    Not a SINGLE dislike, wow! I’m so happy I found your channel and I’ve made a point to download all of your videos. I’ve been investing for a few years and have actually grown my portfolio to 6 figures last year. That being said, I still love the really simple videos teaching the basics. Keep it up man, I really loved your 5 min history lesson videos on 2008 and the Great Depression! More in-depth videos on those two, would be awesome in the future haha

    I just wanted to say keep up the great work man. I’m 16 and always had a passion for money and numbers and I love the way your videos explain investing barcodes in a concise and clear manner to really continue to spark my interest and thirst to learn more. I’ve actually done a couple of seasons on the stock market game in my high school business class which I’ve learned some cool lessons and am actually planning to obtain a degree in finance once I graduate this coming year. I’m just getting my feet wet in investing in penny stocks and your videos have taught me a lot of good stuff but is there anything further you could give any advice for just beginning in penny stocks and starting off really young w low amounts of capital?

    • @ThePlainBagel
      @ThePlainBagel  5 лет назад +15

      Almighty X thank you for the very kind words! Truthfully I never did much work with penny stocks; the way I was taught was to always stick with safer, less volatile picks. That being said, I know there are many in the field who live for penny stock trades.
      My biggest piece of advice would be to focus on developing your discipline and tenacity; read about behavioural finance and how to avoid taking mental short cuts. Understanding your own limitations early on will put you well ahead of the pack.
      That being said, it sounds like you’re already well on track to developing experience in the field! Glad to meet another finance enthusiast, and I wish you all the best with your studies. :)

    I have enjoyed all of your videos so far! This is certainly one of the best Canadian channel for beginners.
    Lately, I have developed some interest to learn about investing. ( as Engineer I dont have prior knowledge or interest about learning how money works :D)
    Can you recommend some books (or course) where i can learn l'il more than basics of investing including, stocks, options, commodities, real estate etc?
    I have been reading a lot in last few months on internet and some books. But either most are too basic or has economic jargons that are just too complex for me to understand. Thanks! And keep up the great work!

    Does stock picking make any sense? Can anyone expect to earn better than market returns in the long run? Is it ever worth the risk to try to beat the market? Should everyone just put their money in a passive ETF because that gives the best risk adjusted return in the long run? What will happen to the market if everyone did that? Will the market stop functioning because people no longer buy individual stocks?
    I hope you cover these questions in a future video

    Question: If you want to buy an Index Fund or Index ETF and it doesn’t mention the code (DIS or INC ... or ACC) how do I figure out if a fund or ETF will give the money from cupons or dividends to the fund holders ? Is there a search criteria, statistic or another pile of words(in the name) that shows you if the fund or ETF will give the money from interest and/or dividends to it’s holders ?

      You can usually find that out in a fund's "Fund Fact" sheet. Do a search for "distributions" and it will indicate how regularly the fund pays out. Hope this helps!

    Mutual funds are a lot less accessible. ETFs are much easier to understand what index they're based on, their holdings, and their historical returns. I don't own a single mutual fund because they're just so confusing. Am I missing out?

    How do you know if a fund is passive or actively managed? For example, is the Vanguard S&P 500 an active or passive fund?

    • @ThePlainBagel
      @ThePlainBagel  5 лет назад

      Most passive funds are index funds; I don’t believe index funds will ever be active, so if they have an index in the name they are probably passive. Outside of that most funds are active

    Hey plain bagel, I was wondering if I could get some of your advice. My parents asked if I wanted to put my money in a mutual fund and they told me what it was and brought me to their adviser and I said yes because it seemed like free money or at least to keep up with inflation. I told one of my teachers who is big into investing about what I was doing with my money and he told me about ETF's. So for about the past two weeks I have been trying to learn as much as possible about investing. So now I just have a few questions. 1.The mutual fund I am in right now has averaged 11% since 1994 with an MER of 2.25%, and I found and ETF with Vanguard that has averaged 18% since 2014 with an MER of 0.08% and it indexes the S&P 500. I doubt it will hold that 18% average but has a fraction of the fee's compared to the mutual fund, Would it be better to switch? 2. I am wanting to trade stocks but since I am not yet 18 I don't know how to do that or if I can, I think I could make a joint account with one of my parents but I was wondering how or if it was possible to trade if your under 18? 3. I was looking at online brokers and the best deal seemed to be with wealthsimple's trading app since they had $0 commission fee's and looking at their other fee's for trading like currency conversion was lower than average, so would they be the best for someone with not a lot of money just starting out to trade? I also live in Canada and you seem to focus on Canadian investing so I figured you would be most knowledgeable about how to answer these questions. Also love your video's their are very well put together and make it super easy to understand investing. Thanks!

    • @ThePlainBagel
      @ThePlainBagel  5 лет назад +2

      Sorry for the delayed response.
      1) It's up to you whether you switch or not. Lower costs are a good things, but its difficult to compare the two knowing nothing about the mutual fund's strategy. If it's an active mutual fund, than you are asking whether you should be passively or actively invested, something that many investors debate on the daily! Take a look at the mutual fund and decide if its offering is worth the fee you're paying (i.e. is it just mimicking the index).
      2) As someone under the age of 18 you'll have to open a custodial account. I don't know much about them but yes it's like a joint account where your parent will have the final say on decisions. I would also talk to your parents about whether investing is the right move or whether you have other needs for your money (i.e. are you pursuing post-secondary education?).
      3) Any legitimate trading platform that offers 0 fee trading is a great way to trade in my opinion. There are limitations as to what you can buy, but you could easily find an S&P 500 ETF like you mentioned earlier. Certainly one way to trade.
      Hope this helps!
