  • Sen. Tim Scott, a GOP presidential candidate, responded Sunday to criticism from former President Barack Obama, who said last week that voters have a right to be skeptical about minority candidates who ignore some of the racial divides in this country. Scott said he considers criticism from Obama a "compliment." Janelle King, the former deputy state director of the Georgia Republican Party, and Democratic strategist Joel Payne joined CBS News to talk about the words between Scott and Obama and what it means to be a Black conservative.

Black conservatives need only to look at Alabama and Mississippi and understand the real meaning of conservatism. By the way, the US Supreme Court has recently ruled that conservative Alabama Legislature must revamp the congressional map to include another congressional Black seat, making two seats rather the one seat. I’m from SC and what Scott never points out is he was not elected. He was appointed to the Senate seat. Once there the establishment didn’t allow for anyone else and the majority white in SC vote for anyone under the banner of R. If he were to have serious competition from a white man he would be toast. My Republican co-workers asked me what I thought of him. I told them he is a decent man but since I don’t believe in trickle down economics that I certainly don’t agree with any of his policies. They everyone told me they thought he used the race card. They are offended that he talks about his grandfather picking cotton when they said most every southern at one time picked cotton. No comment whatsoever on his policies. I just nodded and said that’s interesting knowing that Scott may believe he is not the victim of racism but who am I to tell him.

I like that this is a respectful conversation, but here she is distorting the actual facts. She either failed math or is willfuly ignorant. From the less than 1% of police interactions that end in police brutality, yes, most of those are with white Americans at face value. 1% of 60 mil is 600.000 instances of police brutality. Out of those instances you would expect in plain numbers that the majority is with white Americans, because the US is a majority white country right now. The 2020 Census says the white population is at around 60 % and the black American population is at around 13 %. According to this ratio you would expect more or less these numbers to be reflected with police brutality instances. BUT IT'S NOT. The numbers are not proportionate to the population. Far more black Americans are involved in these police brutality instances percentagewise. White Americans still are the most involved in those instances, but to a far lesser percentage than their share of the population overall.
2021 police shot and killed at least 1,055 people nationwide. Black people accounted for 27 % (not 13) of those fatally shot and killed by police in 2021. Which means that black people are twice as likely as other ethnicities to be shot and killed by police officers. Think about it, the percentage of other ethnicities must either go down (white Americans) or it increases much less than that of blacks (and the percentage of other ethnicities decreases even more).
That Republicans try to distort these facts is a problem.

It's so good to see/hear an intellectual political discussion amongst Black Americans with different political philosophies. They are actually addressing the issues even though it is through a racial lens....which is a reality for many of us. The black Republicans that we typically see on TV are nothing like the black republicans that I have experienced in real life. Janelle is the black conservative I know. Those Candace Owens type of people....too much clownery for me.

Even if accurate, she is presenting statistics in a deceitful way. This is a method used by white nationalist to trick people into thinking police brutality against black people is not real. The real issue is whether being black increases your odds of being brutalized by the police or not; black people have been claiming this for generations. Thats the issue. Her statement "60 million police interaction with less than one percent ends in police brutality, and most of it is white american." does not address the claim. The number of police interactions is not relevant to whether being black makes you more likely to be brutalized. What we would look at is, of the people that were brutalized, how many are black or what percent were black? She is arguing in bad faith.

Great conversation. She had me agreeing until 12 minutes into the conversation. I think she is misquoting the "police brutality" statistic though. The statistic she is referring to is deaths which is different than police brutality. The amount of deaths between races are probably equal. The data shows that non-whites are target 3 times more than there counterparts. I think most perceptions that non whites have with the police is something they experience or saw first handed not necessarily some narrative. Also, by definition "PSTD" is something you have experienced. Lastly, MD didn't have long lines like GA did in the past election. MD made it very easy for people to vote.

Let's not forget about Herschel Walker, who was a mess of a black man. Not really a great look from the right. Just my opinion. But this conversation needs to be had on how the Republicans keep portraying black men.

That’s still 600,000 incidents of police brutality a year… For the sake of evenness, that’s 12,000 incidents per year per state… Let’s say out of the 12,000 instances of police brutality per year in an individual state, only 10% of the victims were Black. That’s still 1,200 Black individuals per year, per state, for a grand total of 60,000 incidents of police brutality against Black individuals nationally… That’s just 0.1% of all police interactions… That’s absolutely no excuse to be okay with there still being 60,000 incidents annually.

Looking at the comment section by a bunch of Democrats, both white and black, is beyond weird for this 60-something black woman looking outside of politics. Unfortunately, many of you fail to realize how white Democrats actually contributed to the early rise of the black conservative in the 1980s, not to be confused with the Booker T. Washington conservativism after Reconstruction. Both white Democrats and black conservatives embraced the notion of color blindness when it came to defining the CRM. This ideology was not embraced by black Democrats. One thing is clear, black conservatives have done little to distance themselves from the right-wing conservatism largely supported by Herman Cain and Allen West in the same way that the Republican Party has done little to distance itself from overt white supremacists.
The last point I feel compelled to make on this topic is that everyone, Democrat or Republican, has failed to take note that black "Democrats," like Daisy Bates and Jesse Jackson, have actually delivered the black Democratic vote to the Republican Party for one reason or another since the CRM ended. I guess we'll all have to wait until someone white writes the book about this phenomenon before anyone wants to have this conversation.

The justice has lost respect for their own wisdom and knowledge. No individual is perfect. The people believe they strive to be perfect. It is easier to forgive a justice striving for perfection than it is to forgive a group of men void of wisdom, knowledge, character, and morals. I have never even the injustice that the founding fathers went through to build this country until recent years in America. President Lincoln saved this democracy. Lincoln was a lawyer. The south sold this country to the French. In 1861 Jefferson Davis and a few of his extremely wealthy friends 50 million dollars from france with Napoleon's blessing. Napoleons also had 50,000 troops in Mexico in 1861. Napoleons' had an additional 200,000 troops in germany in 1861. That is what that 50 million dollars paid for. For the record Napoleon was defeated by Germany and surrendered in 1870!

The problem is the American pie is getting smaller and smaller and there isn't enough to go around. Black conservatives willing ignore that fact. As more of the wealth is concentrated to top their will be more rollbacks of civil liberties for African Americans. This happened after reconstruction. Black people had 20 years of civil liberties, they could own land, they could vote, run for public office and had equal status under the law but than it was taken away. The Supreme Court sided against black people in Board v Brown. So history is repeating itself after yesterday Supreme Court decision ironically both court cases started as arguments over education.
