She, of course, will not watch the full movie, but *spoiler* there's a scene where Will & Harper's visit to a Texan restaurant was pretty hostile - the following internet backlash was vile and their hatred for Harper on full display. Kind of contradicts her speech about bigotry being a perception issue on the part of trans people.
They do the same with racism, bigotry and prejudices.
Bigots somehow don't see their own actions as bad. Yet you say the exact same things back to them and they go into a meltdown and say you're being aggressive towards them.
Cognitive dissonance is required to be a bigot. And no critical thinking.

She’s lying and obviously didn’t watch the entire film. The reception in Texas was not good and resulted in them receiving weird looks and negative comments on social media. I was astounded by their reception in Oklahoma, which was generally positive, but several of the folks they interacted with were Native American.

To Emma, Sam and others: I'm trans and I really enjoyed watching this film. It's a feel-good film, with lots of comedy. It shows how Will and Harper navigate and help each other understand each other. It's empathetic and shows how going into it with genuine curiosity and support for a newly out trans person is one of the most beautiful and helpful things you can do for them. I recommend it!

In this case it may be different but don't assume your comment has all the answers. People can, (and do), have huge numbers of double standards. Myself included.
It's what allows some men for instance to say they love their wives and daughters to be incredibly sexist.
It's what allows some, (insert 'x' race here), people to converse, work and have a laugh with, (insert 'y' race here), and still be incredibly racist.
This will take time, people need time to change and see this from more than one angle and even when they've had the time and looked from numerous angles, it doesn't guarantee a positive new outlook.

My nephew recently transitioned, so now she is my niece. I've been a skater most of my life, I'm in my 40s, and I'm a gun owner who lives in a blood-red state. My niece is in her mid-30s and is married to a woman, and they have a teenage son. I only recently found out about her journey, and i guess because the reasons listed above, they were not that enthusiastic for me to know about it. I think they thought I'd be a transphobic or disappointed and wouldn't want them in my life. The only reason i was brought into the loop was her family recently moved closer to me and my sister, so i volunteered to come up and help them finish getting settled in. So on our drive up my sister asked me if we could stop somewhere so she could tell me something, so i was like yeah no problem, and she said just so it's not a surprise i need to tell you that your nephew is now your niece and she's been on hormones for a year or two, i was a bit surprised but said well you always wanted a daughter so congratulations. I think my family thinks because of my age, sexual orientation, and the state i live in that it would be difficult to process, but what they didn't realize is my wife's best childhood friend transitioned right out of high school, and i have 3 friends who have transitioned too and i have nothing but love for people who want to be their authentic selves. So when i saw my niece i gave her a big hug and told her how much id missed getting to see her and that i was so proud of who she is no matter what, she's an amazing person who's put in 17 years of service in the army and will be taking full retirement in 5 years. I don't get how anyone could not be happy for someone getting to be who they are meant to be.

@@Sugarman96 she for sure did, i felt a bit bad for a minute thinking it was insensitive but I told my friend who is also trans and he laughed too so I felt a bit better after that. I think it's hilarious that right-wing weirdos think that trans people have no sense of humor but all the people I know still love to laugh and tell jokes themselves, it's only when someone misgenders them over and over on purpose that they get mad about it. If you make an effort almost all of them are cool about you making a mistake.

Especially when who they are meant to be is a more sincere, genuine, compassionate, loving, grateful, wise and understanding soul. All of the trans folk I know or have met (which is in the dozens) are better people for their journey. They have come face to face with their deepest insecurities and fears and have emerged with courage, character and integrity as gentle warriors who step up to challenge hatred head-on with a lesson of love and acceptance.

My best friend is Straight, as is his wife, who I introduced to him. We're a bunch of middle-aged people, but he's still teasing me about guys just as much as when we were teens, way back when. In my experience, when people Know who you are, and what kind of person you are, the things that make you different just fade away into background details, just the individual things that they know about You, as part of your individual connection with them. Our respective very different sexuality doesn't matter - it's whether we like and respect each other, and what kind of people we are.
As a trans person, hearing someone deny the harm done to trans people, including the killings, actually fucking terrified me. Knowing that I could get hate crimed and they will NEVER acknowledge it...absolutely evil.
There are people around who understand and will stand by you. I love my trans brethren! Keep your head up!
Also they’re trying to remove hate crime laws about us so it never gets documented. It’s terrifying

Plus gender dysphoria is something everybody experiences at one time or another. Some people just need a haircut or a shave, some people need a new outfit or a workout, some people need introspection and potentially hormone treatment. It's a wide spectrum. It's very common.

They understand forms of comedy where someone else is harmed. Gallows humor, slapstick (3 Stooges poking each other's eyes out), mocking satire, mocking parody, juvenile pranks, caustic or biting humor, etc. They're both the first and loudest to laugh at these forms of humor. They're not so big on romantic comedy, self-deprecating comedy (unless the person self-deprecating is someone they dislike), irony, highbrow comedy, farce, etc. They often find the latter forms boring or scratch their head, "I don't get it."

I watched this a few nights ago, and it was really good. I was surprised by how real the whole production was. Will Ferrel is genuinely concerned and protective of his friend in a few locations where there's real danger for trans people.
I felt it, too. I'm a trans guy and after so many people being so cruel, I almost didn't watch it and glad I did but have to say... If I decided not to based on the trailer, I would have been wrong. I'm not sure what they could have done better, but... Yeah.
I had an Aunt who transitioned in her 50s and got very little support from the family, including myself. It was also before it was in the public eye so it was very weird to all of us because of lack of information. I never want another trans person to go through how my family and I treated her.
Brett is just seething that, just like her Daily Wire colleagues Ben Shapiro, Michael Knowles, and Jeremy Boering, their supervillain origin stories all involve being rejected by Hollywood and having to settle for this.

My father used to tell me about how he was homophobic as a young man, how everyone he knew was, how normal it was. He never had to challenge those ingrained beliefs...until his brother came out as gay in the 80s. This is precisely why the right so desperately wants to legislatively shove LGBTQ people back into the closet. Every person who comes out of the closet is a turning point in the lives of their loved ones, where they can choose to go on the journey to understand and accept this person they care about. They know that most people aren't ideologically commited to hatred to the point that they're willing to destroy relationships they care about over it, and that scares the shit out of them.
I'd say it's split honestly, some are ideologically committed to that extent and some aren't.

I was witness to the effects of the assassinations of JFK, MLK, RFK, Woodstock, Moon Landings, and Vietnam protests - on the moods of my parents, teachers, and peers. Because that's the lens through which all is filtered when you're not even 10 years old. I watched the Watergate hearings in social studies class in 7th grade, and listened to the resignation of Nixon while smoking weed with some buddies 2 years later. The gay rights movement, and celebrities "coming out" was news through my high school years. I was teaching 5th grade, and was following the story of Christa McCauliffe, and had the Television going in my classroom when the Challenger exploded, and had to deal with the emotional fallout of that with both students and parents. I am a currently therapist and have been for the past 25 years. All of the history I have observed, and felt, have informed my views and perspectives. I am a left leaning moderate, politically. I assure you that I am confronted with more close minded conspiratorial thinking from younger people than those my age .

I work in a very conservative environment, one of my fellow employees had a gay kid, i would listen to my boss and other coworkers talk to him, they would talk like they supported him, but behind his back, they sure as hell were not supportive
Yeah, that behavior is every attempt for plausible deniability in case they're ever confronted. Personally, I can *always* tell when someone's support is just cowardice to voice an opinion they know will cross the line.
I watched this doc the other day. I loved it, it was funny and heartwarming and sweet.
what is very telling is that all her comments are based on the trailer.

In slight defense of her (I mean the very slightest), I can see how some people bristle. I mean it's awfully odd that so much energy should even be used to present this movie. There are more "relevant" issues in the world. (End of my slight defense of her). Conversely, I reckon there's room for this movie in the world just like there's room for "relevant" stuff. It's a personal story that she and Will wanted to share.

I remember I ran into one of my childhood bullies on facebook. We had an argument or whatever. We got over it. We were cool. Then one day he just has a womans name and I'm like... I obviously was confused but I thought about what I would say for a few moments and I just said "nice to meet you, XXXX" and went about my day. This is like 10ish years ago now. To this day, I never really understood but I don't really have to understand to support people who are trying to find themselves.

Imagine missing the empathy gene. And being proud of that. The movie was a wonderful movie on friendship and support. I saw it.
A friend I've known for 30 years came out as trans a couple of years ago. I was briefly nervous about it since I didn't really know how to address it, but once I met her in person it dawned on me she's still the same person she's always been and we just continued on as usual.
That "transition" ad break was hilarious, thanks Sam.😆
