I really like your experience, I am Chinese, and I am trying to read the first book of Harry Potter, I still love this series in spite of I am 34. This is my first English comment of my hole life. Maybe some words are wrong or some phrases are wring.
I've read Harry Potter books in Hebrew, English, Spanish, and French. It was interesting to see the difference (and of course, helpful to learn the languages). I was surprised by how the French version is different from the others.
HP (especially the first 3 volumes) is always among the first ones on the list when I start reading 'big time' in a foreign language. Currently I'm reading (and listening) the 3rd volume in Spanish. It's always a pleasure. Actually, HP has become my Christmas time reading. Every year I grab a volume either in my native tongue, Hungarian, or in one of my stronger foreign languages and I delve into the story during the Christmas holiday. I wish you a wonderful time with the Spanish translation! I'm looking forward to your videos about it. 😁
I love that you're reading it around Christmas time each year! My partner and I have a tradition of watching all of the movies starting at American Thanksgiving (late November) and ending on New Year's Eve. The movies/books really have a holiday/Christmas feeling to them, and they are very cozy and familiar.
Harry Potter is always my first choice when I start reading in a foreign language! It becomes a course book to me. I believe we basically share the same approach. Do you highlight the words and review them later? Interesting fact: I have never read Harry Potter in my native language... haha
This is amazing! Im just about to start reading HP in French so you are an inspiration! I'm going to use a kindle e-reader so that I can just press on unknown words to find out their meaning. Helpfully it also creates a list of words you looked up so you can review them.
I loved learning how long it too you to complete the series and each book for each language you read them in! I think this is such nice information to have, as it prepares me to not have expectations around how long they might take me to complete. I started reading book 1 in Spanish (native English speaker) last month. For a long time I'd been hearing advice from "average people" who say that Harry Potter is very difficult to read in a foreign language and they don't suggest it. After rewatching all the movies at the end of the year, I got a strong urge to re-read the books...but I'm so absorbed in my language learning practice that I felt I HAD to read it in my non-native language! I'm still on Chapter 1, but there is so much fantastic vocabulary! So many adjectives. The languages is so descriptive and colorful AND I get to relive this story yet another time. :-) I've been pulling this out for my fun reading, because my other reading in is Arabic, which I'm not as advanced with so the stories I'm reading in Arabic aren't half as interesting or colorful.

I’m learning Ukrainian and I have been reading them in Ukrainian. I’m midway through the second book now and it has taken me a long time to get through it. I hope you and your family are safe.

So I read the Harry Potter series in English for the first time just some time ago. I hadn't read it in my native language beforehand (also Russian). Wasn't a Potterhead myself (now I am), just watched two first movies when I was a kid. The whole reading situation with me having an advanced level and having been learning English for more than 13 years took me around 5 months. I was reading intensively throughout all the series, which left me with 13 study sets on Quizlet with all new vocab for me. Also, I've watched all the movies in English and listened to some of the HP audiobooks along the way. I feel that after all of this reading in English in general become much more of an exciting thing for me so it's definitely worth investing your time and energy in reading Harry Potter in English. It pays off! 😊

Harry Potter is definitely on my wish list of books. I even have not read them in my mother tongue (Dutch). I will read them in Spanish and Polish. At the moment I am reading “the little Prince” in Polish and Chinese. Also “el Alquimista” in Spanish. When I finish those, I will be ready for Harry Potter! И ГП очень удобная книга для этого, переведена на многие языки и уровень языка растет постепенно от 1 книги до последней. Хотя я начинала "читать" ГП с первых своих шагов в английском, но так и не прочитала пока его целиком, все впереди))) А вот китайцы расстроили, у них как и у нас много переводов, и найденные аудио версии не совпадают ни с моими бумажными версиями, ни со скачанными текстовыми. Но все равно мечтаю прочитать и их когда-нибудь))) Скажите, пожалуйста, вы как-нибудь прорабатывает новые слова для улучшения запоминания? Или они запоминаются просто за счёт повторяемости?
Добрый день! Прошу прощения за задержку с ответом. Обычно в процессе чтения я стараюсь выписывать самые интересные, необычные слова или словосочетания, которые чем-то привлекли мое внимание. Потом, после прочтения книги, я просматриваю свои записи, отбираю самые-самые понравившиеся слова/выражения и делюсь ими на страницах своего блога. Но, в целом, не могу сказать, что как-то специально учу все новые слова. Вы правы, скорее всего они сами запоминаются со временем за счет повторяемости. ❤

Do you write them down or just remember them right away, or do you just translate them once and then look them up again when you forget the meaning? 3) Do you also learn from any textbooks, e.g. grammar, as a supplement to reading books? 4) So after reading books and watching movies etc., are you able to write a script independently, even if it requires active use of words, not just passive? 5) I would like to learn Russian, I am a complete beginner. Do you think I can start reading Harry Potter even with zero knowledge? I've read it in Czech, German and English. 6) How do you go about watching movies in a foreign language? Are you looking up every unknown word again?

That’s awesome. I think you should invest some time into training your English accent because your Russian accent is a little strong. It’s incredible that you know so many words though
@@SilentPolyglot No problem! And if you don’t know the IPA (international phonetic alphabet) I would recommend learning to read it so you can read exactly how each word is pronounced in the dictionary and not just the spelling. It’s a game changer!
