Animal enrichment is something that we as keepers should be practicing regularly, no matter what species it is we’re dealing with. Tortoises are no exception to this rule and they benefit greatly when we make things interesting for them. Simple ideas like hiding food, simulating rain or changing up the habitat a bit go a long way and they improve the quality of the animals’ lives. It’s up to us to take the very best care we can of our tortoises and this can be fun for both keeper and tort. Be creative, think about how in nature the tortoises have to find everything they need on their own and remember: just because history has taught us that tortoises are slow, uninterested creatures, that does not mean it’s true to any extent and enrichment is crucial for them to be happy while living the amazingly long lifespans they’re supposed to achieve. Whether you’re keeping sulcata, red foot, Hermann’s, Egyptian, Texas, leopard, Greek, Russian, Galapagos, Aldabra, elongated, Marginated, radiated, desert tortoises or some other species, they should all be able to live interesting lives even under managed care. This video will show you some tips and tricks regarding how we enrich the lives of our tortoises here at Garden State Tortoise!

Hey friends! Thanks for watching and for the support as always. Don’t forget, we post NEW VIDEOS on WEDNESDAYS and SUNDAYS! If you missed our last video on tortoises stuck in the cold, watch it at this link: ruclips.net/video/hxyRrNvkbsI/видео.html
Lots of love,
Chris ❤️🐢🐍🦎🐐
My 3 year old Eastern Hermann’s gets some extra ‘enrichment’ when he’s having a soak - I put your videos on my iPad near his little tub & we watch you together 😂 It really looks likes he’s paying attention, he just sits there chilling & watching the screen! Thanks for another excellent video - I get all my tortoise info from you 👍
Hahah that’s awesome Cheryl!
Lol. Yes, I sometimes lie on my bed and have my phone where my little Russian tortie is tucked in her little bed and can see it. She does watch it and will sometimes seem interested with what's being showed.
Sorry, I also planted clover and other wild flowers and they did lay eggs in there so I feel like I’m giving them a pretty naturalistic home
Nice work Dan!
I have an Eastern Box turtle and due to the small size of my apartment can't give him a big wonderful enclosure. However, I've always noticed how he explores the worktable I put him on when I feed him. So for his enrichment I give him time to explore my crafting supplies (yes making sure it's safe) or put him on my bed where he gets great fun out of exploring the bedding - digging under it! And when I feed him I also give food to him at various levels because he seems to like the feeling of stretching his neck to take a bite! So this video was so right on about turtles needing enrichment. Oh, I can't give him a plant but occasionally I but safe items in his box for him to look at, sniff at and nudge.
Very cool Lee! Thanks for sharing that.
Highly informative!! Amazing channel🤗
Also waiting for Otis to show up again :)
Thank you! We’ve got a big video on him coming soon.
I look forward to these videos every Sunday 🐢 Thanks, Garden State Tortoise!
Thank you Gaia
I use a dog toy called a JW Hol-ee roller that I stuff with food. It rolls away as my tortoise feeds, so he has to be a bit more active and chase down his salad.
Awesome!
I just love watching your videos, they are both entertaining and educative. All of it feels wholesome and family friendly and it really lifts my mood
Thank you so so much 🙏🏻
I inherited 2 Russian box turtles and a solcata ..dont think I spelled that right....they are all fairly large and I have learned ALOT from your videos. Currently I'm in Kansas where they have been inside but soon heading back to Arizona where they will be outside again. Just wanted to say THANKS for all your help in caring for these true wonders of nature!
Another fantastic teaching video! Very interesting how Iris noticed the new plant immediately. Really enjoyed it. Take care and keep the videos coming please.
Thanks Mary, every Wednesday and Sunday we’ll be posting!
What a wonderful helper!💖❤️
What great information. I do not have turtles, but I look to watch them.
You and your family are amazing in the care of these babies.
Thank you Cindy 🙏🏻
My Hermann’s absolutely loves his rain showers and finding new plants or his mazuri treats. He also loves kicking about his table tennis balls and being a complete lemming climbing over everything or knocking things out of his way. It really brings out their personalities as well as keeping them active and healthy 🤗🐢🤗
That was fun and informative I enjoyed watching it thank you for making these videos 🐢
Thank you for watching them!
Great video dude! I started putting hanging plants in my greenhouse for my Red Foot so they have to reach up for different plants. A Boston fern and two others. I know they could have but at the moment I can’t think of the name of them.
Thanks awesome!
Nice shirt, Chris.
👍🏻
Very informative, I could watch your channel all day long 😊
Thank you so much!
Sunday, my fav day of the week because of your videos! 💕
I have a room dedicated to my pets, including my Russian tortoise. I sit with her for an hour or two everyday on the floor and let her explore the room. I put little hideouts for her all over. I also bought this cute small animal collapsible tunnel for her. She loves it, and will explore that too. She also loves her pets. The other night she sat for 20 mins while I rubbed her shell and her legs. 😛
You gave me some more great ideas with this video too! I currently have play sand out for my hermit crab tank, so I put some in a shallow dish and my tortoise has already crawled all through it. I'm going to add it to her enclosure. I love the "rain" idea too. I have a bottle that sprays a fine mist, and will start using that on her in her enclosure. 🌧️
I've been saving up money for the past year, and am going to build her an outdoor enclosure for this spring/summer. I will have to check out your other videos so I can figure out how to get started.👷♀️
Thank you for all you do for our not so furry friends!❤
That’s all so awesome!!!! So happy you look forward to Sunday’s and don’t forget, we post Wednesday videos now as well!
@@GardenStateTortoise That's awesome! I just watched the video that came out Wed, but didn't realize you do that regularly. At least I'll have something to look forward to in the middle of the week now! 🐢🌈
Great video! These tips always help me to take better care of my Hermann's tortoise! :D
Thanks for watching it!
I love your videos with family so cute and great information too 🐢🐢💕 Thank you 😊
I have a Greek spur thigh that was abandoned and I rescued she's pretty large and I thought I took care of her well but you sir are just above and beyond I love your videos sooo much thank you for all the helpful tips and advice ❤
This was really interesting and absolutely adorable! Watching them eat is the cutest thing 😍
Thanks Jen!!
I have a disabled russian named herman. He has lego wheels, so i can not put any substrate in his enclosure. But i do put plants he can eat and plastic light weight balls he can move around in all his huts he has. He loves that!
That’s so awesome!!
Awesome video! Thank you for the education on keeping your tortoises enriched and healthy, as I am getting my first Tortoise this weekend and am beyond excited. My first real pet as an adult and I want to give it the most incredible life possible!
I’ll never stop loving watching pancake tortoises walk around and move. Theyre so silly looking! It’s like watching a couple of dinner plates get up and walk around LMAO.
I so appreciate all you guys do for the turtles and tortoises along with all the other animals that you take care of. Appreciate everything you do. Can help you out as much as I can by watching your videos and sharing your videos where I can 🦋
Thanks for another fun video, Chris and Casey! We find hand feeding is excellent for enrichment and interaction.
For sure! Thanks for watching!
This channel is incredible! ❤️❤️❤️
I love animals, thank you for posting this! 🥺💙
So informative! Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Can you share who prints your backgrounds? Maybe in next newsletter share what background with what tortoise so we too can make ours look amazing.
They’re custom backgrounds made by @toadranch cages. But, you can take your own photos or download your own image and have it printed onto a corrugated plastic backdrop at smartpress.com
This was a fun video!!!!!!
Love your videos !!!
Thank you!
You take amazing care of them. I had 2 Eastern Long-necks as a kid. I just took my bird to the exotic vet that treated my tortoise's ear infection 35y ago! Thanks for sharing your critters with us❤
I play my turtles music like you have in this video.. it's very enriching!
Will have to look into this for ojr rescue sulcata Shelby and maybe Billy the Russian Tortoise...
👍🏻👍🏻🐢🐢
Great video Leone Family!
Thanks Tom!
Love your channel! I live in Florida and have seen a turtle coming out of our woods occasionally.. according to a friend, the little guy is 30 to 40 years old. Thank you for the wonderful content in your videos, and, of course, love to Otis❤️
This channel deserves more subscribers
I watch you while I "feed" Charlie. I've been putting giant leaves in the gate holes to simulate "bushes" or trees 😊
That’s so great! Thank you!
Love your long videos. Your animals are awesome, you keep them responsibly and you actually EDUCATE!!! Thanks guys!!!
Thank you Jack!
Thanks!
You are amazing.
LOVE the shirt!!! Go Brian!!!
❤️💪🏻💪🏻
I just found a tortoise on the side of the road and decided to adopt her. Your tricks really helped me. Thanks you!
This is an appropriate amount of excitement for a YT video. Also TURTLES!
the part where you simulate rain is really interesting! i don't have pet tortoise but all of this information is just really cool to learn 🐢
Well, thanks for watching it! 🙏🏻
I spray down my tort and his enclosure each night. I just use a spray bottle- nothing fancy. But it keeps things moist and helps him stay hydrated
Love the goofy chamileon eyes.
It's fun to what you feed the tortoises.
This is a great learning & entertaining video.
Thanks Debbe! Had to throw that chameleon clip in there 😊
Your daughter is very intelligent and a fast learner.she looks as she is having fun also.
Thank you!
Love the education aspect of your VERY entertaining videos. Wish there had been someone like you to learn from when I had my Eastern box turtle.
Thank you thank you thank you!!
They're too cute. Also, nice shirt! 💚
Thank you! 💪🏻
Very interesting.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Another AWSOME video ! My Box turtle 🐢 DIG Dug has 2 inclosers 1 inside / 1 outside He loves being in outside habitat when weather permits. Built it my self with glass top coffee table, pallets put it on casser wheels including life plants and pond 😃
Thank you for this presentation, It was very interesting and provides ideas to keeping other animals.
Thank you!
I absolutely love Sunday mornings to see the new videos. ❤
Thanks Robin!!! Also, we are now posting Wednesday videos too!
@@GardenStateTortoise that’s great!! I have a yellow bellied slider named Max. He’s almost a year old. I just love him. I love your videos and all that you and your family, do.
Love your videos. I'm glad you encourage us to watch them. I might have overlooked them otherwise. One has to beat YT at their own game.
So true. Thank you for watching. It’s such a shame that we can’t rely on RUclips to help push such educational topics.
Beautiful tortoises and a great batch of hints - your little apprentice is just too cute! #BrianStrong
Thank you! #brianstrong
❤THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR THE TURTLES..VERY EDUCATED BRIAN ON THIS TOPIC !!!
Thank you!!!
Learn something new in every one of these recent videos. Your extra effort is noticed 👍
Thanks Mike! We try 💪🏻
Our hermann tortoise loves exploring. We set up things in the hall way for him to check out each morning. He “runs” up and down the hall way over and over going thru boxes or whatever else we put out there that day. We hide things in the boxes like food or cuttle bone and have large holes cut in them so he can go in and out. We’ve only had him 5 days but he seems to know the routine already because he comes right up to us now in the mornings. He knows it’s time to play.
Love it. We got a Russian tortoise for Christmas. We found the lettuce he likes and a couple of treats (carrots especially). Right now, he has a very simple cage. I want to make it more interesting. Any advice or pointers?
Thank you. We’ve got a lot of ideas in our enclosure builds playlist. You can find a lot of ideas from that and also our pen building videos.
Congrats on your baby! I have a Russie too, and I adore her!!!
Be careful to get yours plenty of fiber (I have to moisten and cut up Timothy hay and wrap it in spring mix lettuces and hand feed) too! And keep fruits and veggies to a minimum and avoid things like spinach and broccoli but as a rare and minimal treat as they can cause kidney stones!
P.S. for the hay, I use Oxbow, giving her only the softer, grassy pieces and avoid the stiff, more straw-like pieces.
@@saga2964 Yup, that's right. Carrots, regular lettuce, and other vegetables are not appropriate for Russian tortoises. They feed mainly on grasses and meadow green plants. They are not naturally capable of digesting sugars.
We have a Russian and love him! Don’t give him carrot too often (I only give a little a few times a year) as the sugars are hard for them to digest. Safe greens (lettuces, endive, radicchio) and especially now that’s it’s spring, lots of dandelions, clover, wild plantain and violets from our lawn are what he chows down on- he loves it when his “summer diet” arrives, lol
The amount of work involved is mind boggling to me!!
It never ends!
I hope I can have a zoo of turtles like you one day
I just realized your names are EXTREMELY similar to mine and my sister's names!
Awesome video! Any chance we can get a video of all your basic winter setups? Just looking for ideas on better ways to keep my tortoises that don’t hibernate through the winter. Thanks for all the information!
Thank you! You’re pretty much looking at them in this video and we’ve shown them in other recent videos as well but at some point we can highlight all of them.
Best Shirt Ever!! Also, I hand feed Panzie our russian all the time :) She loves it. She also follows my crocs for walks outside in the neighborhood!. She LOVES her hybiscus! And her succulents! I even ordered 3 huge nopales pads to grow her own cactus here in Ohio!
Thanks Gerri and that’s awesome! #brianstrong
Great video, as always! Thanks for letting us know that it is safe to buy plants from Lowe's etc. and just rinse them off and use for your tortoise. I thought only organic was safe, and that is very hard to find.
Your daughter reminds me of myself at her age, at her daddy's side learning to care for nature's critters!
Thank you for watching this!!!
I’ve been led to believe that only organic plants were ok and that if I didn’t buy an organic I needed to let it “breathe” for 6 months to get rid of pesticides! I can’t find organic plants approved for them and if I buy a non organic and have to wait 6 months that’s a long time. Glad to know I can buy a non organic and rinse it.
You can reproduce Tree Jade by using just one leaf or small branch. That way you have a free, organic plant source. It's very fulfilling and they are super easy to grow, and extremely hardy plants.
@@amypetersen1668 there will be some chemicals secreted in the plants, but much of the real nasties are on the surface. See above comment re growing your own ❤
The happiest tortoises in the world! You can see it in their eyes :)
🙌🐢
can you do a video similar about Diamondbacks terrapins? I have one. had many. it's a boy, i never thought boy diamondbacks would be the ones staying small. you guys are the best! I'm located in Wildwood!
Hey Chris, I actually got my greek from you! Quick question - what was the plant to the right of the jade plant in the Egyptian enclosure? Thanks!
Awesome! Hope it’s doing well. That’s a fake plant from Hobby Lobby, I forget what it’s called.
@@GardenStateTortoise he is doing great, thanks for the reply!
I have a question. I love the idea about adding the live plants that are safe from them. You said just rinse them well, we don't have to wait 6 months or so after repotting? Just asking because this is what was told to me somewhere else and that was almost impossible for me since I cannot keep plants alive. If we don't have to wait so long this just opened up a new world for me!!! Love all of your videos. I am learning so many new things about raising healthy turtles/tortoises. Thanks for all you do.
I would love to see a Central American/Ornate Wood Turtle Care guide from you!! I love how you teach in this video and it would be cool to see a care guide for a species that doesn't really have intuitive ones.
Great idea and thank you!
@@GardenStateTortoise Can’t wait! 🥰💚🐢
Thanks for all of the info. I've learned so much from your channel. I don't have any animals except a stray dog, but I love learning about all of God's creatures. 👍💕
Thank you for watching!
You might want to contact the growers of plants you buy in retail stores like Lowe's. Sometimes they use systemic insecticides. It can take 6 to 8 weeks for that type of chemical to clear the plant tissue. I would ask the grower
(the tag is hopefully on or in the pot)! If you buy from an actual nursery, they should know the history of the plant material.
the leaf is bigger than him!!🤣🤣🤣(7:05)
those turtles loved that Cuttlebone, looked tasty for some reason
Are you craving salt?
Commenting for the algorithm
I have cuttle bone and greens hanging from clips in the enclosure ❤ watching my Horsefield eat reminds me of the goat scene from Jurassic park.
Yes!! 🙌
Hey there! Came across this video and wonderful insightful information! Where do you typically order their food from? I'm trying to find fresh hibiscus, dandelion, clover, etc. I've been using a small planter setup to grow grass in but being able to order would help 1000x more for me in terms of my Sulcata's weed and flower enrichment.
Nice.. my diamond back terrapin only wants seafood 🤷♀️…
Luckily that’s the best thing you can give diamondbacks!
I thought of this channel earlier when I saw the news that a 90 year old endangered radiated tortoise named Mr. Pickles fathered 3 babies in a Houston zoo. They hatched and are named Dill, Gherkin and Jalapeño.
So cool! Thanks for watching!
Hi. I have a horsefield. What cactus or plants can I keep that she can eat or won’t harm her. Thanks.
How often do you give cuttlebone and what age do you start given it?
I know you also care for aquatic and land turtles. Do you think you could make a video on feeding enrichment for them? I have two yellow-bellied sliders, and I feel like there's more I should be doing to give them their best lives
Where is that water dish in the beginning of the video from?
Off topic, but can you go over the north aner😢tortoises? Example habitats, protection, diets, habits, and why they aren’t in the pet trade. Seeing Iris was a bit of a shock to be honest.
🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
what is the ambient temperature in the room??? Greetings from Holland.
Hi! Great video! We can already tick off your enrichment technques :) as we use all of them, but we are not able to plant anything so that it survives for longer than a day :P What live plant would you suggest for a Russian tortoise? Aloe and other succulents go bye bye in a second :P
Btw, we once put a new branch in the enclosure and our Ori (after waking up) was like: Hey, it wasn't here! and he tried to get rid off it, by pushing it to the wall and trying to lift it out and outside xD
Great work Lana! Dracanea is a great plant that should survive no problem in there at least for several months.
Can all these tips work for other kinds of tortoises like Russian tortoises?
Hello Gentlemen,
I am having baby star tortoise .
Could you please help what should I give to eat.
Egyptian tortoise 🐢 😀
😊🐢
Can you do a care video on indian stars? Maybe covering them from hatchlings to adults? There's not much around on the internet about it, which is surprising in 2023.
I took 4 red building bricks with holes in them, stood them vertically and cemented together leaving a hole at the top in the middle of the bricks, filled the holes and the middle with soil and planted in the holes and in the middle of the bricks with weeds that are leaf heavy
Thank you for the video, I got some really nice ideas that I'll try to include for my tortoise😊
I usually take him from his enclosure for the length of the day to roam the room freely, providing hiding/sleeping places, food, water, sunlight in the hours when it's shining through the window.
I'd like to ask though, how to feed them the cuttlefish bone for example, because he's a very picky eater😅
Nice work Alex! Just keep offering the cuttle bone and eventually he will start eating at it.
Mine (a Russian) refuses to eat cuttlebone. I leave it in his enclosure but he just refuses. So I do sprinkle calcium powder a couple times a week on his greens . Some just don’t like cuttlebone but it should always be offered. My guy just turned 2 and I keep hoping one day he’ll start munching on it so I can stop with the powder, but for now we want to keep him healthy so we do the powder
My son wants a tortoise how do i take care of it
Can you do a survey of which species thrive in groups and which prefer to be housed alone? 🤔🤔🤔
I am going to grow cress for my hermans tortoise and plant it in his enclosure.
I also put some of his food on his rocks and in a ball that rolls away as he is taking bites from it.
He was a rescue, and I really struggle to get him to eat cuttle fish or calcuim powder, so I'm not sure how to help any advice is appreciated. 😁
Great work Brooke! Just keep offering the cuttlebone, they all eventually start to nibble at it.
I love tortoise state garden and there so helpful they tell you in detail how to look after ur pet tortoises I’ve found them so helpful thankyou xx🌺🐢🥬❤️
Do you have any ideas for my giant African tortoise he lives out in the backyard and he just walks around for new spots to lay but I want him to have fun fyi he’s 95 lbs and 18 years old
Currently growing some flowers indoors, for my 2 year old Russian. Very rarely I'll see him go for the bone although he does get calcium when needed.
That’s great Jack!
