I was a 20 year old soldier in Berlin. Heard this song constantly at the PX, in the mess hall and at the burger bar. It always takes me back to when I was young. What a golden age!
BAHS Class of ‘88. The Burger Bar, first Music Video Juke Box. It’s where I ended up if I ever skipped school. Music still in my head as I grab a Loop Bus to Dupple or Andrews. I worked at the Burger King across the parking lot from the PX. Good times.
@@KristineMaitland My memory is not as sharp on specifics, as it once was. Thank you for the reminder. They all put out such great stuff, and there were so many to keep up with, but shoot so many competing for the too spot. We had so many many, amazing artists, and we listened to them all.
That has to be one of the funkiest vocals ever recorded. And I like that the video has all the same insanity with weird lighting, dancing, some incomprehensible narrative featuring a special guest star, etc. that so many of the 80's New Wave and metal videos had.
I was in my mid 20’s when this was released! It got me to the dance floor every time it came on! I didn’t care who was on the floor, my white ass had to be moving!!! It’s not for just toe tapping, it was full on butt shaking time!!!
This came out in high school. Played at every dance, it was one of the biggest floor tunes my whole four years. It was such a strong hypnotic beat that by the end everyone was dancing in synch almost mesmerized. It was a tribal experience.
Great song remember being a kid riding with my dad jamming cameo lol 😂 fun times early 90s good bit after this song came out but it was still being played
Word Up was NOT Cameo's first hit, it was their first POp crossover hit in 1986. They dominated the R&B charts starting in 1975 . Word Up is their most recognizable song because of Pop radio crossover.
Sooo many great songs from them. She's strange, single life, candy, shake your pants, sparkle....... I could go on and on. Great rabbit hole to travel down. You should check out when Larry Blackmon was on the drums in the late 70s
Stationed in Germany all through the 80s this video was on loop at The PX snack bar over and over etc with other videos like walk like an Egyptian... Saw this video 1000 times.. lol. Good song .
I was going to post the exact same thing! Was in Berlin and heard this constantly at the little PX and in the burger bar. Ha ha. This song always takes me back!
I would describe the red garment as a codpiece similar to outerwear during the 1400s- 1600s for males. King Henry VIII made them popular because he had syphilis & his genitals were very tender to material brushing against them.
I suggest listening to Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" as an introductory song. At one point Billboard said this song was the #1 most popular song in history. This may be hyperbole, but indicative of his tremendous influence Dylan had over multiple generations. He received the Nobel prize for literature in 2016. Just a couple of accolades to highlight the importance of his long and productive career. He also played with the supergroup Traveling Wilburys. BTW, Word Up is a great song.
I genuinely think you guys would like "Like a Rolling Stone". It sounds good, it's well-written (duh) and so snarky. Not quite as snarky as "Positively 4th Street", but close, and a better song.
Damn, dudes! This came out one year before Smooth Criminal. So MJ must’ve been inspired- the same set, camera angles, similar costumes and even the group choreography!
I’ve been watching you guys for a few months. Great stuff. You should give Bob Dylan a try. Recommended: “Subterranean Homesick Blues” - one of the most influential ‘videos’ of the 60’s, “Hurricane” - message song, “Not Dark Yet” - deep late period Dylan.
Actually Larry Blackmon was wearing a codpiece not a cup or jockstrap. The codpiece is a 15th and 16th century Renaissance era European men's fashion accessory that is WORN OUTSIDE THE LEG GARB or pants in modern vernacular to protect the genitals. The Cameo in this video is the 2nd wind of Cameo. Cameo started out as a 1970s band the likes of the Isley Brothers, EWF and Larry Blackmon was the drummer and vocalist. They changed their music style and their look during the 1980s. Music became more energetic, funkier, eclectic and creating their own visual eclectic appearance which breathed new life into Cameo for the changing 1980s culture.
Fenom is correct. - Bob Dylan, Cher, Stevie Nicks - no can fk with them. Modern ears are weaned on Power Singers for better or worse but Larry's voice SLAPS! 80's voices were much more about the vibe and they were GREAT vibes :-D
Larry wore that cup to remind himself to , keep it check, cause all P ain't good P. Do yell realize how many thousands of women they could have and 100s they've already had? Instead of clowning his red cup, think about how much different his life is than yours. 💯
Listen to Fenom dammit...Bob Dylan Like a Rolling Stone. Listen to it. He has a nasal voice and a "voice that sounds like it came from you & me". Yet it works and the fact that he wrote it makes it that much sweeter. Give it a try..you never know and you've nothing to lose. Word up!
I *love* this song, but I only saw the video in the last couple of years when I was here on YT just pulling up stuff I hadn't heard in forever. So so so funny to see what I missed out on in childhood by being too broke for MTV.
Cameo made some of the most amazing jams...She's strange, Candy, Back and Forth, Single Life...Larry is a musical genius. Word Up was a POP hit, but they had several R&B chart hits. As Larry said..."I don't have nothin' to hide. I want the world to see."
I love the Bob Dylan reference. I think he doesn't have a great voice but he is a great singer. His voice with its gritty realism just works with the songs he writes and/or sings.
My eldest daughter went to boarding school with the video's director. I asked him, because I was a teen when this song came out, and I loved it so much, who came up with the red cod piece idea. Literally he did. And went out and bought it for the video. Just a little side note. I always found that fascinating.
YES! I was 19 when this was released. Always a road runner, windows down, taking those curves up in the hills of Tenn. on our way to the club's to hear it & dance again. Cameo was the Kitty Kats Meow😉
I had just bought a used car and was on my way to work. I saw a cassette was in the player. I pushed it in and this song was on. I cranked it up all the way while flying to work. Good memories, thanks.
The 80s were so weird. Love this song. I never realized that was LeVar Burton. It's been so long since I saw the video that I just never put that together.

This would ALWAYS get people back on the dance floor.
Cameo has a deeply rich catalogue of hits. They are incredibly underrated. Rhythm and Blues icons....
Yes, they are!!!
I was a 20 year old soldier in Berlin. Heard this song constantly at the PX, in the mess hall and at the burger bar. It always takes me back to when I was young. What a golden age!
Yes! It was everywhere. 😊
Even in Mildenhall .
Same story at R.A.F. Upper Heyford.

One of my favourite 80s songs!!! Next try Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc
A dance floor banger! ❤ Corey- it’s a red codpiece. Codpieces were external cups worn in the Renaissance. Protection from swords and all! ❤
“Talkin’ Out the Side of Your Neck” by them is relevant today. I hope you guys have a wonderful Sunday. -Amber
A suggestion: from that era - Terence Trent d’Arby - Wishing Well- official video. One of the greatest vocalists ever and funky as hell.
Ah yes that’s a good one!!!
Yes totally !!! Please react to it ❤
Wasn't that Janet Jackson first husband?
@@csrcjnNo. That was James DeBarge.

First reaction to Word Up
I've seen that recognized Levar. 😄
This song STILL works!! Gets us all singing and MOVING!! LOVE it! Thanks for reacting to it!!❤
Takes me back to the good ole days when music was good

Great song! One of those songs I totally forgot about until it was played at my 50th....it was great to revisit then, and NOW!
I was in my mid 20’s when this was released! It got me to the dance floor every time it came on! I didn’t care who was on the floor, my white ass had to be moving!!! It’s not for just toe tapping, it was full on butt shaking time!!!
I loved this song as a kid. My old school Italian father didn’t appreciate the red cod piece. 😂
that was the very best part of the video! A chef's kiss accoutrement :D
i was 15 in gay clubs, no race, gender difference, we just danced!
This came out in high school. Played at every dance, it was one of the biggest floor tunes my whole four years. It was such a strong hypnotic beat that by the end everyone was dancing in synch almost mesmerized. It was a tribal experience.
It never gets old.
Great song remember being a kid riding with my dad jamming cameo lol 😂 fun times early 90s good bit after this song came out but it was still being played
Y’all need to do the music video to their hit “Candy” if you haven’t already. It was the very first music video ever recorded in High Definition!
please react to "Candy" by cameo you guys will like it.................
This shit is still a jam today
This song makes me SO happy! Cameo song that makes me even happier? “CANDY” 🔥
I can hear that chorus right now

Ditto
IMO, I think you’re wrong to rule out listening to Bob Dylan’s music. You’re missing some really good songs if you skip him.
Cameo is in my top 5 Funk groups. Larry Blackmon sounds like Michael Cooper the lead singer of Confunktion.
Sooo many great songs from them. She's strange, single life, candy, shake your pants, sparkle....... I could go on and on. Great rabbit hole to travel down. You should check out when Larry Blackmon was on the drums in the late 70s
Absolutely..I second this.
This 72 year old was getting down to this back in the day. Still do. 😎
That red codpiece made me laugh every time this came on tv.

Dope track, as he flexed in the song they did their own thing music and style wise...
Word Up, an all-time favourite of mine. Glad you all like it.

She’s Strange , and also Candy are bangers by Cameo.
This was 1985.
