Javanese and Indonesian may share the same cultural roots, but their approaches to politeness are worlds apart. In this video, we dive into the intricate Ngoko, Krama Madya, and Krama Inggil levels of Javanese, which reflect social hierarchies and deep cultural traditions. We then compare these with the simpler yet respectful use of terms like "Bapak" and "Ibu" in Indonesian. Through example sentences and cultural insights, discover how these two languages uniquely navigate respect and social relationships.
🌟 About Tim Keeley:
Tim Keeley, a seasoned professor and language enthusiast, brings four decades of experience living in Japan and mastering multiple Asian languages as well as many European languages.
At 7:24, you’ll notice that the Krama Madya and Krama Inggil sentences, “Kula nedhi sekul” and “Kula nedha sekul,” appear almost identical, with only slight variations in word choice. This highlights a subtle yet important aspect of Javanese speech levels. While Krama Inggil words like dalem (I, me) and dhahar (to eat) exist, they are never used in the first person, so the highest level you can go to is Krama Madya. In Javanese philosophy, using Krama Inggil to refer to oneself is considered inappropriate because it reflects self-aggrandizement, which goes against the cultural emphasis on humility. These honorific terms are reserved for addressing or speaking about others, particularly those held in high regard, such as elders or social superiors.
This brings us to a broader distinction that is often misunderstood: the difference between formal/informal registers, which are present in many languages, and the complex system of speech levels in Javanese. Speech levels in Javanese-ranging from Ngoko to Krama-aren’t just about formality; they are deeply tied to cultural values and relationships. They reflect not only respect but also social hierarchy, roles, and the speaker’s humility. This makes mastering Javanese speech levels more intricate than simply knowing which words are “formal” or “informal.”
For example, while in English or Indonesian, you might adjust tone and vocabulary to sound more formal, in Javanese, you must consider the listener’s age, status, and the context, all while ensuring that your word choice aligns with cultural norms about self-effacement and respect. This layered complexity is what sets Javanese apart and makes its speech levels fascinating yet challenging to learn.
@kilanspeaks saya kagum dengan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris Anda, keren... 🎉🎉🎉
@ ah biasa aja, Pak. Tapi terima kasih pujiannya 🙏 ꦩꦠꦸꦂꦤꦸꦮꦸꦤ꧀
Love the polemics regarding this subject. The subtleties of Javanese language are profound. Culturally, one is required to select words which does not appear to big note oneself, but this can be illusory, as any Javanese person can attest. The levels of language in Javanese are a reflection of the immense wealth of the region, based on wet rice cultivation, which allowed the creation of a complex aristocracy (along with the attendant courtiers and artisans) with a lot of time on their hands. I maintain that your typical Javanese can perceive a slight from a hundred metres!
Perhaps an unfortunate example is the, 'Silakan duduk' because in Indonesian it could also be, 'Duduk 'yo!' or 'Mari duduk' which reflect degrees of formality similar to the Javanese examples.
complex language in simple explanation. Mantap!
Actually, Javanese language has 7 level of politeness, although nowadays the common used are only the 3 you mentioned in the video.
inggih

Kok cik akehe pitu. Opo wae iku?
1. Ngoko (ngoko lugu)
2. Ngkoko madya
3. Ngkoko inggil? 😂
4. Krama lugu
5. Krama madya
6. Krama inggil madya
7. Krama inggil (lupa namanya)
Akehe cak, nggarai ngelu ndasku😂
Even the word "fall" Can be various in Javanese ex. Falling forward: kejlungup, falling backward: nggeblak, falling slipped: kepleset falling dragged forward: ndlosor: falling aside: njungkel, falling in love: aku tresno kowe mbak 😂
KEJEGLONG, KEPLETRE, KEJEGUR

But those are not register based varieties as discussed in the video.
As I'm Javanese I used 4 different Javanese Languages.

bro waking up the javanese childhood nightmare for using the wrong word to their parent
And a flashback of flip flop to the butt or calf
I believe with it complex three tiers system and very rich vocabularies, Javanese language and culture is more than 1000 years old. To have unique name for every animal offspring/cubs in Java means you have plenty time to contemplate.
Well the first dynasty of javanese recorded was circa 6 century, Sailendra dynasty. Although the dynasties changed overtime, one family fell and another rose, one particular aspect tahta never changes, is the "universal lord" that javanese adheres to. Kings and emperor were seen as one, but in this current era it was more like which political family or legacy run the goverment in indonesia. Although jogjakarta king is regarded as the jure overlord. Many javanese especially in the east never accepted their liniage because they were seen as a usurper, more importantly they were also the only javanese dynasty that failed to rule the waves courtesy to Amangkurat I fiasco. So it is well understood that javanese Identity and cultural integrity had been preseved and was continous regardless of the passage of time. Javanese changes but their essences stay
@@HeavenlyrulesAgree. You are Javanese. Javanese only has one lord/King/Ratu. It means Javanese only believe in one strong/ultimate King who has Pulung.
@@Don69Muk indeed. Just like ken angrok, although he himself was a usurper, he was easily accepted as the universal/ultimate lord in the wake of how domineering he was as a conqueror, succesfully beating the previous isyana dynasty who had insidiously fractured java into two, panjalu and kadhiri. This divisiveness led to javanes losing hope in both branches of the family. Thus by the time ken angrok slaped both their faces, javanes people ceremoniously welcomed him. Hence javanese tendency and culture to unite under one banner continue.
4:47 Finally, Worst nightmare of my early grade school, Learning English, Indonesian, Javanese at same-day
Oh, God! This bring me back my childhood nightmare. I chose to speak formal bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) to my parents due to this complexity.
Tingkat dasar pertama :
1.Bahasa jawa Ngoko lugu
2.Bahasa jawa Ngoko alus
Kemudian ada krama dan krama dibagi 2 :
3.Bahasa jawa Kromo alus
Oh dear... As a doctor, in javanese society you suddenly "jump" the hierarchy despite your age. The dread when you're talking to an elderly person who addressed you in krama inggil and you start to overthink which level of politeness you have to use... Also krama inggil? Krama madya? Definitely not ngoko but... 😂😂😂😂
8:07 eat..krama = nedha =nedhi ; krama inggil mangan/eat = dhahar
1:56 The real Javascript.
7:51 just a little correction. I think "lunga" doesn't mean come, instead you can use "mrene/kene" for the context calling someone at the Javanese (Ngoko).
East Java 2
Central Java 3
But Solo & Yogyakarta have more than 3 politeness level Java language
very insightful video thank you !
Glad you enjoyed it!

Aku --> iki --> iku --> ikoh --> kuwi --> koe
Intine aku lan koe ki uwadoh..
😅😅
The original word for king actually ratu, later on replaced by "raja" which originated from india
For example Kedatuan Sriwijaya,Keratuan Lampung,Kraton Jogjakarta all of the means palace or where the king reside daily
Datuk and Ratu or in malaysia atok which mean grandfather

krama alus bener bener bikin adem
Eat ->
Dhahar ( krama inggil )
Nedha or Nedhi ( krama madya )
Mangan ( Ngoko )
Ma'em ( for children )

Salam dari INDONESIA ❤️🇮🇩
In javanese you cant make krama inggil for yourself... That why "i eat rice" in krama inggil "kulo nedha sekul", but for the the elderly or the vip it gonna "panjenengan dhahar sekul"
In this terms "eat"
Ngoko: Mangan
Ngoko Alus: Nedha (the limits for ourself)
Krama Madya: Nedhi
Krama Inggil: Dhahar
Where are you going?
I would say in Krama Madya is “ sampeyan ajeng teng pundi?”
hampir semua bahasa punya tingkatan, era modern disebut formal dan non formal. hanya sedikit bahasa yg tidak mengenal tingkatan. yg pernah ada kerajaan pasti ada minimal 2 tingkatan.
tingkatan dlm bhs jawa bukan formal dan non formal. beda.
Beda kang. Java sejatinya ada 7 tingkatan tapi sejak era majapahit disederhanakan jadi 4
1. Kawi (Brahmana dan Pandhita)
2. Krama Inggil ( Raja )
3. Krama Madya ( Orang Tua)

Well. Javanese have a many dialect and accents it depend of the region.

Bukan satu2nya tp slh satunya.
Contoh : bhs afrikaan di South Africa
Tok pisin di Papua New Guinea
Ya, bahasa indonesia esensi-nya adalah indonesian variety of malay
Zulfia bener, bahasa indo lahir 28oktober1928, jangan memudarkan sejarah
Eat in krama inggil is "dhahar" not nedha
the context for the example was right, there was never 'kula dhahar sekul' that can be accepted as polite.
there was no krama inggil that refer to oneself, at most modified krama madya. you use krama inggil to refer to other people (who is socially accepted to be placed higher than you), so you only use dhahar if it was in sentence like 'bapak dhahar sekul'
@adrianusatmawijaya4049 ooww ... yes u rite,. Thats for older ppl. Not for ourself. Thanks for the explanation...

Will Ling add Javanese?!
correction for 'hello' in javanese. for ngoko we do use halo (not really javanese) but we mostlu use 'hai' (more friendly and same as indonesian) and for kromo (both madya maupun inggil) we do not exactly use greeting like this (hello), we simply greet them (our superiors) by asking them 'how are you'. 'sugeng rawuh' means 'welcome, so only be use if they arrive at some place, not quite sam as 'hello'.
for 'please sit' or 'come sit here' is not 'lung, lungguh kene' for ngoko but simply 'lungguha kene' or 'mrene, lungguh kene'. 'lungguh kene' means 'sit here', 'mrene' means 'come here' as in 'lunga' means 'go away' (not as asking someone to go away. it is if you said in angry tone, but 'to inform' that someone already or about to go. as for kromo (madya and inggil) it is correct.
as for javanese language used in wayang kulit (shadow puppet) or wayang wong or any traditional performance, they do use multiple levels of the language. do not expect all javanese people understand the language they use for the performances. even in daily routine not all javanese people understand kromo madya or kromo inggil.
fyi: i am javanese, born, rised and still living in java area and using javanese in daily basis. i do use kromo madya, i like wayang and other traditional performances and yet i do not understand the high leve of javanese they use in the performances especially the conversation between the gods or speak to the gods. 😁

it seems that you've got incompetent reference about javanese language.. mangan, madang for ngoko level, in krama madya you will have nedha or nedhi. they just the same word. for krama inggil you will get 'dhahar" for eat in english. note. krama inggil will always words for other people, the older ones r the nobles, krama inggil can not refer t yourself or speakers, for example..it is OK you said "aku lagi madang" (iam eating) in ngoko style, but when you speak to your parents or other older people, than you have to say "kula nembe nedha" in krama madya style. But you will never be allowed to say "kula nembe dhahar"(i am eating)in krama inggil. speakers can not put themselves in krama inggil. Krama inggil should always be for someone else, not for yourself and even it is not for your close relatives. krama inggil will always be a kind of respect to other people not for yourself or someone close to you.
Imagine the confusion for new non Indonesian people that stumble to this video ..... Japanese Javanese ............ which are which lol

Sundanese 15% population
But at the second youth convention in 1928.But everyone agreed not to use Javanese and Dutch.
And create a new language. That is Indonesian with Malay as its base.
Even though Malays only make up 4% of the population. Malay language is very simple and get Chosen.
Malay has been used as the lingua franca in the dutch east indies centuries prior, it's not necessarily simpler. The dutch figured that it'd be more effective for them to learn malay than teaching the locals to speak dutch

4? Damn, I'm sorry but Javanese have 6 at the minimal

this is really bad for society to be hierarchisized. Tbh growing up in javanese culture, its traumatic. All you care is others you give zero care about yourself. at the end if you don't go away from this you will be left with bitterness because you please everyone else who don't care about you.
You have to tell your own perspective to Japanese society also. Dare you?
@ Japanese I don’t know. But javanese is boss level climax style feudalism like a boss can do anything to subordinates. Subordinates have 0 rights and bosses expect « upeti »s as a sign of loyalty of their vassals. Far from being servant leader we would like to see more today, it’s the opposite. The leader wants to be served. Yeah be Javanese if you like.
