Easy to clip wings! By the time this video was out, you probably already had done it. I agree, the cover will be needed soon! We used that green cloth mesh nylon snow fence (EZ Fence) (not the hard plastic kind), it's great however not so great with snow on top of it. If you can rig up the net cover like a curtain that you can draw it up to one end of the run, that would be good for snow days, that way it won't collapse your run inside. You can make a 4x4 "T" posts across your run, clothesline wires would work if you have them to give the net some support. Or do some wide hoops. You will figure out what works for you! I love the gate! Great work Jen!
After giving it some thought, we put clipping their wings on hold until we get the cover up. Once things dry up a bit we’ll start the work on the netting. Very similar to your idea but we’ll use a ridge pole to support the center. It’s fascinating for us to go through the process of building this type of stuff, the possibilities are endless and make it so much fun to figure out what works for us. 😊
Cool! Great job on the gate Jen! The chickens are so cute !❤
Thank you!! ♥️ Appreciate the support! 😊
Livin and learnin ! Those that ignore history are destined to repeat it ! That’s a term all 3 of my kids know very well ! lol. They also know the inevitable question dad always asked …. What’d you learn and how are you gonna move forward ? Take care guys
Isn’t that the truth. Mistakes are opportunities for improvement. Thank you for the support! 😊
I left Maine in 2010 and still Miss it !!
She’s a beautiful state for sure!
Hi Jason n Jen,
Awww they looked like they were enjoying
themselves while they were out. Darn I hate
one flew out. We always had to keep our
chicken ran topped with heavy net, we used
pvc pipe and rebar ,,rounded roof like. It worked!
We had trouble mostly with owls 😳, they suckers
are mean! We even had big lights on at night, had
tin pans flying and banging around,,,lol
they came through the daytime a lot also. Weird huh?
Now on the ground predators we’re fox and minks
was the worst. Little boogers, farming is not fun 😂
Well I hope your dogs and chickens find a median place
and do well with each other.
Stay safe, warm and God Bless ❤
We think we have them covered (literally!!). So far so good!♥️
That’s awesome I love it 🥰
Thanks! We’re dialing it all in 😊
You did a great job on your first gate.
Thank you!!😊
They do make hardware for hanging a door on a t-post. I use them. Got them from Amazon.
I’ve seen them. We went with a wooden frame, but we’ll see what happens…I always find myself changing things around lol
It’s always a learning curve when you do something for the first time. As soon as I saw run, I thought he is gonna need to cover the top. Dogs can be trained to not kill the chickens. A lot of work best started as puppies. Is there a neighbor who knows how to clip their wings that could show you how it’s done?
This whole lifestyle is a learning curve! Our dogs are great but they herd us, each other, the cat, etc. I don’t think the chickens would stand a chance. The youngest dog still “plays” pretty rough too. As soon as weather permits we will cover the run for the fluffy butts safety. We are debating on clipping their wings…do we really need to with us planning on covering the run?? We will see!😊
clip the wings on one side only. it screws up their balance.
That’s what we’ve heard….however we put that on hold until we finish the roof…we may not need to do it.
I made the mistake of putting bird netting over one of my runs a few years ago. I say mistake because I found an owl tangled in it. Trust me, that was not fun to deal with but I got it free and it was fine. After that i went with plastic snow fence that had larger holes, green and stiffer than netting. I'm wondering if you could put pvc arched from your stakes and use chicken wire instead of netting? To be able to stand up inside the run....well, again, I learned a lesson and made mine taller afterwards so I could stand up straight. Made a huge difference in comfort level.
I can’t imagine having to deal with an owl tangled up… we are using deer fencing as the net. We’ll see how it goes. What we have in mind will give us plenty of head room 👍
Will there be a need to clip their wings if you are putting a cover over the run?
That’s a great question and one we’ve asked ourselves…we put clipping their wings on hold until we see if the net cover will work.
