- I always wondered if it was easy to grow an apple orchard, so I made it happen. I spent 2 years turning my backyard into one. But I heard that when you plant apples from seed, not all of them will produce fruit identical to the original apple seed.
So you might end up with apples you can’t actually eat. That’s why cutting a piece of the original tree and planting it in the ground is the preferred method of growing apple trees - but I didn’t believe that until I could see it with my own eyes.
Well, that’s when the adventure began, and it all started with a honey crisp apple. So - next time you're enjoying a crisp, juicy apple, remember that the seeds inside have the potential to grow into a whole new apple tree, given the right conditions.

Facts You’ll Learn In This Video:
1. Peeling the outer layer of skin off of apple seeds will help them germinate at a faster rate than leaving the skin on.
2. Apple seeds have the power to germinate inside of the apple itself. This is a process called “vivipary,” and this happens because the seeds inside the apple are surrounded by flesh, which provides them with moisture and nutrients to develop and grow. As the seeds begin to sprout, they can push through the apple's flesh, breaking through the skin and eventually growing into a new apple tree.
3. You can prompt vivpary to take place by leaving the apple out in a warm and moist environment for 24 hours, then placing it in the fridge for 48 hours, and you may just see sprouting seedlings inside of your apple.
4. Not all apple seeds will germinate successfully, and even those that do may not produce an apple tree that bears fruit identical to the original apple. This is because apple trees are often cross-pollinated, meaning the seeds may contain genetic material from other apple trees in the area.
5. There are pink-fleshed apples that exist. They are called ‘rose apples,” and they taste like strawberry lemonade. They are less acidic than regular apples. An Oregon farmer discovered the pink flesh after taking a bite out of one of the apples on his trees in the 60s, but it didn’t start to become commercially available until a few years ago! It’s a natural hybrid.
6. Ginkgo Trees are not in fact crab apples, but a tree that produces a nut! It’s one of the oldest tree species on earth and is often referred to as the ‘living fossil’ because it has remained relatively unchanged for millions of years. They’ve got a distinct taste and texture, and they are commonly found in desserts.

The nice thing is that, even if apples grow that you don't like, or if no apples grow at all, you will have a solid rootstock in place. You can graft whatever variety you DO like onto it in the end, which will save you multiple years trying to do it again.

I've attempted to grow apples for almost a year now, but haven't gotten them over the seedling phase. However, seeing you try inspired me a week or so ago and now have 4 seedlings in soil! Every time I eat an apple, I search for already sprouting seeds to germinate 😂

Unfortunately it takes 7-10 years for an apple tree to grow from seed to flourishing apples to potentially eat. But fun to do nevertheless

You can try planting a living apple cottage leaving space for a door and weaving walls and window holes for making your very own living abode. You can also use willow for that but apples, pears, quinces, damson, plum, cherry and such work great.

Something really cool I think I should share is that there are estimated to be thousands of varieties of apples that are lost to time. Trees of those ancient varieties are scattered across the United States, I wonder if that’s the same in Canada?

You are a good inspiration for the passion that I have. I grow veggies and fruits that don’t normally grow in the environments I’m in just to see if I can do it! We moved from Albuquerque New Mexico to San Antonio Texas recently so I can’t wait to try things here. It’s more humid and tropical in this area so I’m going to try and grow mango and bananas here!

It's actually not just cross pollination, apples are a genetic mess, they have copies of all their genes and a genome that's more than twice as large as the human genome... all of this makes it impossible to predict what kind of fruit a seedling will bare...

Planting a clipping in the ground to grow another plant is called "rooting", juar like how you place a clipping in a jar of water until it grows roots. Willow and forsythia are famous for doing this spontaneously. "Grafting" is where you surgically attach a limb from one variety of a tree onto another tree of the same family. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafting As you said, apples don't always grow true to seed, and the only way to assure propagation is by attaching a clipping from the preferred variety to a root stock of a hardy variety.
P.S. It can take 8 years to get apples from seedlings.
