One thing they don’t warn you about when you own a gelding; you’re the one cleaning his sheath 🥲

  • It’s that day of the year that every horse (and owner) loves! (Sarcasm)
Being a gelding, sheath cleaning is a huge part of ensuring Rudnik stays clean and healthy. For stallions/studs and in the wild, the male horses are able to keep themselves clean with use (no I’m not kidding). Unfortunately when you have a gelding, ‘it’ doesn’t get used as often so it’s up to us (the owners) to keep them clean.
Rudnik has always been such a good sport when it comes to this, even despite getting jabbed right before hand 🥲
It’s all just part of horse ownership, whether we like it or not! We want to ensure our horses are in their best physical health possible and this is just one small part of it.

I used to do that chore too. Its just part of owning a gelding. At least he stands quietly for it.....Truthfuly, I'd be thrilled to do any of those chores because it would mean I was able to have a horse again.

I have a mini gelding, 33”, and it’s a good thing I’m short and have small hands. I can’t feel him with gloves. He gets a good cleaning twice a year and he lets me know when he’s ready because he drops and shows me, until I’m ready and then he sucks himself in. It just takes a little time and patience and unlike a lot of folks, I don’t get grossed out. I should have been a nurse. What I do know is that by giving his sheath the cleaning he needs, I’m doing what is best for him. It’s not always pretty but it is satisfying. Oh, I clip and buff my nails first. If they’re sharp to me, they’ll be sharp on him.

They sound like the crunch bunch that I had to deal with years ago. That is why I built a barn to board my own horses. But low and behold, I was stricken with MS and ME/CFS + other autoimmune. I so admire people who know how to treat their horses. I can imagine you being nervous with the shots, I have been doing them for a while, and it does get easier.

In reference to the title. Some people do. I educate all my students on sheath care, bean removal, and udder care and cleaning for mares too. Many people forget that even a maiden mare has an udder and it gets pretty dirty in between the teats.
Using warm water and sheath cleaner makes the cleaning more enjoyable for the horse and more thorough.
If you have a gelding or mare who won’t allow you to clean in those sensitive areas, having your veterinarian do it when they do their yearly or every other year teeth floating is handy since they are under some meds for relaxation.

Whenever we had to clean the sheath of one of our geldings, we would usually use warm water on a sponge and put that up there to soften any clumps. And let the irrigation wash everything out. as for the shot, you did do it perfectly. The only thing I would suggest is next time bring a bottle of alcohol to clean the injection site.

How clever to stand under the sprinkler just enough not to get soaked This is why love I horses so much they surprise us all the time with their love and intelligence. @rudniktheroan  14 дней назад +3

It’s hardly punching, but when dealing with a horse who hasn’t had a ton of injection experience yet doing this will get that part of their skin used to having contact/pressure so that when the needle pokes them it’s not such a dramatic shock because you go from rubbing/patting the area to poking and it’s much less noticeable to them

Gee what did horses those thousands of years before we " broke them" do, before we put our hands inside their privates? Both male and female horses never need us humans hands inside their privates. Nature takes care of that issue.
I have had shots given where the person stabs me OR gently gives the shot. The difference was between pain for at least a couple of days, and a bit of a sting the first day. Oh yeah, horses feel those stab shots.
I know you love Rudnik, and nothing I say will change your ways with him. But he knew your intentions, and that other horse knew too. Thats why they were keeping away from you. I know I'm going to get negative on this post from the other subscribers, but I'm calling it the way I see it. BTW, I'm not keen on "farmers " or their vets putting their hand and arms all the way inside cows neither. It's not only disrespectful to the animal, it's very very painful.

They’re also not gelded in the wild which is majority of the reason they need this cleaning done. Domesticated horses have different requirements than wild horses which is why we as owners need to ensure we are doing our best to care for them

Sheath is another name for horse's penis but also old-fashioned name for condom. To avoid confusion just say penis when you mean penis.

Horses get hurt, but understand accidents happen, sort of like a dog. As long as you are 90% loving they can forgive. Also if other horses are vying for your attention, SEPARATE them. Be the authority figure!

You didnt know, you have to stick your hand up in that sheath and clean it? Thats why i owned mares. That part was easier. If you dont clean it, when you trot the horse, you will hear a whomp whomp whomp.

@rudniktheroan I'm sorry. Just get a warm washcloth and a bucket of warm water and gloves. Two times a year, should be fine. It's hard to believe, a horse's testicle's, play a huge part in keeping that area clean.

I typically use the tail end of my rope to spin it at the naughty horse and make them back up away from me so then I am in charge and driving the alpha horse away. So annoying. I’ve had a mare he wasn’t normally in with drive him running away from me. She would not let me catch him. Someone who knew her better got her to go away.
