First chapter Friday Novel in Verse: Brown Girl Dreaming Read Aloud

Friday, April 29, 2022 - In this week’s First Chapter Friday video word nerd Amanda Zieba shares the award winning novel in verse Brown Girl Dreaming. She also shares a writing tip from the poet author, Jaqueline Woodson, and an activity for students who want to improve their poetry writing skills (using this book and Breakout by Kate Messner). Book Blurb: Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement.
