Its a double meaning, actually. Marilyn Monroe in an afterwind also refers to the famous picture of her standing on a grate over a subway while the wind from the subway passing blows her skirt up. And the nuclear blast thingy too.
Does anyone else get chills when he says “now Willy Wonka, major Tom, Ali and leia have moved on” or is it just me? I think that line is just beautiful.
It's not supposed to be beautiful, it's referring to the fact that in modern times our focus is always on the wrong thing. Whilst Trump and Jong Il nearly brought the world to nuclear war, society was more bothered about which celebrity had just died, hence Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Ali and Leia. Referencing The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy (hence the title), when the world ends only the dolphins will have paid attention and will have fucked off before it occurs whilst we remain to face our inevitable doom, because we were too distracted by unimportant shit to see it coming. It's a fucking genius song with amazingly intelligent lyrics. It's somewhat ironic that you find the line beautiful. Maynard is a fantastic lyricist. This, Delicious, Judith, The Pot, Right In Two and Aenima are absolutely amazing from this stand point.
Bravissimo, Hiphip hooray! What a glorious display. Mind and body blown away. What a radiant crescendo. Falling thunder, blaring horns. Was this all I could afford? One more thing, I won't be bored. Tongue out for mushroom cloud confetti.
This song makes me feel like I'm sinking to the bottom, and watching a sea turtle swim beautifuly. As the sky lights up...people always think about themselves..it's sad.. the world isn't ending. It ended along time ago.
run from me I know lot of people don't really like it but I do, however there are probably two songs I'm not crazy about at all but aside from that I love just about every song
They are not end of the world songs like bands have been doing, but rather countdown songs, (my interpretation.) I appreciate that the songs are motivating in the sense of...1) get off your ass, don't be overwhelmed by all of it, 2) take action, 3) change is not necessarily a bad thing, 4) unite and work together, 5) be on the right side of history.
Humans believe they are more intelligent than dolphins because of cities, digital watches and nuclear weapons. Dolphins think they are more intelligent than humans for the very same reasons.
I am a fan of the first record solely other than a handful of tracks off of their other commercially polluted records but I'll tell you what,,,,, what an amazing breath of fresh air this song is to the mainstream! I love maynard!!! Fuck it the entire band man! Amazing song
jean-claude Simonetti The title and the corresponding lyrics about the dolphins are in reference to a book called “ Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy” Where the dolphins along with mice are the 2 smartest things on our planet with “MAN” being 3rd all the while thinking we ate the 1st. In the books when the earth is about to be destroyed the dolphins do try to warn us, but we don’t get it. So they say so long and thanks for all the fish, and leave the planet. If you have never heard of it, give it a read. They are amazing books, very entertaining. You will understand once you’ve read a few, but I’ve tried with no luck to fall and miss. Maybe you will have better luck!! And never forget your towel!! LMAO I am kinda tipsy right now and just realized with your reference to digital watches that you do in fact know what the hell I was talking about. Lol sorry, just so many people really don’t know what the song is referencing it’s kind of amazing to me.
It's all part of the Civilization Cycle. Tribes - Stress - Growth of Civilization - Collapse - Tribes- Etc. We are going along it pretty well. We're already entering Fascism.
The world, perhaps, but the West - not so much. A civilisation going towards the cliff edge, too distracted and absorbed by it's own neons to even notice it.
humans thought they were superior to dolphins for inventing the wheel, New York, and so many other things while dolphins spent their time enjoying themselves. The dolphins thought the opposite, for exactly the same reasons ...

I like how all the people mentioned in the song it’s not their real name or a reference to them! Hmmm, maybe a way of expressing the “fakeness” of the world? Who knows? AWESOME song!!!
Did you mean but* a reference to them not or* cause for most part except Ali yes, it's not their names but they are referring (reference) to who he's talking about, who they are
Capitalize Dolphins...I think he is referring to the undefeated championship team. As he refers to so many celebrities dying or forgot about. I completely agree this does not sound like APC...but is very addicting.
I doubt you still care, but the title is from the book A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, in which the dolphins desert earth moments before the world ends and their final signal to us is “so long, and thanks for all the fish.” They had known about the destruction of earth long before we did and had been trying to signal us for years now but we only misinterpreted them as complex flips and tricks for entertainment. It’s a very cool connection you made to the team though, pretty clever if you!
Awesome Song, as long as you're careful not to remember this one comes from the same person that depicted the end of the world in another song that makes this one pale in comparison.
never before has mankind had such easy access to all the information we currently have. you can learn anything you want, and at your own speed. yet, we use it for facebook, and pornhub.

Grayson Tartt in hitchhikers guide to the galaxy before the dolphins leave the Earth because it's about to be destroyed they leave this message - "so long, and tanks for all the fish". It's also the title of one of the books in the series.
From the film adaptation: "It's an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, Man had always assumed that he was the most intelligent species occupying the planet, instead of the *third* most intelligent. The second most intelligent creatures were of course dolphins who, curiously enough, had long known of the impending destruction of the planet earth. They had made many attempts to alert mankind to the danger, but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for titbits. So they eventually decided they would leave earth by their own means. The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double backward somersault through a hoop while whistling the star-spangled banner, but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish." Ever since Douglas Adams released Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy back in the 70s and 80s, the disappearance of dolphins has been used as a somewhat obscure pop-culture reference to signify some sort of imminent finality, usually the end of the world. Likewise, the phrase "So long and thanks for all the fish," is used as an obscure sort of final farewell between friends in the wake of unfortunate partings.

Maybe you will have better luck!! And never forget your towel!! Other than that, he is saying as a race we have wasted our time on all these superficial things, which will mean nothing in the eventual mutually assured destruction of all the countries on this planet. And he says hip hip hooray thanks for this fireworks display, like thanks for at least giving us something pretty to look at while you “melt our joyous hearts away under the mushroom cloud confetti”. Basically he’s saying we as humans are wasting our time on all these superficial things that add no real value to our lives, and when the “final curtain call” happens we won’t even realize and/or the few that do realize what’s happening will understand that they’ve wasted the little time we have on nothing. So live your life, do things you actually enjoy, spend time with those you care for. Because life is extremely short and it’s not so far fetched that one day, those is power will decide to destroy each other and in turn destroy the rest of us along with them. I’m a huge TOOL fan and I feel like APC is usually not this heavy( or well in your face about it like Tool is). But in my humble opinion this is a very in your face song lyrics wise about how Maynard feels the world is going and to be prepared, you don’t want to die feeling like all your time was wasted. That’s just my take on it anyway as a long time Tool and APC fan.
One of the most powerful lyric lines “ticker tape parade our hair and skin like Marilyn Monroe, in an afterwind”. That’s where we are as a species now.
I get that the world is jacked up, but ask yourself what you've done to tray and make it any better? I personally draw inspiration in the lyrics rather than apathy or acceptance.
I’m sorry, but APC has outdone even themselves, hands down. Just mind-blowing. Bravissimo.
Bravissimo! Hip Hip Hooray! What a radiant crescendo!
aha!
Bravissimo hip hip horray for this fireworks display
No apology necessary
I love how he uses the term "afterwind" which describes the wind drawn inwards towards the blast center of a nuclear explosion.
I had to explain that one to several people. Nukes are fascinating devices.
The only safe place in a nuclear war is ground zero.
Reminds me of the Rage against the machine lyric about the Priests of Hiroshima
Its a double meaning, actually. Marilyn Monroe in an afterwind also refers to the famous picture of her standing on a grate over a subway while the wind from the subway passing blows her skirt up. And the nuclear blast thingy too.

Barry Williams this is definitely my favorite song on the album besides Eat The Elephant.
Barry Williams Me too man!!! BEAUTIFUL...and true!
It's a satirized celebration of extinction. He had to make the tone happy. It also works well with the comedic reference to Douglas Adams.

Amazing song,amazing album,can't want for a New TOOL !
Keenan's lyrics just keep getting better. Imagine this level of genius with Tool behind him. Someone needs to put a boot in their asses.
