Australia: Country or Continent?

- This video is basically a follow-up to my video 'America: Country or Continent?' ( • America: Country or Co... )
This video looks at the double meaning of 'Australia' in the English language. As well as explaining the terminology of Oceania. A geographic region in English, but a continent in other languages.
I explain the difference between Australia, Australasia, and Oceania. Terms which are sometimes used interchangeably but which actually have different meaning (albeit not always clearly defined)
MUSIC:
Hammock Fight by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com/music/royalty-...)
I'm Australian and I don't like the term 'Australasia' because neither Australia nor New Zealand are a part of Asia. At school, I was always taught that Australia was the country and Oceania was the continent, I tend to agree with this.
Daniel H The thing is though, the name doesn't imply you're part of Asia. The name "Australasia" is derived from the Latin for "south of Asia".
You're right about that, but somebody who doesn't know the Latin roots of the word Australasia could easily make an assumption that Australia is grouped in with Asia. And even South Asia can should as a part of Asia, like Spain is Western Europe, and still a part of Europe. Oceania is a good name for the continent and islands.
Daniel H I get that you think that Oceania is a good name for it but that's not how convention works. You are saying that it is confusing that the continent should have the same name as the country of Australia. But to fix that problem you are suggesting that it should have the same name as the geopolitical region Oceania. You are just exchanging the confusion from one name to another. If you really want a compromise and refuse to have the continent be named the same as something else, it might be best to name it after its continental plate: Indo-Australia. But right now, the continent is perfectly fine as Australia.
WonderWhy In school in Australia, we are taught that Australia is the country and that Australasia is everything which you described as Oceania. Basically Australasia is everything in our corner, excluding the Indonesian provinces, which we class as south-east Asia. I believe as an Australian, we feel closer to New Zealand, PNG and all the other Islands in Australasia than Indonesia. This is due to Indonesia's ethics and legal system heavily differing from our own, as seen in the recent execution of two of our citizens. So if you were to ask an average Australian what their definition was, it would probably be the same as mine.
We learn this in New Zealand to its Oceania

Australia is the country, Oceania is the continent. Ta-da!
It's too egocentric 😝
What is the definition of a continent, tell me?
chileo1 There isnt an exact definition. But if you supported that Australia shouod be a continent alone, then how would all these thousands little islands be categorised? You cant exclude them. And dont forget that we have to be practical. So, in every continent we have also put all the islands around them.
I don't think they should or have to be included? They should be part of the region but why do they belong as part of the continent. They aren't part of the large Australian landmass or the Australian tectonic plate either. In my opinion they belong to the region of Oceania but not the continent of Australia, and I don't think Oceania makes sense as a continent by any traditional sense.
chileo1 Then Iceland should not be in Europe. Oh and Madagascar should not be in Africa. And I forgot about Hawaii. And what about Greenland? If people had your logic, geography would be a mess.
Lets just call it Oceania
Albanian Eagle In our language it is already
Let's not and say we did!

+Ben It wouldn't really make sense if Oceania was a continent, it would make the whole concepts of continents even more vague.
+chileo1 I don't understand how it would make them more vague. A lot of the time we already call it Oceania and nobody really refers Australia as the continent anymore, it typically just refers to the country. We won't have any more confusion any more if we just choose to go with Oceania.
+wowitsbryce Actually, MOST people are taught the 7 continents model. Almost everyone I have ever met doesn;t call it Oceania. Most is because they were taught "Australia" like most western countries, or some realise that Oceania is in fact a region not a continent. You can call it what you want but technically calling Oceania a continent is wrong based off whats currently accepted and taught as fact.
continent
noun
"any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, Australia, Antarctica)."
Calling Oceania a continent completely fucks that definition. Oceania could not be LESS continuous its basically tiny islands and water. I'm just telling you what you think is wrong vs what most of the world considers to be true, thats all.
+chileo1 Just changing the name of any type of area doesn't change it a single bit. The only reason it is defined that in the dictionary is because there is no exact easy definition, so they do the best that they can and give current examples
+wowitsbryce Um no, In Australia they are NOT taught to call it Oceania LOL. How ridiculous would it be for Australians of all people to get their OWN continent wrong. Since they have proper schools and education there, they are taught the 7 continents model like most western countries and most of the world including Russia and China. I have Australian friends I can ask if you really want? I can find you 50000 things defining Australia as a continent, and 50000 things saying why Oceania isnt one. Heres a nice simple one from national geographic for you!
www.nationalgeographic.com/siteindex/geography-faqs/
"Oceania is the collective name for the lands of the Pacific Ocean, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Oceania is a convenient way to name these areas, which, with the exception of Australia, are not part of any continent. But Oceania itself is not a continent"
Heres ANOTHER en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_(continent)
"Oceania is often used to denote the region encompassing the Australian continent"
How can I tell you, the way you view it, does not coincide with reality or facts. You need to allow yourself to be educated because in this case, I am simply correct and its not a matter of opinion or an open debate.
To summarise
1. Australia is a continent.
2. Oceania is not.
Na let's just take it easy it's Oceania.

Australasia = Continent.
Australia = Country.

@MisterTeeBag You at least call it Sahul to avoid confusion. Because nowadays what is a continent and what is not depends on conventions, and the convention that there's a continent called Australia is probably the less convenient, as a country called Australia does already exist.
@MisterTeeBag You I thought the "continent of Australia" was understood to include New Guinea, so the country of Australia isn't the whole land mass.
This is simple Australia is a Country... And Oceania is the continent where Australia is located...
New Zealand is in Oceania not Australia...
+Thiago Racca Wrong! Australia is the continent, comprising of the Country of australia plus Guinea etc. Oceania is a REGION that happens to contain the continent of australia among other things.
+chileo1 there is a thing called continental plate with is landmass of the continent with the islands are located on...
The continents don't disappear on water...Oceania is not a region is a continental mass with include besides his continental mass mass a bunch of islands...
+Thiago Racca A huge amount of Oceania isn't even on the Australian plate, so not even sure why you bothered making that point. Oceania comprises of multiple plates. Oceania is a region, australia is a continent, and also happens to be a country also.

I got taught this was the continent en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_(continent) And anything else was covered by regions, but they should not be confused with continents. I guess referring to the region may be nicer? But it doesnt make oceania a continent because it simply is not.
Oceania may not be a continent plate, but why is Iceland in Europe if they are in different continent plates? Because of cultural and historical reasons. That's why Oceania is a continent, even when it's divided into different continent plates.
So, Oceania is, historically and culturally, a continent, for the same reason that makes Europe and Asia two separate continents.
We should call the continent "Oceania" or something like "Pacifica"

i believe this is said because of the linguistic technicality regarding the word "continent" itself. by definition a "Continent" must be a continuous landmass , which islands and archipelago's are not. to include non-contiguous island nations in the definition of the word"continent" would also force island areas such as the carribbean to become a continent under such a definition.... hope this helps , it seems kinda rentative but is the way the words use limit the scope...
Steve Von Doom then Europe and Asia would be one continent...
i think europe has its own continental shelf that begins west of turkey/dead sea area...

From my experience with atlases, 'Oceania' is a legitimate continent. (I'm from and in North England).

Hey Joel Galilee , have fun killing attercops with neet buzzer skin keks. lol jk
I grew up learning that Australia was a continent AND a country (I'm Australian). But now that I'm older, I tend to refer to the continent as 'Oceania' because it encompasses our neighbours and those tiny Pacific Island nation friends. And there's less confusion, too!
In my opinion, there should be two types of continent, geographical and political. Both with exact definitions to avoid confusion.
Four geographical continents including The Americas, Afro Eurasia, Oceania and Antarctica (only the main land being part of the continent). All other places are just islands and not part of any continent including Iceland, UK, Japan, Madagascar and New Zealand.
Seven political continents including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Antarctica. Any land not part of the other six continents are part of Oceania.
Side note - Panama should be part of two continents similar to Russia, with the Panama Canal as the border.
As I said, my opinion, please do not argue as I won’t agree.
I like your thinking. Maybe the political should just be referred to as a political region instead of a continent!
if we were to have that I would think it would be better to have Geographical continents as the continental shelf and anything off a shelf is not part of a geographical continent and Political continents include islands that are off a continental shelf into their respective continents
Panama is PART of South America. IT was part of Columbia until Americans decided they wanted to build a canal there so they manipulated things to get Panama to secede from Columbia so the USA could have their own client state there.
Panama is seperated from colombia by a huge rainforest like gap. People from panama think that theyre apart of central america for a reason.

Australia is literally the land mass of the continent while the islands are the reason why the british say it’s called Oceania. The continent is called Australia and Oceania.
Bro, the definition of a continent is a large continuous landmass surrounded by water. Oceania is a region of islands, not a large continuous landmass. The Caribbean is also a region of islands.
By your logic, the Caribbean is a continent.
Next topic: why on Earth is Europe a continent?
***** Eurocentric world view. They conquered the world, so they want to be seen as different in every way possible.
***** The biggest reason was because of geography, the caucaus and ural mountains to the east are large mountain chains that geographically creates the main divide. This was seen as an easy way to divide it up because the people on the western side (europe) and the people on the eastern side (asia) were very different in terms of their respective ways of life collectively.
TJW595 This can be applied to so many other places in the world that are culturally different and have mountain ranges, much, much, much, much higher than the puny caucuses and the Urals, there is no logical geographical reason as to why Europe gets to be a continent.
***** because there is brown people on the other side XD
***** Geographic science was never as exact as it is today, accurate maps of the world were developed long after continents were named.
If one is to categorize continents based on continental shelves, there would be Afro-Eurasia, The Americas, Continent of Hawaii, Continent of Iceland, Continent of Samoa, Continent of the Azores, Continent of the Line Islands and about thirty of so other tiny continents. That's why contrary to popular belief, the UN and the world accepted view of continents for classification reasons do not align, and nor are they intended to align with geological continental shelves.
In Europe's case, it comes down to the ancient Greeks. They deemed they had less in common with those directly south (Africa) and those directly east (Asia) than those directly north or west (Europe). They found those to the east, as Aristotle put it as "wanting in spirit" compared to those of the north and west.
The Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity (especially Catholicism as oppose to Orthodox) further cemented these massive divides between Europe (who were predominantly Christian) and Asia and Africa who were in the eyes of Rome and eventually the Papal States "un-christian".
The massive expansion of The British Empire, the French Empire, the Dutch Empire, the Portuguese Empire, the German Empire, the Spanish Empire, the Italian Empire, the Belgian Empire and the Russian Empire all across the planet brought this form of world classification with them as they caused massive cultural upheavals to other nations and installed their own methods of schooling based along lines of accepted European thought. So as India and Mongolia have very little in common, the influence of the European powers in the 18th and 19th century and their world views has allowed this system to remain the most accepted.
Russia is the sticky issue here however. Although it is in both Europe and Asia, the Duchy of Muscovy who become the leading force in the formation of pre-Soviet Russia was culturally European rather than Asian, so they towed the European view of continental classification rather than any alternative.
Hope this helps.

It’s like saying that Canada is in a continent called the United States. I’ve heard other people got taught the right way that Oceania is a continent but officially the continent is called Australia. You would think Australia should be honoured to have the whole continent bear our name but I think that countries can’t also be continents vice-versa so in my opinion, shared by most Australians. Australia is a country and Oceania is the continent.
You can also ask yourself how multiple islands can be on the same continent in the first place
@@Bynasf Yeah there’s agreed definition of continents just what we see they are
@@mitchellsmith300 the word is still very vague. It’s a concept basically every definition of the word contradicts every continent model
@@Bynasf agreed. Continents have come so much more then a group of countries connected on land, they are used as a way to categorise countries so as long as we aware of what a continent actually is I don’t see a problem with it
@@mitchellsmith300 The definition of a continent is a large continuous landmass surrounded by water. Oceania is a region of islands, not a large continuous landmass.
Which 'continent' would all the worlds islands be on if you went strictly by 'tectonic plates'?
So why are Europe and Asia separate continents when they are one land mass
+John Fault It's a matter of convention, culture and history
some people said that on this side of the line is a continent call Europe that side is going to be Asia, other people agreed, all other stuff like continental shelf is just to make the claim more legit. In short, it's not about the land mass it's about what people agree on
+Miguel Lopes and Russia?
+Ike Jaramillo what about Russia? They expanded theri territory as far as they could way after people first made those tiny circular maps with asia, africa and europe seperated by a T
+Miguel Lopes I was taught in school that Eurasia is one continent, and Europe and Asia are simply kind of "regions" in that continent. And the border between Europe and Asia is the Ural mountains (in the middle of Russia).
+Kingdom of Stornia - Development and to me Europe and Asia are continents with like you saidwith the ural mountains as border and eurasia is a supercontinent. Like I said in the begining it's a matter of convention, nobody can say the other person is wrong, because that is how the other person was taught.

In Australia if your Australian it’s country because if continent all stats would be independent
Australia: Continent
Oceania: Continent
its just based on diffrent definitions of Continent, Austrailia is a Geographic Continent, but just a part of a Geo-Political Continent
As a New Zealander, I hate the term "Australasia" for two reasons. Firstly because it lumps us kiwis in with the Australians even though we are and always have be separate. And second, because where the fuck does Asia come up in to it? NZ isn't part of Asia, it should be something like Austral-Zealand.
Also, New Zealand is on the largely submerged subcontinent of Zealandia. NZ is, by far, comprises the largest above water portion which New Caladonia coming in second
TheWolfHowling Like I said, I think the term 'Australasia' is a redundant term. The subregions of Oceania should be - Australia (the country), Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. That way New Zealand is just part of Polynesia and not part of 2 different subregions.
Also, about the name 'Australasia', the name comes from Latin, meaning 'South of Asia'. And since 'Australia' comes from the Latin for 'southern', that's why the names are so similar.
WonderWhy do you think Scotland should be independent from the UK
WonderWhy That's interesting, I didn't know the Australia derived its named from the latin for south. I will admit that I probably had an inkling that it might be something like that due to the Aurora Australis, aka the Southern Lights, but never put much thought into it. Anyway, South of Asia is a stupid term as Asia as the continent is over 44.5m km2, comprising of around 30% to the world's land. Given that arbitrary definition, here are some other countries you could include in Australasia; Cyprus, Madagascar and a large chuck of the Africa continent, everything in the Indian Ocean, Fiji, Tuvalu and even some Alaska islands that swing under Siberian Russia
"Australians even though we are and always have be separate" - That isn't entirely true. New Zealand was once a part of the colony of New South Wales (Southern Australia pretty much) for over fifty years.
Bradley Marshall I did think that I would have to add the caveat "as countries". Yes, New Zealand was once part of the gondwana landmass with Australia at few tens of millions ago.
I live in Colombia (South America) and, in my mother language, Spanish, Australia and "los Estados Unidos de América" (USA, for the English speakers) are countries, whereas América and Oceanía are continents. Period (or at least that's how I learnt it). In English, it seems to be to much confusion with this two terms, America and Australia.
Hi ! :) I'm from Australia and we never refer to australia as a continent, we call it "Australasia, or "Oceania "!
***** it seems reasonable :) then why do other English speaking countries refer to Australia as both? It's kinda unecessarily complicated
LeoSienna The english and specially americans love to complicate simple things, case in point the imperial measurement system and farenhaeit degrees.
miguelsaurio55 The imperial unit system is horribly complicated. 12 inches is one foot and three feet is one yard and [insert number here] yards is one mile. And it's even worse with volume units, with its pints, fluid ounces, cups, gallons, and who knows what else. The metric unit system, or, better said, the International Unit System, is much easier and straightforward.
md83AR erm...thats what I said in my previous comment...
I’ve always been very confused about this. I like that the term Australasia exists because I am half Australian and half Kiwi (New Zealander), so most of the time I just refer to myself as Australasian
Don’t know about other languages but in Polish it’s common to just call it “Australia and Oceania” which I feel is just simpler in terms of conveying what you’re referring to.
Bro, the definition of a continent is a large continuous landmass surrounded by water. Oceania is a region of islands, not a large continuous landmass. The Caribbean is also a region of islands.
By your logic, the Caribbean is a continent.
You english speaking people are so complicated, your metric system, your continent, your politicians...
Obdulio Rockefeller Where are you from then?
from América
Argentina
Obdulio Rockefeller hahaha Where in América are you from, fellow Americano? xD
From argentina pal, from argentina

deupjhr41 literally said it in the first continent... although he said pal, which leads me to believe he may be from the US... :P
In dutch we aren't sure about the name of the continent, so we call it australia or oceania at the same time.
Yep...
We do?
Sondar12
Maybe that weird kid.
we germans call it australia AND oceania. fucking long name for the smallest of the continents. Pretty much Luxembourg.
DeathdwarfRising
Liechtenstein would like a word.
KrabbGaming Trinidad and Tobago. I win.
What about using plates as continent markers ? I guess that would be chaotic, too, though, since some nations sit on two or more plates.
If we did, a portion of Russia would be in North America lmao
I’m from Central America so if they separate America into south and north where does that leaves us ? And I always thought Australia was a country in Oceania
Oceania = Continent. PERDIOD
+gac3la Yep, is not that hard.
Splendido Splendente
now, time to teach "america is a continent, not a country"
+gac3la Wrong, Oceania is a geographic REGION, that just happens to contain the continent of Australia, as well as many other non continental countries. Did any of you go to school I mean honestly.
+Rohan Zener Dont bother, hes wrong about everything he says.
chileo1
so australia suddenly became a continent? wow
As a geograph I don't like when you say "it is true for english language"... Geography is biggest victim of "we teach what we want and is true for us so respect it because is like this in my language"...
Geography should be international and teach the same way... not according language...
+Dominique Thomas It 'should' be but that isn't always possible.
"Geography should be international and teach the same way" i know what you are trying to say but it just looks and sounds dumb when you actually think about it. how are we gonna make international something that changes ever so slightly?
oceania is a geographical region in uusonian english, but maybe not all dialects of english.
Nizte Nitze yeah, like why would You have to learn to read the time when it always changes.
And why would You have to learn to write or speak when the language is in constant change.
Before 2017: AUSTRALIA IS A COUNTRY AND A CONTINENT WOAHHH!!!!
2018:
*Australia isn't real*
Originally, when I first learnt about continents, I was given a large atlas book. It claimed that the groupings were: Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia and Oceania, North America, South America. I can't remember if it ever said these were "the continents" or if it mentionned Antarctica as being one, but this is how I've always seen it.
Here are all the continents in the world:
1. Afro-Eurasia
2. America
3. Antarctica
4. Australia
Take this from people living in that region...Oceania is the name of our Continent.
We just simply call it 'STRAYA.
West part of New Guinea island or Papua island is part of Indonesia wich is Asia.
But all new Guinea / Papua Island is geoghaphicly located in oceania.
So, where is West papua located, Asia or Oceania?
IT'S
CALLED
OCEANIA

NO
IT'S
A
CONTINENT
25lover25 Oceania is not technically a continent, Australia is though.
OCEANIA
IS
THE
CONTINENT
@@pinfigure772 NO ITS NOT
YOU DONT LIVE IN AUSTRALIA NEW ZEALAND DOSENT HAVE A CONTINENT BISH
It's so weird how each country has it own definitions of continents.
In Brazil we never refer to the continent as Australia, we use Oceania. We also divide the Americas as North, Central and South America. But Mexico is part of North America, and not Central as the map on the end of the video shows.
Im English, and when referring to the Continent somewhere in the south pacific I say either Oceania - meaning all the islands in the south pacific, or Australasia. I never use Australia for the continent.
*1:14* also, Armenia is not recognized by one U.N. member. It is not recognized by Pakistan.
in Poland in school i was told that continent is called Australia and Oceania 😀 i think it is quite resonable. Interesting is that in my country lots of people consider 3 Americas North, South and middel (Panama ,Costa Rica,Salvador , Gwatemala,Nicaragua,Belize)
I'm from New Zealand and I say Oceania is a continent. It includes Australia, New Zealand, Papa New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga and all those other Pacific Islands.
I love this channel, you should get more subs.
What's next? Georgia: Country or State?
Georgia: country or state? Answer: yes
Is oceania at war with east asia or eurasia this week?
Is Oceania really a continent when most of it is literally the Pacific Ocean? Australia is the only sizeable landmass in the entire region that could be called a continent.
Is the Papua nueva Guinea Islan part of it? Or New zealand?
In Portuguese, Oceania is the continent and Australia one of the countries.
Like in Spanish
and to all learners of my conlang, bizarrelang.
Are you voting yes or no? What's gonna happen afterwards to Scotland? Discuss.
i like potatoes
He can vote for whatever he wants, but if I was Scottish, I would vote no, because an independent Scotland would be weak.
Maybe you been watching the beeb too much lately, it's not as simple as that.
It would be stronger, it pays the U.K thousands of dollars each year
Having a bigger government budget doesn't mean anything in terms of a "stronger economy", case to point, Japan has one of the brokest government in the world, yet no one would ever say that they have a poor economy.
ok, but what about Central America? I've noticed you considered countries like El Salvador and Panama as part of the North American continent
North America is not a continent, it's a region in America.
I’m Australian, in Australia Australia is both country and continent, country Australia does not include Papua New Guinea and definitely not the Indonesian side as that is INDONESIAN. The continent of Australia is mainland Australia, Tasmanian and all islands ruled by Australian government. All other neighbouring islands do not directly belong to a continent but instead are included in the Oceania REGION NOT CONTINENT. So that’s why Australia is both country and continent
Hey, if you don't mind me asking...where are you from? I initially thought you were Scottish, but you sound more Welsh here.

If every island has to have a continent what continent is the British Indian Ocean Territory in?
asia
Canada is in North America and they're called "Canadians", Mexico is in North America and they're called "Mexicans", United States is in North America, why aren't they called "United Stations???????
For the same reason we call North Koreans, North Koreans instead of "Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea"ns. (which is the official full name of the country, both North And South both still claim the whole country and just consider themselves Koreans, everyone else seems to differentiate between north and south)
We could call Sri Lankens...Srï Lankã Prajãtãntrika Samãjavãdï Janarajayas if we could pronounce it.
British people are called British instead of "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"-ers. (which is the official full name of the country)
The United States of America...Americans.

Country. There is no debate. Australia is not a continent as it's part of Oceania which ia a continent.
Watch the fucking video.
i'm new to your channel so i was wondering if you were Scottish. (please answer this)
We have a unique and melodic video that is all about Australia - great for teachers and students alike!
I have always had a fascination with world geography, but I do not recall ever hearing the name Australia refer to a continent (from over here in the UK). The continent has always been Australasia (not mentioned until quite well into this video), or occasionally Oceania. I didn't realise that these two things referred to different areas; that is interesting.
Hi Angharad
How are you today ?🌺🌺
Mighty Zealandia shall rise again!
nope
kasufert Yup.
I dont think it ever did...
(I know you are being sarcastic)
Nah if they rise up we'll send over a kangaroo regiment and sort it out
lol
As an Australian I always knew it as "Australia and Oceania" Never as "Australia" and "Oceania"
That was a great video!!
I'm Australian and I use Oceania to refer to the continent.
Put auto-captions on:
"In a previous video of Maine" LOL
After watching this video, this is my view:
The world has 7 continents
Africa, Asia, Europe and Antarctica are undisputed
North America and South America are split where they are today (Panama/Columbian border)
All of Polynesia, Micronesia, Australasia, New Zealand AND Melanesia are under the term “Oceania”, however, the two regions of Indonesia sharing the island with Papua New Guinea are part of Asia due to not a geological split, more of a cultural split - Indonesians look more towards their fellow Asians, and Papua New Guinea’s natives have a lot in common with the natives of Australia, New Zealand and the rest of Oceania for that matter. To make the Asia/Oceania border more defined, anything west of the Papua New Guinea border is Asian, anything east is Oceanian.
I disagree, Africa, Asia, and Europe there is no divide by the ocean between Europe and Asia there for Eurasia but there is also the Suez canal and if we ignore that we have to ignore the Panama canal and then there are four continents America, Afro-Eurasia, Oceania, and Antarctica
Well excuse me. But there's no such thing as a panamanian/Columbian border, there's something similar but it's called panamanian/colombian border
Saber Storm Academy - you’ve watched CGP Grey, haven’t you. Also, I never said I was ignoring the Suez Canal
I learned in school Eurasia is a continent. Asia and Europe are regions.
I'm Australian and in childhood I learned that Australia by itself is both a country and a continent, with the understanding that all the continents are by nature surrounded by water. So New Zealand and any countries in Oceania lie outside the Australian continent. Also it's a matter of opinion but I've never felt comfortable with the idea that Australia is an island. Technically I guess it fits that definition but I think it's just way too large and it seems paradoxical to me to define it as both a continent and an island.
