You should absolutely use your razors from your collection. You have the chance to shave with things that most of us will never even see in our lives.
Do it Matt! It’s great to see the vintage gear still alive and well.
And yes, yes, YES start shaving with your collection, we would all appreciate (or if not, at least I will!!!!). Thank you all you do to bring wet shaving to us all!
I have recent become very... as my wife would say "Obsessed" with vintage Gillette razors! Your videos and website have only made it easier to understand and know what I'm looking at!
Thanks for all that you do!
Yes, Matt. Please use the razors in your collection. I enjoy seeing how they actually compare to the crap on the shelves today.
Use the razors, Matt!!! We'd like to see shaves with these razors just to see how efficient these are / were and hear a bit of the history behind the technology of these vintage razors. Maybe it will get more people on board with DE shaving and let them see that even vintage tech can still beat modern cartridge razors! 😊
I know you hate or refuse to shave with some of your rare Gillette razors. I get why; i just love it when you do, because if you don't then the history is lost. It is up to you, no judgment. Good video!
Matt, keep breaking into your collection, that’s awesome to see your rare and vintage razors being used. Have a great weekend!
Put that in the win column for Schick injector razors. Great information, Matt.
I really like vintage razors and prefer them of a modern safety razors the historical style is so fantastic to get lost in
Let’s see the vintage collection shave series!!!
Just managed to get a Rex Konsul here in the UK after waiting for stock to arrive since March. Had my first shave with it a few days ago, and wow, impressive razor. Well done to all concerned in it's creation. I'm thoroughly going to enjoy using it alongside my Rex Ambassador.
For me, I always use my collection razors at least once when I purchase them. I like trying new things and the idea of them sitting untouched isn’t for me. Plus it helps to see if you find a new daily driver.
I used to use the DE89 and when I tried my ‘47 Aristocrat, I loved it so much that it became my new go-to razor.
You should definitely use your razors just so you can be part of that history. And you can remind us of a little bit of the history of the razor as well. And if there's also any new information that you've learned about your razors, you can share that updated history with us. And thank you for the Gillette archive series.
It would be nice if someone would do like you do and pick up on a little bit of History of some of Gillette's competitor razors at the time or those that came before and after Gillette. As always Matt, another great shave. Thanks for sharing. 🪒
YES…Matt start using the razors from your collection!!
Yes. More Vintage shaves! DE, and straight razors.
There are only four razors I really want, and this one is one of them!
Nice video and so cool to see you use this rare razor. And hell yes! Shave with your vintage razors in your collection. If you don’t it’s like keeping a vintage/rare race car in the garage and never using it for it’s true purpose! And yes with the Seinfeld reference!!
This is a great shave. I know, some vintage Gillette razors aro so rare that you prefer to let them in the closet, but, think about it, they are made to be used. I shave three times a week whit my vintage Gillette adjustable razors and every time I have a great feeling.
So, Rock on Matt! I'd like to see you using the 1949 Gillette Executive rhodium tto razor.
I would love to see this one as well!
Big Seinfeld Fan too! Can't make comedy like that today 😂
Given the similarity, I'd like to see Razor Emporium crack out a vintage Schick injector razor!
Thank you Matt! Really love vintage Gillettes and I'm learning more and more about them thanks to you. Just barely back classic (or is it traditional?) wet shaving and I'm already OWBMOG'ing (Obsessed with buying more old Gillettes) lol!
To be honest, I think TTO razors used together with the Gillette dispensers are safer and easier to use. But in the end, this is a great razor! Thank you for sharing, greetings from Italy! 😊
Great video Matt! For sure, you go right ahead and bust out the vintage collection, we’d all love to see those rare gems in action 😃👍🏼. It’s nice to see something different as I had no idea that razor even existed!
Bring out more of the big guns! These videos are great!
Matt, your commentary is so interesting and packed with knowledge. Plus, the production quality is perfect.
coming from you - thank you sir!
Hopefully the next video is with a vintage injector razor from the collection to follow up this one.
Nice vid Matt. How cool was using a piece of history and it actually turned out great. My vote - Use ‘‘em use ‘em all….. carefully. Love
The history and story behind them.
Use more from your collection? Sure, if it won't unduly wear or damage any lacquer coatings.
I began collecting a few years ago, and only wanted pristine examples. Unfortunately, the really good stuff was unduly expensive, so I redirected my razor focus.
Today, I've only acquired cheap, worn and corroded razors. After some cursory cleaning, if they shave well, I replate them to restore them to their former glory. They're now my 'new' razors that all shave as nicely as they look.
For a razor suggestion, I would love to see one I've wondered about for a while now, the old type pocket edition Gillette razors from I think around the 1920's or thereabouts.
Howdy Matt! Please shave with more of your vintage collection. 👊🏼🤠
The oldest and latest vintage Gillette you own would be a sweet video.
Vintage is fine, but there's no reason to buy anything new from Gillette after the toxic masculinity ad.
@@bustaruckus5611 oh I meant to say newest vintage Gillette.
I'd love to see more of the collection used.
I LOVE seeing these vintage shaves it is amazing to see how something that old is still very much useable
Use them Matt!! It'll be a great video archive of how good things used to be made. 50, 60, 70 or more years later and they are still working perfectly!
I just realized that never in my life have i shaved sitting down. lol
Not only use the fancy razors, but BUILD and SELL some of those designs! :)
Definitely break out some more classic Gillettes! How about the big fellow? I hear it is a bit more aggressive than most Gillettes.
ive been on the 36 hr rotation for shaving since u mentioned it in a previous video- going pretty well!
I have a pretty nice and semi-comprehensive vintage Gillette collection, also, and I make a point of using pieces from the collection. Not everything, mind, but it is really nice to use a Bostonian, pre-War Tech, Big Fellow, Khaki Set, or similar. I usually bring the case into the den with me so I can appreciate the full setup while shaving. Once it’s had a chance to dry off for 24 hours, it goes back into the display case with the rest of the collection. I think you should do it! Maybe not the well-patina’d double rings and such, but a new take on the Razor Archive series, in which you actually get a shave in with each, that’d be excellent. 👍🏻
great idea!
Great video! Definitely would like to see more vintage shaves! I recommend a WWI and WWII shave! For WWI maybe a bulldog officer kit? Extra points if it is done while camping with the included mirror! For WWII maybe do a shave with the contract tech? I have been interested in getting one for the history aspect, but wonder how well they shave with the plastic handle.
Opening Pandora's box? Well, the kicker is.....they are meant to be used! .......get them dirty 😂
Like to see some rare shaves as well ;) thanks for sharing this one!
Really good idea to use more of your collection razors, for sure!
You MUST use the razors in your collection to honor the heritage of the entire enterprise. These are tools, often beautiful, often brilliantly designed, always intended to give a wonderful shave. I know that you can appreciate how bulletproof most of the Gillette razors were (and are). I predict you will love using them and feel even more reverence for the company and its history. I loved watching how much you enjoyed using the rarest of all Gillette razors :)
I always enjoy seeing vintage razors in action. If they have an odd mechanism, even better. It helps me decide if I want to find and try certain razors that strike my fancy.
I couldn’t have clicked faster on a video! I can feel your anxiety building before using the razor Matt, I completely understand and can relate when you said your collection were like soldiers tucked away. I would never want to say what you should do, it’s your collection and it’s your decision at the end if you want to use them. I love your videos for whatever you showcase:)
I'd like to see you use one of the Techmatics that were made in the 60s and 70s and used by the Apollo crews to see how it works.
Video incoming!
Excellent Matt. You demonstrate that vintage razors still have life in them. They were made to last the blades were not. Planned obsolescence. Supply the public with what is needed now.
Love to hear about the history of the razors also.
Take care and be safe.
Great Idea would love to see a shave with the prototype serial # Toggle and chrome toggle.. Heck even a bottom dial!!!
keep using the cool old gillettes! love the vid and the energy lol
Yes this awesome Matt, please use more from your collection, if not every single one lol Think of how exciting the videos will be. Also for those who own the same razors you can give us your honest opinion
Definitely go into the collection! These were tools made to be used!
Yes! Break out the collection Matt!
Keep doing it and talking about how they work and why.
Use 'em, Matt. That is what they are for. Great shave.
Rock on, Matt! Then, when finished shredding some sick face melting guitar solos, you use those beautiful vintage razors!
Incredible razor. Keep using them. Any update on the RE pre shave you used last video
Coming soon!
What the? Fantastic vid once again guys!
I would like to see you use other "collectables".
I understand not wanting to use a vintage razor. I collect vintage safety razors. (I usually buy them on antique markets.). I clean them and put them away in my collection. Some (like the Gillette Bostonian) I tried once. But in general I don't shave with them. I want to keep the plating in perfect condition. Or when the plating has been worn out a bit, at least not wearing it down even more. Wanting to keep the original plating instead of getting it replated. For shaving I use the Rex ambassador. (Love that razor by the way.)
happy to hear ;)
Great shave Matt! That is a very cool razor.
I love the RE Barbershop scent shave soap!
I know you have feature quite a few of you collection in these videos what other razors do you have that you have’t featured yet?
In the archive series we have covered a lot of the major razor models but I have many variations of them or o ther non gillette items too :)
That's a nice looking razor. I think you are the best judge as to what can be used or not. For me personally I'm happy to just see the razors and learn about them without needing to see them in action. Though if I was in the market for a rare razor to use it might be helpful to know how it shaves first.
Man I hope to get my hands on a more unique vintage razor like this someday. Something special about keeping a piece of history like this in use. Also yes pull from the collection keep these shaves coming!
Congrads! You have been selected as the Comment winner. Please email me at Help@RazorEmporium.com with your T-Shirt size!
Great video. As a collector I always enjoy seeing pictures of rare Gillette razors, it’s even better to see them in action. Of course the Bottom Dial would be a great one to see in action, and as a fellow Seinfeld fan it would be funny to see you use it wearing a puffy shirt 🤣
I have, and have shaved with my rarer items like the Toggle and Double Ring, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Bottom Dial shave. Also, speaking of rare razors, I have a pigskin Pocket Edition and wouldn’t mind knowing where it sits on the 1-5 RE scale of rarity and possibly a ballpark value on it. Love the videos!
We have a razor archive video on the bottom dial :)
But are shaving with it in a puffy shirt?? Just kidding, I’ve seen that video but wouldn’t mind seeing it shave.
Also, if you ever wanted to add the pigskin Pocket Edition case to an archive video I’d be happy to send it to you on loan.
👍🏻Rock on Matt! Bring those arts of history out to show off…
These vintage razors have lasted this long, through how many countless shaves? Why would we think that the occasional gentle use nowadays would wear them out or damage them? If you have a razor that is in good repair, and you treat it with care, it will last you a lifetime, regardless of how old it is.
Many of mine are mint or never used 😬
@@RazorEmporium Wow! You are truly a connoisseur collector. I totally appreciate your passion. My question to you is “if you shave with a never before used razor, will it then show permanent signs of use”?
My daily shaver is a Muhle R89 Grande. I’ve used it regularly for the past six years, so it literally has hundreds and hundreds of shaves under its belt. If I put it back in its original packaging I would challenge anyone to think that razor was used. The plated finish on that razor is still flawless, and there is not a scratch on it anywhere. Of course it gets a gentle thorough cleaning after every use, and its never been dropped. Also, from day one I have used a nylon washer between the handle and base plate to prevent any marring of the contact surfaces. In summary, I treat it like the precision instrument it is. Your thoughts? FYI I truly enjoy your videos. If I ever get to your area I will definitely want to stop by your shop.
Yeah! More and more!
Rock on Mat!
Dude, you have to use them. A razor must be used to be appreciated. Cool video.
Use'm Matt!
I LOVE these videos 👍
Awesome Matt!🪒 Very unique razor, can see why it didn't make the "cut"👈 Yes, use those razors...can't harm them with an occasional use. The subsequent history and opinion of efficiency would be interesting no doubt. Thanks for a great shave and video. Enjoy!
Use them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The vintage ones are the best, don't deprive yourself from the full experience! 🙂
👍🏻 yes!!!! Idk how you have resisted for so long
I'm somewhat surprised that you haven't figured out how to load today's blades into the vintage injector. However, if you aren't going to use it, what's the point. Pretty cool to have that piece.
Rock on Matt! Lol use them its amazing to see these still in use , awesome videos
Try each razor and see which one is better or equal
I'm pretty sure I have one of those and one of the prototype injector magazines, but without the slider. Always wondered what it was. I've been at Gillette 23 years and a friend that retired 10 years ago who was there 35 years gave me one.
Need to go dig it out. When you unscrew the bottom knob does the head pop Off?
the top doest pop off - the bottom knob is spring loaded so it pops down. head pops up slightly as it's also spring loaded.
Use razors from the collection! I been dying to get a video with a battle of the long handles Rex Envoy XL vs Gillette New Deluxe Big Boy. I wanna hear your thoughts on em both. Cheers brother 🍻
great idea!
👍🏽 Rock on Matt!!! Now that your cherry is broken just remember each time you do it it will get easier
Yes use your razors 👍👍👍
Are the blades' slot pattern exactly the same as your modern blade? If not, maybe Gillette was trying proprietary blades with this system. If so... that could be why it was so difficult to remove. It wasn't made to "catch" a standard blade.
The modern blades are the Gillette cutout of 1931 forward. But modern blades still work in any Gillette ever made.
@@RazorEmporium I know that, but I thought they MIGHT'VE tried something different just for that rezor.
Have you tried the PAA Platinum Strangelet blades? What do you think of them? I have used a tuck of 5, and had 3 that was really smooth and sharp; and two that just felt tuggy and plucky. Those went straight in the blade bank after the first use. The other three held up really good.
Same experience
Rock on Matt! (As in, yeah use some of those old razors.) Also, maybe I'll get a t shirt. :D
Please use more razors from your stash!
I have a suspicion he’s been shaving with that since 1945… this is the just first time on camera
lol
Just goes to show how DE shaving can help you stay looking young! 😂
@@acfnugget7880 I’m hoping it was smoking cigarettes that aged the first generation of wet shavers
👍🏻rock on Matt
Use the vintage razors! 🙂
That is a very neat razor to own. I want one!
It seems like a lot of effort to swap out a blade.
I think the oldies have to be used at least once in a while yes?...it's what they were made to do!
Use the good stuff.
Also, have you ever tried a safety razor without the baseplate? It's supposed to mimic a straight razor shave.
You must have seen GeoFatboy's recent video, lol.
may have to try that ;)
Use them
MATT use the damn razors that's what they were made to do I have a modest collection and I've tried them all but admittedly not all shave well but the good one's get used regularly
Use them, or lose them.
DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT!
Use 'em!
Why did Matt not want to use the vintage blades? He said it'd be psychotic lol? Are they really harsh or just because they're old blades?🤔
Rarity.
👍Matt what are you going to do with those razor look at them.
Yup.
👍🏻Rock on Matt.
The razors were made to be used - so you might as well use them!
