Thank you Larisa. This video was very helpful to me. I have a large set of Rembrandt pastels, and recently began learning to paint by following along with some of the RUclips painting videos. But I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting the same clean color layers. My pastels tend to mix with the color underneath. Now I realize that many of the pros are using soft pastels. You are so right. Different types of pastels will give you different results! That was something that no one else ever mentions.
Mooshieloo That's great! :D Another thing that can hugely affect that is the paper, are you using a sanded paper like Pastelmat, UART or Colourfix? I am thinking of doing a similar video to this one where I compare Pastelmat, UART and Ingres paper because I got some questions on that theme :)
Larisa, Thank you so much for your advice. I recently started using Canson Mi-Tientes paper, because it was recommended by another artist on RUclips. It's a good paper, but I don't think it's sanded. I use fixative between the pastel layers. I've checked into ordering UART paper, but it's far beyond my budget at this time. I will try to get some eventually. Thanks again for all your inspiring lessons. Your work is stunning.
Larisa, thanks so much for this comparitive demonstration. It was exactly what I was looking for. I am very happy with The Rembrandt pastels but am looking into getting super soft ones as well and am interested in Sennelier. This demonstration shows how they compare. Beautifully done! Thanks again!
You are a sweet girl Larisa..and I love the way you speak English..and thank you so much for that short but very knowledgeable video...with a lot of clarity 😊😊🙏
I have not used Pastels in over 25 years so I am looking to get back into painting with them! Thank you for your video! I am looking forward to more and I will follow over on IG too!
Thank you very much for taking the time to make these videos and answer these questions. This was very helpful for me as a new pastel painter. Blessings, Stacy
Thank you for making this really good video, showing clearly the difference between these two types of pastels. I have a set of Rembrandts but no really soft pastels at the moment. I can now see that I do indeed need some!
Good day Larisa! Great to have another video/voiceover. Amazing what you do with this medium, nice detail considering small area. Your tutorials concise, good information. Thank you. Hope all is well, have good holiday. Take care
Thank you Larisa for the informative video. I want to know if Rembrandt pastels are more softer than the Korean Mungyo pastels. I have the Mungyo Gallery MPA 60 pastels. But I am not quiet happy with them. So I need to know if I can go for the Rembrandt, if they are more softer in comparison with Mungyo. Can you help me decide.
Cool. Thank you very much for this very helpful video. I thought Rembrandt was the most expensive....i am a newbie....and don't want to invest a lot of money right away.....i found that FAber CAstell mini soft pastels are pretty good in price, also Kohe Noor which is double the price.....Rembrandt where i live is about 7 times more expensive than Faber castel. My teacher advices me to buy a minimum of 120 pieces of Rembrandt or worse come to worse 72 piece....both are very hard to find where i live, i have searched a lot but only managed to find 48 pieces with FAber Caster and Kohe Noor.....i don't really know what to do. Should I buy the chalk type which are harder or the soft type like FAber Castell. I found that the Rembrandt you did seems more attractive and the softer one seemed more amateur looking.......also what liquid did you use at the beginning please? water or alcohol? Thanks very much for your help.
Thanks, very helpful :-) I’m considering buying some hand made soft Pastels to ad to my set of hard Pastels and Pastel Pencils, are looking out for a small set, say 20 ? Do you have any recommendations?
Li Art Sennelier or Unison sets of half pastels (the pastels in my box are almost all halves), I'm not sure which kinds of paintings you make so I can't suggest one specific set :) Both Unison's and Sennelier's pastels are available in different small sized sets of half pastels (around 16, 24, 30,...) and different color selections (general selection, landscape, seascape, wildlife, portrait etc.) and they usually cost less than comparable companies, like Schmincke. Schmincke is probably the softest, but Sennelier's are very comparable to them, but quite more affordable. Some people love Schminckes the most, some don't want to use anything other than Unison and the same goes for other companies, so it really depends on your style of painting :) I love all of them but each brand for a slightly different purpose. Even within sets handmade pastels are quite different, for example darker ones are usually considerably harder than pure colors. But all handmade ones I've tried until now have been very pigmented so just buy which ones you can get cheaper :D
Pastelmat paper :) I would suggest Rembrandt's since they are still high quality as quite soft, but don't cost as much as other softer ones. I just published a new video and I only used those there, so you can see they are quite good, I actually like them a lot.
A great video. I have just come across your channel and shall be subscribing. I too got my pastels on offer from Cassart. It was a great saving compared to other sites.
I agree, I've been using them more and more lately and often don't even need the super soft ones at all :) I do still like the vibrancy of the softer ones a lot though
Charlie gruchy Exactly! I got them from a store in UK which ships wordlwide for free for orders over 100£, they are called Cassart. I also recieved a student 10% discount on the whole order :)
Nice video but please speak more loudly and clearly. Some folks are hearing impaired and even with the volume on high, if you do not speak with good articulation and volume it is very difficult to hear.
Se ve que pintas bien y tenes una voz muy agradable. Por que no haces vídeos en español? Tu inglés no es muy bueno. Y dejas a muchos otros que no entienden bien en las sombras. Una pena por que tenés 1 potencial enorme....

at first i didnt understand why u were using so much brown for the background and it ended up looking beautiful with the green on top, i love it💗
I use rembrandt soft pastels too.. and I am satisfied..👍 very soft pastels make colors so vibrant but seems so much layered but not bad..
Thank you Larisa you are very generous your pastel work is lovely

On what paper did you do this. I want to start with pastels. What set would you suggest .
Pastelmat paper :) I would suggest Rembrandt's since they are still high quality as quite soft, but don't cost as much as other softer ones. I just published a new video and I only used those there, so you can see they are quite good, I actually like them a lot.
Hello, what paper are you working on? Velours? Pastelmat?
Yes, it's Pastelmat :)
I am in love with pastels
They really are beautiful to work with :)
Wonderful! Thank you.
A great video. I have just come across your channel and shall be subscribing. I too got my pastels on offer from Cassart. It was a great saving compared to other sites.
I prefer the look of the Rembrandt. Plus they’re not nearly as messy and expensive as the super soft pastels.
I agree, I've been using them more and more lately and often don't even need the super soft ones at all :) I do still like the vibrancy of the softer ones a lot though
What Liquid You used ? Water!
Arunkumar Vishwakarma it’s alcohol 70% the kind you buy at Walmart or a pharmacy
did u say Rembrandts for $45 a set.. that set would coat hundreds here? where did yiu buy them?
Charlie gruchy Exactly! I got them from a store in UK which ships wordlwide for free for orders over 100£, they are called Cassart. I also recieved a student 10% discount on the whole order :)
i got a 120 half stick set of rembrandt for £44
Thank you
