  • I show you how to seed start cucumbers, squash and zucchini and provide key tips for success. I also show you how to thoroughly prepare the planting hole for the plants and I plant them. The key for seeds starts is getting them into a well prepared bed within 3 weeks of germination. I show you examples of why that is a key.

    After years of watching the rusted garden and gardening in partial shade,I got a community plot with full sun.and got all the plants started in march had to wait till two weeks ago to get a tiller working.then I tore my bicep muscle off my arm at work.so Garry I now know how much of a pain it is to plant one handed. thanks for all your hard work.

    Hi Gary,
    Been watching your videos all winter here in Nashville and now implementing many of your suggestions. Everything is coming along perfectly. We're about a month away from our last frost date (zone 7) so we're still housebound on many plants except for peas and so forth.
    All this time though, my wife has been passing by the indoor garden and asking, "what are we going to do with all that food?" and I have to admit with only two of us, I need the Rusted Garden's advice on preserving what we have grown. Obviously, we'll eat as much as possible, give lots away to neighbors, but when fall rolls around, we better have a plan...!
    I haven't found any videos from any of the regulars on this subject either.
    Thanks,
    Paul

See the past 2 yrs I've been able to plant out after my last frost date this yr my last frost date was april 15th so I seeded everything according it was things you said 2 to 4 wks then get it out well this is my 3rd yr gardening and I thought I was running behind but now I got stuff that cant go out the longest I'd thought I'd have to wait is may first my cukes and zukes was 3 wks on 29th and I have some pickling cukes I did a wk before that now look like they're getting ready to flower do I toss them and start over itll be a waste but I really want to have success in my harden this yr especially

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад +1

      So they still grow and take off but I found it was slower as they were working on flowers and fruit. You can prune them off and let them roll. I would still start backups. Either way you might have to toss some. Which I dont like either.

    I tried out Cucumbers, but they haven't grown far, even in the good warm period that we had in May.
    But I think I know now what have gone wrong.
    1. Transplanted too early (before the true leaves emerged)
    2. Container is too small
    I wanted to try cucumbers, because my dad have done that before outside (some have said you need a greenhouse, but you don't)

This is my first year ever gardening and now I cant even pick up my pots because spiders are making webs between pots and such. Smaller than the longer vining crops. So they are better for containers.

    I had no idea that the plant becomes a bonsai if you don’t pls t it up soon enough. Thank you for pointing that out, I shall be more careful about watching the dates. I also didn’t know that there is a hush variety of cucumber. What is it called and how large does it get?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 лет назад

      So the cuke varieties will actually have bush in their name 9/10 times you look in catalogs.

      Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I just reread my question and laughed at all the typos. I’m glad you were able to understand what I was asking. Thank you for your reply.

    My soil i think is clay if its hard don't that mean it is because its not red but its so hard I have to use a pic are to break up I want to plant my blueberry bushes but don't know where to start I am also trying to learn how to compost and im a little overwhelmed I'm kinda a hands on learner I see what you're doing but I need someone in person to walk me through it as I do it if that makes sense I'm probably sounding like a complete idiot but it is what it is unfortunately an I could just be overwhelmed by the fact im also trying to learn how to ferment my chickens feed and I barely even had them about 3 months now and im first timer to this all just trying to get self sufficient in these times

    You say 10 days and then three weeks to transplant are you talking about three weeks after the 10 days of germination for three weeks from start to transplant

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 года назад

      Its not exact. You want to get them in the ground from germination anywhere from 3-5 weeks. 4 weeks is perfect.

    What the hell is all this? Bloomberg told me to dig a hole and throw a seed in and I get corn.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад +1

      It allows you to strart early, get mature transplants, plant sooner and get food to your table sooner. It is done when the outdoors temps fluctuate and are cold. Basically if you dug a hole and threw a seed it, it would just sit. But that way works, when you have a long growing season.
