    in her prime Venus' game was incredible! A huge serve, proper powerful groundstrokes that hit deep into the court, combined with that incredible movement and speed. I really do love the contribution Venus has had in tennis history, proper inspiring player with all her health setbacks.

      As good as she was. I dont really miss the old Venus. Her game today is just much more solid and much more trickier. The only problem she has these days is her serve arent working as well as it used to and she looks fatigue basically all the time.

      @bigray1999 You really put Osaka and Keys in comparaison with a prime Venus? none of them would take more than 4 games in a set against a prime Venus on any surface...Venus is 35+ yo she cant be as powerful or quick like she was at 22 thats all

    I remember everyone saying Venus and Serena were ‘all power’ when they came out and true, there’s no question they brought the most power we’ve seen - but anyone can see what a good court feel Venus has here. Hingis is the Queen of using every inch of the court to her advantage and Venus is replying in her own way, drop shots, everything.

    • @mandandi

      True man. Martina was considered a better clay court player than Venus, but this matchup clearly shows how well Venus could play on clay. Her strokes, court coverage, use of power and shot selection is clear in this match.

    10:07 Tell me what other player can play a point like that? Venus was scary in her hay day, man. When she's moving well, crushing the backhand, and approaching the net consistently - there's no one that can stay with her. Even Serena would tell you that.

    This version of Venus is so world class that in my opinion no one could beat her including Serena, Graf, and Navratilova. The soft hands, killer serve, incredible placement of shot selection, getting so low for her shots, and wall like defense is truly something to behold. There is not one player on the tour in 2019 that plays at this level. And no one has Venus' movement and speed. Amazing!

  • @RoughRider757
    @RoughRider757 5 лет назад +14

    Venus made this court play like a Hard court because of her world class movement. This is the attribute of speed and then movement but it's rare to have both at a world class level.That's how in the zone her game was and to move like this on clay is unheard of. Maybe Graf had this level of movement on clay on her best days. No one else was this quick on clay while being so balanced. You expect to see this type of balance only on a hard court but not on clay and especially red clay which is heavier and slows you down.

    • @aaronwilkins1843
      @aaronwilkins1843 5 лет назад +1

      @@dissonantvibe8585 Age has nothing to do with being in one's 'prime'. By 1997, Hingis was already a Grand slam champion and 1997 was her absolute best year- 3 titles and FO finalist to boot. 1999 was her third best year at the slams and also overall win percentage (85%). Venus meanwhile would not reach a slam final between losing to her at the USO 1997 and 2000 when she began to move into her prime, and 1999 was in terms of her overall year's win %, her 6th best year (82%). They played eachother more times in 1999 than any other splitting the difference at 3 wins a piece. As established, in terms of form, Hingis was close to her best here while Venus still had significant mileage. In 2000-2002 (despite Hingis shortly occupying the No.1 position in early 2000 and again in early 2001 and having her second best season (9 titles and 89% win rate), Venus dominated winning 5 of 6 matches. This was even before what was in terms of titles won (7) and finals (and perhaps even quality) her very best year of 2002. Prior to this, the h2h was 7-2 in Venus' favour. To summarise, its reasonable to state that the era in which these two were playing the closest to their absolute best simultaneously was 2000-2002, which Venus dominated. Prior to this when Hingis was in her prime and venus not, she owned the rivalry whereas the two matches they shared in 2006 during which both were not playing great (although Venus was having one of her worst ever seasons in particular) they shared the spoils 1-1. Therefore Venus at her best > Hingis at hers (although both legendary players, amongst the best ever)

    • @dissonantvibe8585
      @dissonantvibe8585 5 лет назад +1

      @@aaronwilkins1843 , you've demonstrated why statistics are called damn lies. You've selectively chosen the period from the 99 Grandslam Cup to the 2006 Warsaw Cup which most favor Williams, but it's exactly that...cherry picking.
      The Williams sisters were competitive basically from the moment they joined the WTA so this narrative that their losses at the beginning of their career don't count is dubious at best. Venus Williams was in the US Open final in 1997 (where she was admittedly overwhelmed by the occasion in the first set), but none of her fans want to count this year.
      Let me play the same game. Everyone knows that Hingis was a shell of her self after her 2001 Australian Open loss to Capriati so let me not count her 2 losses to Venus from that time to her first retirement. Meanwhile, I'll grant you the 97 losses to Hingis don't count for Venus. That still leaves their record 8-8. 9-8 for Hingis if I count their 1997 US Open match
      I agree with you that they both will deserve their place in the Hall of Fame, but this ridiculous narrative which was helped spread by the biased American media that Hingis was overshadowed once the new wave of power took hold is tiresome and wrong

    Venus in her prime had incredible athleticism, movement, DTL shots (that really created most of the openings for her) and even more touch. After 2003, she was still a good athlete but she lost a step and her backhand DTL slowly disappeared. Interestingly in the late 2000s and 2010s, I feel she developed a much better forehand. She had a great one DTL in the late 2000s and she developed the inside out later in the 2013-2017 phase of her game.

    Unfortunately Hingis 'problems were that her weapons or weakness fell into her opponents weapons. Vs Graf her down the line was eerily pulverized by the fraulein missile, vs Davenport and Venus she faced the onslaught of heavier and better height angled backhand shots, and her forehand became heavily exposed to their far superior backhands to the Hingis mostly defensive forehand. Capriatis's forehand neutralized or superseded her backhand and completely cannibalized her timid forehand and so goes the history..
