that collision. Sir Issac Newton is a deadly SOB.
And from a legal angle the only time a train can be at fault is if it can be proven there was faulty signaling. faulty signals risk is why all school transports and hazmat trucks stop at all crossings.
@@Kiror0_ Unless I'm mistaken, pretty much all bullet trains operate on dedicated rail lines that are either recessed below, or elevated above, any possible crossing point. There is simply no time for signals to work efficiently to clear a track before a train gets there at those speeds.

This video just proves that common sense is becoming less & less common everyday.
Somehow I get the feeling that common sense went out of fashion long before porkchop sideburns did
People don't think,it takes a train about two to three minutes to cross a street and some just have to hurry to an early demise.
To be fair, that’s because people don’t know where the term “common sense” actually comes from or what it means - we just take the words and interpret them without ever being given that knowledge. Most of the people I know don’t know either so it’s not like anyone is an idiot for not knowing. It just isn’t taught.
So what does common sense mean, then? Common sense is the sensibility that people develop from having experiences that are generally pretty common. But that doesn’t mean that everyone has had all of those experiences - everyone misses a few in their lives, so they lack the sensibility that’s developed from having had them. So common sense is literally just knowledge that’s gleaned from an experience that’s so common that nobody ever thought it was necessary to explicitly teach people about it. And so when someone comes along who never learned before, and nobody bothered to teach them, it’s ironically not the person who didn’t know better who’s at fault, it’s everyone else for taking important knowledge for granted.
However, this guy was most likely just arrogant and foolish, as are most people who are quick to run a railroad crossing. It isn’t many people who will be old enough to drive a vehicle, have a license to do so, and not understand that trains are bigger than cars and will always win.
“Common sense isn’t common”

One evening almost 35 year ago I was walking home from my carpool dropoff point when I heard a huge crash sound. As was my practice, I put my elder son, then about 18 months old, in the baby backpack, to give my wife a break. (Like many babies, he liked to keep moving, and he liked to be out and about, seeing the world. He still does.) Of course this time I headed north toward the crash site, to see the aftermath of an automobile transport trailer that had gotten stuck on the tracks, where the intersection crowned. There would have been time to notify the train driver, but 9-1-1 emergency operator didn't know how to get the message to the railroad dispatcher. (True story.) The trailer had been split in half, with cars strewn on both sides of the train. Three immediate reforms that came out of this: 1) the road was reshaped; 2) a warning sign was posted, and long trailers were banned from that crossing; and 3) 9-1-1 can now immediately forward a call to the railroad dispatch office.
9-1-1 operators/dispatcher still have problems like this on occasion.

There was an incident at an overland train station near to where i was when I was going home one night. The train companies were unable to give a full account of what was going on, other than 'major incident on the line' but all the passengers knew exactly what happened. how can i be racist, if you are the democrat that thinks all blacks are criminals
Appreciate you showing the entire thing, from the first train crossing all the way to the vehicle being towed away. No wild reactions either, just accepted what happened and kept filming!
It's really cool to see all the train cars rocking back and forth in the telephoto shot
Did the replace the new railroad crossing signals at Atlanta HWY in Florida of Florida east coast railway to not those cars and trucks go through anymore.
When will people learn that it’s not worth trying to beat the train.
Usually when a question starts with "When will people learn..." the answer is "Never."
@@Shinku_no_sanbun oh they will learn, it will just be too late
@@roxisdiecast Maybe. I could honestly see someone barely surviving and then doing it again later.
真紅散文 and they’ll tell their friends and family it wasn’t their fault
I've come to the conclusion that too many drivers only look about 20 feet in front of their vehicle.
I know a retired lawyer who used to represent MOPAC back in the day. He says, "Never try to beat a train because the train always wins." He also said his job was made easier by people who would sue the railroad because they insisted the train should have stopped for the car on the tracks. SMH at the stupidity and arrogance some people have.
I think I have only ever heard this piece of advice once before, but when photographing trains at a grade crossing, it is best to have the crossing behind you. That way if a train hits a car the wreckage is less likely to hit you.
How many trains can I get here on a weekend or a weekday and is morning the best time to come
Like the commercial says”It’s hard to stop a train “
The train did stop after impact, then continued on
It's "Nothing stops a Trane" (Train)....... Except a bigger Train.
Chevy, like a rock🎶
Stop.🛑 Trains can't.🚫🚄
Unless it's another train.
Being a die-hard railfan, I get excited whenever the gates drop! I slam on my brakes, whip out my phone, and start recording! I don't care if I have to wait! Lol
I like you.
reminds me once when i was at a bit of a weird crossing with a small section in the middle between the tracks. gates started going down while I was there and ended up caught between two trains
@@cpufreak101 Now THAT, is epic! Lol

-- May your battery always be charged. I've always considered waiting on a train as a little island of relaxation in my day; you know, relax, let the stress bleed off -- stuff like that.
Same here railfan from Boston
I remember when this video was brand new and was only posted 2 minutes ago, Time sure goes by fast...
"Stop, Look, & Listen" is written in blood.
Love how he tries to steer 'away and around' the front of the train just before impact LMAO what a goof.
No not a goof a dumass
Probably saved him from getting t-boned at 90 degrees though honestly
He’s a dumb ass. That Tahoe is totaled. He probably only had liability insurance. Lol.
Exactly 😂😂🤣 dumbasss to the 10th power
He never heard it coming, if he did, This would have been prevented.
Short of hitting someone walking on the tracks, this is a train crew's worst nightmare. My heart goes out to that crew and their families.
Grauwulf75 I feel sorry for the crew of the train.
The guys I’ve worked with don’t care about shit like this, Just happy to get the 3 day vacation.
Some engineers aren't able to go back after a fatal collision, and many who have a long career are involved in them.
Conductor Robes Same, most are just cars that they know they’ll just plow through.
If I was a Canadian national train engineer I would have to apply the emergency brakes
Remember. Tracks are only for trains. Not for people especially kids.
I'm just curious what the car driver had to say after all this.
uh "my bad" ? 😂😂
I have a feeling that this driver's oatmeal isn't ever instant enough
I work in critical supply support Warehouse industry. All of those containers have customers and likely secondary customers who depend on on time performance. You causing a delay that is sickening and inhumane just adds to the horror North America is facing.
Smh. Why does everyone think they can beat trains😡
Idk that’s just dumb and stupid that people do that Some People are Stupid Bc of that
Ikr idiots
Never. Ever. Blast your music when near a crossing
Yep I know
Lesson why people should NEVER try to beat a train
This video shows how long it takes to stop a loaded train after an accident with an automobile, I counted about 34 train car lengths for the train to stop and it took the train almost a full minute to stop.
I nearly got bumped by a train while the gates were up, but a rail worker waved his flashlight at me so I slowed to a stop before the train car entered the roadway. The train was obscured by cars on the second rail closer to me, being backed up really slowly, but had I been going 30 mph (and no one waved me down) it wouldn't have been pleasant. I am thankful for good people doing their jobs.
Notice how he blares the horn the ENTIRE way through on the next crossing. Just in case....
That is the way that one puts one's life into one's own hands when one can freely lose concentration while approaching a dangerous situation like going past lowered crossing railroad gates. Then one may not even hear the train's horn blaring until one feels the impact of the locomotive hit the vehicle broadsided. Of course, it is too late to undo anything.
You are required per policy to sound the engine horn through the entire crossing when the nose of the engine clears you can stop.
I noticed that as well. I don’t imagine the car driver learned their lesson as much as the train crew was reminded about the risks they face everyday.
Gates down, lights flashing, horn blaring.
Car driver: "You can't tell me what to do man! You're crushing my freedoms! I'm going!"
Crushing his freedoms along with his pride and car.
@@ivodozi Ya, right. This clown now has bragging rights. Can't you see him at a party bragging away.
He wasn't driving, he was 'Travelling'
Crushing that back of his car
i may race a yellow light now and then but train crossings are a resounding HELL NO, even with that loud music how do you miss the lowered crossing guards and the big flashing red lights???? Anyone know the follow up with the driver, was he okay?
I love how there is pretty much no damage on that train!
A car will never damage a train but a semi on the other hand would sometimes & possibly derail it too depending on the weight of the load being carried on a semi trailer & not to forget tanker semis too.
*Stop. Trains Can't.* Looks like nothing has changed for over 1 century.
I wonder if there could be a way to have over or underpasses in the future... It does however seem like it would be too much with too little gain. Trains seem to have evolved a lot but so little at the same time lol.
@@gordonilaoa1275 Take whatever precautions you want; some idiot will still find a way to end up in front of it.
Oh, things have definitely changed in the last 100 years. If anything, we've gotten *_dumber_* .
@@Dee_Just_Dee To be fair, we just seem dumber because we have world-wide media that shows us every stupid thing people do everywhere. A hundred years ago you wouldn't know if this happened outside of your own city.
@@Dee_Just_Dee Oh yeah Haha

Can I use part of the video in my compilation?
Bobby Hill: "That sounded a lot more trucky than I would have expected, considering how much train there was."
That guy needs a bumper sticker
"Darwin is my co-pilot".
Me: "I don't think that will buff out."
Driver of car: "Turn up da bass..."
It buffed out for the train.
Someone was looking out for that guy that day.....He was EXTREMELY lucky to walk away from that accident......
There are videos where locomotive trains like this one pass right through a city street, sharing the road with automobiles, and for some strange reason we never hear about collisions in those instances.
Driver of the Yukon should have to pay for any damage done to the train and/or the tracks and equipment.
Not to mention the delay in shipping all of that Material. I imagine trains have to stop for quite some time after an impact incident involving human beings. Even selfish, stupid ones.
He should also be required to pay for ALL emergency response costs, and any physical or mental injury care to EM's and train crew, accident clean up costs (tow truck, street cleaning )
He was listening to heavy metal & then he got some. Lol
Yeah right. Based on what he was driving I doubt he has much money.
We recently had a car vs train in my town. I live between a CXS and UP crossing. The CSX is about 300 yards from my house and there is a crossing right there, but it was the next crossing to the east where the accident was. It was actually a pickup and he blew through the crossing going right through the gates and destroying them. The train hit the back of the pickup and the truck flew into the air and rolled for hundreds of feet. Some how, some way, the single occupant survived with only minor injuries. Just miraculous. It turns out he was trying to commit suicide. Epic fail.
Wow, that is crazy and sad.
My cousin was an engineer and he also hit a car that was a suicide. Not only was the driver killed, but it also killed the driver’s 2 children that were staring at my cousin as he hit their car.
DAM
A train is always gonna win in an accident against a car & a lot of times whenever they hit a semi, they still win & don't derail.
I grew up with a level crossing just metres from my house. I recall at least three crashes from people trying to "beat the train". One was a double fatality
Did u see it?
@@entertainme7523 I didn't see it happen, but we heard it. My dad and I were first on the scene. The car was completely destroyed
What CN Grains Train and UP have Total Cars
Now that's funny. Did you see that guys Tahoe, there wasn't a straight piece of metal left on it. How do you explain this to your insurance company.
Caught a bad case of stupid!
no insurance
Auto insurance companies won't pay for attempted suicides. He can't use the "I didn't hear the other train because of the radio". Train horns use multiple frequencies and amplitudes transcending all other typical sounds for a reason. Even if you stand next to an ambulance at full siren, you will hear the train horn in the distance, clearly.
I'm pretty sure the police report & copy of this video and/or the cab camera will explain everything.
Pretty sure insurance doesn't cover this.
All I have to do is SEE a train and I'm like...... "nope."
You could even go as far as Final Destination and say, “what if that train derailed and flew off the tracks right towards me? What would I do? Where would I go?” Lmfao
I see one and let it pass.
Well you went viral!!
Can anybody explain me why some people here are saying that the Train driver has to pay some penalty and other things??
They don't...the train has the right of way.
