One of the best coming of age films that never really got the recognition it truly deserves. Amazing soundtrack, the best song being "Only The Young" by Journey. This opening scene gives me chills. They just don't make films like this, with such an impact as "Vision Quest" anymore. The passion and message behind this film is beyond what many can comprehend.

I was a wrestler in high school when this came out. The soundtrack tape was always in my Sony Walkman before a match. One of my greatest accomplishments was making weight my senior year. I cut 22.5 lbs to wrestle at 105. Toughest thing to do and still wrestle. Nobody questioned whether it was safe or not back then. I always felt they underplayed how difficult that part of it was and I would have loved to have seen something other than a hip toss but still loved this movie. It makes we want to do it all over again. God bless the 80s. So lucky to have been there.

I was in the 8th grade on the Navajo Rez when this movie came out. I don't think I saw until VHS a year later. Frank (Shute) and I met a couple years ago and I'm proud to call him my friend. Not because of this movie, he's good hearted man and we have great conversations. He's come out to the rez a couple times and I once blew him out of the water to some unsuspecting fellow Navajos. I told him, "Frank I gotta do this at least once". Their look was priceless when I revealed to them who they were talking with about their puppies for the last several minutes. BTW- I am now a high school WRestling coach and I'm sure if I showed up for practice dressed like Louden's coach, my kids would have a good hard laugh. You know what? I'll try it at least once.

This is why martial arts is a great alternative, if not, more supreme than self-help: one is forced to 'get over themselves' and make peace with themselves, with others, with their world around them, and this is achieved through a journey of self-mastery requiring discipline and conquering (or transmuting) person demons.
This isn't simply a cheap film about some ambitious, horny young dude who just want his ego raised (although, the first half of the film is all about him taming his ego to a good portion). This is a story of self-discovery, and what better means than a dangerous challenge to take on this monstorous, psychopathic Shute as such. Love the story, and love the supporting characters also. Elmo is such an authentic soul. The scene where Kooch is getting abused by his dad reveals the 'humaness' and reality this film depicts. It's no Hollywood bullshit- they actually put some effort into this film. The head coach is such a caring guy, like Louden's genuine father. The English teacher Tanner is like a friend and possible male-mother towards Louden. Even his love interest, his initiation into intimacy, cares about Louden a lot and has a genuine motherly style appreciation towards Louden and respects him so much (even though he was never able to acknowledge this).
It's low thinking to assume you have to be the best to feel some significance in the world. When life or your Inner Calling grants you a nudge, "Maybe I should fight Shute?".....Act on it regardless of consequence. Religious preach over. Beautiful film. UNBELIEVABLY UNDER-RATED. Much appreciation

The coach talked her into wrestling a few matches. She pulled a Louden and dropped down a weight class. Of course I had to pull this movie out! She has since graduated but inspired a girls wrestling team and may possibly be an assistant coach. What makes this one of the best movie beginnings is that it starts out with a blackscreen. The only sensation is the sound of the jump rope. The first time you see the movie, you aren't sure what the jump rope sound actually is. Then, the opening strains to "Lunatic Fringe" fade in.
Then it dawns on you. You recognize the sound from your own jump rope sessions. Then the video fades in revealing Louden working out alone.
You need to add back in the opening 5 seconds of the flick.

That's super cool! I wrestled in High School and watched this movie at least 100 times in those days. I also dropped two weight classes to get my shot at who at the the time was the best. Long story short is I dropped the weight but ended up trashing my shoulder in the quarter finals and never go my shot at the champ. What I would do for a an autographed pic with "You think you could make the weight?"

I dont care man but this scene and song used to get my ego pumped up in the pre season of wrestling. Too bad I didnt use it to place in state but hey it was better wrestling at national tournements because there wasnt so much pressure on my back during state.

I fucking miss wrestling, I just had to go and drink on a weekend and get caught with the smell on me the next morning at a jv tournament that I just had to help out at my senior year. It's still within me though, That's what wrestling is all about.

I live in Spokane Valley , right next Spokane (shocking I know) and watching the film and knowing the locations is awesome! Though Spokane and the surrounding areas has changed a little, most of the major landmarks and some of the restaurants are still there! Plus killer soundtrack, and such an underrated film, hopefully it gets more recognition soon!
