Examining Black conservatism after Obama, Scott trade words on race in America

- Sen. Tim Scott, a GOP presidential candidate, responded Sunday to criticism from former President Barack Obama, who said last week that voters have a right to be skeptical about minority candidates who ignore some of the racial divides in this country. Scott said he considers criticism from Obama a "compliment." Janelle King, the former deputy state director of the Georgia Republican Party, and Democratic strategist Joel Payne joined CBS News to talk about the words between Scott and Obama and what it means to be a Black conservative.

Janelle King saying that Black Americas need to stop complaining about racial injustice...and then minutes later complaining that Black Conservatives don't have the same opportunities as Black Liberals. Ironic?
I heard down the Grape vine Barrack Obama Bombed a child , IN 2010, PRESIDENT Obama directed the CIA to assassinate an American citizen in Yemen, Anwar al-Awlaki, despite the fact that he had never been charged with (let alone convicted of) any crime, and the agency successfully carried out that order a year later with a September 2011 drone strike.
Think you missed what she was saying. On news networks and the like generally don’t find any black conservatives unless it’s Fox News or something like. Hearing from black people on the conservative side of the aisle should be out there more on cnn and cbs and the like
@@tyhchsthat’s not what she was saying!!
This lady lied about police brutality stats, lied about suppression of black votes. She said she is a conservative because of her conviction, but black progressives are progressives because of what they are told. How can anyone take this lady serious. She claims socialism has not worked any where. She must not have heard of countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, UK, France Canada. Etc.
The issue she brought up was about political leanings, not race. There are conservatives, who happen to be black, and are being alienated. They aren't being alienated from opportunities because they are black...
Let's put Scott in an older used car and casual clothes and let me pick 5 neighborhoods in the South for him to spend an hour driving around in each and we'll see if he changes his mind about race in America
He’s previously commented that he’s been pulled over for driving while black. Yet somehow he still thinks there’s no discrimination
@@steveguillory7568 He is delusional!!!
He wouldn't because he's a token for the GOP. If he talked differently than what he was programmed to say, he would see how fast they" ditch him and treat him like any other Black man in America.
❤💪🏾💯
Black conservatives need only to look at Alabama and Mississippi and understand the real meaning of conservatism. By the way, the US Supreme Court has recently ruled that conservative Alabama Legislature must revamp the congressional map to include another congressional Black seat, making two seats rather the one seat. This gerrymandering position was basis on racism.
Black Americans are no longer a minority in America, they're part of the majority and this is why they're starting to vote Republican.
You mean pro-white communism.
Michael Steele himself said that these people were not interested in attracting black people.

A manipulation of numbers. She was most likely arguing the total number of incidents instead of the percentage of incidents per capita. She's misleading people while knowing that black people are only 13% of the U.S. population. And then they wonder why we have trust issues.
I’m from SC and what Scott never points out is he was not elected. He was appointed to the Senate seat. Once there the establishment didn’t allow for anyone else and the majority white in SC vote for anyone under the banner of R. If he were to have serious competition from a white man he would be toast. My Republican co-workers asked me what I thought of him. I told them he is a decent man but since I don’t believe in trickle down economics that I certainly don’t agree with any of his policies. They everyone told me they thought he used the race card. They are offended that he talks about his grandfather picking cotton when they said most every southern at one time picked cotton. No comment whatsoever on his policies. I just nodded and said that’s interesting knowing that Scott may believe he is not the victim of racism but who am I to tell him.
This was a proper discourse. Well done y'all
I'm glad Jennelle doesn't know any black people who have a hard time voting. I'm very glad out of the maybe 1000 people she personally knows, none of them have a hard time voting. 👍🏾

It’s true Mrs. king said capitalism pulls you up from poverty, but without socialism (social security today) most retiring baby boomers would be under the poverty line. People aren’t responsible to invest without historic pensions and without social security. Even The UK and Europe has these social aids in place. We need a mix.
Social security is their money though. They paid into it.
This wasn't a debate. This was a one-sided interview for that black Republican woman to promote conservatism. And she took part of her time attacking the Democratic Party. I can't believe that black Democrat didn't stand up to her. But they gave more time to her than they did him. She was so irritating.
Tim Scott will NEVER admit that he has been stopped for DWB (Driving While Black). When that crap stops, then and only then can Tim Scott declare that racism is over.

How can you support a party that doesn't even respect your right to vote?
"discrimination...it's a heart issue that can't be legislated. That's why we focus on policy..." 🤔 Keep your career going, Janelle.
I caught that too.
Total contradiction, wasn't it? LOL.
Can’t change a person’s heart only thing you can do is make sure the policies are equal for everyone…🤷🏾♂️
@tyhchs the problem is that those "heart issue" people are in position making policy decisions that are detriment to the in this case the black experience/community. I really don't care if you are democrat, republican/conservatives or Independent. But the writing is on the wall, when people show you who you are believe them.
Your policies are a heart issue they’re racist
Democratic sitting there was just so weak. Should have asked her about the banning of black books. Taking away women rights, making all kinds of laws that affect us.
Maybe he was giving this minority position a chance. Or since she was supposedly describing her own experience he couldn't challenge it.
As a black conservative, I'm in awe at how the lady managed to put my thoughts so eloquently into words
Of course both you want to be white
were we to ignore voter suppression ?
The problem with making a statement like this is that unfortunately the Democratic Party has done just that for decades, and now they want to find fault with black conservatives who are now following suit.
What voter suppression?
Yes.
What a smart, high level discussion. REFRESHING! More of this, please!
This probably the most honest conversation I've seen in the main stream media.
That WAS NOT an honest conversation.😂
Very good point!
Not honest at all. All these bots commending a debate, please…rather them not keep the quiet part to themselves and say it out loud so we can call them out by name to their faces.
If you look at actual numbers you are right about policing, but when factor in population blacks are over police, she is delusional about voting rights in Georgia. Some of these people think we can't read or comprehend.

From which of his three mansions-Kalorama, Martha’s Vineyard, or the Hawaii beachfront-did the prep-schooled and Ivy-leagued multimillionaire Barack Obama sound off at Sen. Tim Scott, who had denied that he had been a victim?
This was an awesome discussion. I’m sure I will never become a conservative, however I see the need for equate weight amongst the two parties. Hopefully, this will make candidates more grateful for the votes they campaign for and truer to the issues they say are important to them.
Maybe 4 years of Biden will change your mind
Wow, a political debate where people aren’t just shouting over and interrupting each other! Never thought I’d see that!
I won't miss tRump insulting everyone including his so called "BEST PEOPLE" who all now are turning against the Orange Menace.
Listen to more moderates and conservatives of both parties. We do appreciate and encourage civil discourse.
Please that's because one was being respectful the lady was very rude.
I don’t even understand what Tim Scott is doing in this race! He has no chance of winning the Primary.
Just another grifter after money and power, it's just name recognition he's after works for MTG and Boebert they both get a lot of small dollar donations.
IIRC he started with the Democratic party, when they told him he'd have to 'work his way up' knocking on doors, organising etc, he trotted off to the GOP.
Big fish in a small pond of Black GOP representatives.
Tim Scott should drop out of the race for his Howard Dean scream in Iowa.
I was a die hard democrat, back in 2016 we hated trump to the core, I didn’t know why but I just went with the flow, 2020 came and everyone was talking good about Biden and next thing you know I was a Biden fan. During his presidency I’m starting to realize jus how important it is to have an independent thought process.

It is only in America that a president would allow that amount of people to die and did not Resign. He run for second term and loss then plan coup on his own country!! 👋

I like that this is a respectful conversation, but here she is distorting the actual facts. She either failed math or is willfuly ignorant. From the less than 1% of police interactions that end in police brutality, yes, most of those are with white Americans at face value. 1% of 60 mil is 600.000 instances of police brutality. Out of those instances you would expect in plain numbers that the majority is with white Americans, because the US is a majority white country right now. The 2020 Census says the white population is at around 60 % and the black American population is at around 13 %. According to this ratio you would expect more or less these numbers to be reflected with police brutality instances. BUT IT'S NOT. The numbers are not proportionate to the population. Far more black Americans are involved in these police brutality instances percentagewise. White Americans still are the most involved in those instances, but to a far lesser percentage than their share of the population overall.
2021 police shot and killed at least 1,055 people nationwide. Black people accounted for 27 % (not 13) of those fatally shot and killed by police in 2021. Which means that black people are twice as likely as other ethnicities to be shot and killed by police officers. Think about it, the percentage of other ethnicities must either go down (white Americans) or it increases much less than that of blacks (and the percentage of other ethnicities decreases even more).
That Republicans try to distort these facts is a problem.
Let me ask you this, if you can't change the blockage of the institution of racism that were established in America after the Civil War such as redlining, segregation, Jim Crow through legislation, then how do we change it?
I can't even the news desk persons are trying to say what r u talking about young lady

What a wonderful conversation. It feels like such a long time since we have had respectful, civil discourse in the media. Like some of the other comments say, what a great political conversation. No insults, no name calling, just pure respectful conversation.
Ya boy trump calls people horrible names every day. So don't vote for him or you are part of the problem he will continue to divide
I’m a black gen-z voter and I will never cast a ballot for a Republican. They’re too extreme on so many issues.
She said she doesn’t believe republicans need to do more acknowledge as a necessity to bring in black voters and then went on to say that the issue isn’t something politics can fix…so I hope she isn’t running for office in the campaign that she can do something more for black and brown folks when she said the Republican Party doesn’t believe there is anything more politically that can be done. Legislation is political, or at least the Republican Party makes it so. I have no idea what she is talking about and someone is telling her she is doing a great job. Weird but not crazy or unexpected…
I'm the opposite. I have kids and feel like the leftist agenda has gone too far.
Mason, as your generation ages, I hope you do away with this corrupt 2 party system. You can't trust either of them. They use us all, and line their pockets. I'm looking to your generation to take a stand. Pay attention and question everything.

So democrats are not extreme what about Hillary Clinton ? When were you born after 2008 ?
One more thing Yes blacks are doing well but the discussion is not about the succusses but the failures in our communities. Blacks escape the pit falls of poverty daily but poverty is the image we judge.
It's so good to see/hear an intellectual political discussion amongst Black Americans with different political philosophies. They are actually addressing the issues even though it is through a racial lens....which is a reality for many of us. The black Republicans that we typically see on TV are nothing like the black republicans that I have experienced in real life. Janelle is the black conservative I know. Those Candace Owens type of people....too much clownery for me.
Nothing wrong with Candace Owens
I like and respect his mindset
Interesting conversation. I want to see the research docs mentioned about police brutality as I don't believe it's correct!! 🤔
Even if accurate, she is presenting statistics in a deceitful way. This is a method used by white nationalist to trick people into thinking police brutality against black people is not real. The real issue is whether being black increases your odds of being brutalized by the police or not; black people have been claiming this for generations. Thats the issue. Her statement "60 million police interaction with less than one percent ends in police brutality, and most of it is white american." does not address the claim. The number of police interactions is not relevant to whether being black makes you more likely to be brutalized. What we would look at is, of the people that were brutalized, how many are black or what percent were black? She is arguing in bad faith.
Great conversation. She had me agreeing until 12 minutes into the conversation. I think she is misquoting the "police brutality" statistic though. The statistic she is referring to is deaths which is different than police brutality. The amount of deaths between races are probably equal. The data shows that non-whites are target 3 times more than there counterparts. I think most perceptions that non whites have with the police is something they experience or saw first handed not necessarily some narrative. Also, by definition "PSTD" is something you have experienced. Lastly, MD didn't have long lines like GA did in the past election. MD made it very easy for people to vote.
I'd be great if these kind of segments included cited articles or some form of information backing up numbers and claims
And how many black voters does Mrs King know, she acts as if she know everyone in Georgia.
You Cannot legislate a person's morality

A Black batchelor President? Needs to be discussed.
Right. I think Tim Scott inadvertently upholds the stereotype of "black men can't keep a family", even though he legitimately maybe single because he wants to be, who knows why he decides to run as the first black president who is a bachelor. Let's not forget about Herschel Walker, who was a mess of a black man. Not really a great look from the right. Just my opinion. But this conversation needs to be had on how the Republicans keep portraying black men.

There are her stats… 60 million police interactions a year, 1% is police brutality. That’s still 600,000 incidents of police brutality a year… For the sake of evenness, that’s 12,000 incidents per year per state… Let’s say out of the 12,000 instances of police brutality per year in an individual state, only 10% of the victims were Black. That’s still 1,200 Black individuals per year, per state, for a grand total of 60,000 incidents of police brutality against Black individuals nationally… That’s just 0.1% of all police interactions… That’s absolutely no excuse to be okay with there still being 60,000 incidents annually.

Looking at the comment section by a bunch of Democrats, both white and black, is beyond weird for this 60-something black woman looking outside of politics. Unfortunately, many of you fail to realize how white Democrats actually contributed to the early rise of the black conservative in the 1980s, not to be confused with the Booker T. Washington conservativism after Reconstruction. Both white Democrats and black conservatives embraced the notion of color blindness when it came to defining the CRM. This ideology was not embraced by black Democrats. One thing is clear, black conservatives have done little to distance themselves from the right-wing conservatism largely supported by Herman Cain and Allen West in the same way that the Republican Party has done little to distance itself from overt white supremacists.
The last point I feel compelled to make on this topic is that everyone, Democrat or Republican, has failed to take note that black "Democrats," like Daisy Bates and Jesse Jackson, have actually delivered the black Democratic vote to the Republican Party for one reason or another since the CRM ended. I guess we'll all have to wait until someone white writes the book about this phenomenon before anyone wants to have this conversation.

The justice has lost respect for their own wisdom and knowledge. No individual is perfect. The people believe they strive to be perfect. It is easier to forgive a justice striving for perfection than it is to forgive a group of men void of wisdom, knowledge, character, and morals. I have never even the injustice that the founding fathers went through to build this country until recent years in America. President Lincoln saved this democracy. Lincoln was a lawyer. The south sold this country to the French. In 1861 Jefferson Davis and a few of his extremely wealthy friends 50 million dollars from france with Napoleon's blessing. Napoleons also had 50,000 troops in Mexico in 1861. Napoleons' had an additional 200,000 troops in germany in 1861. That is what that 50 million dollars paid for. For the record Napoleon was defeated by Germany and surrendered in 1870!
The ironic thing is everyone is black in this segment. Things have changed. This should be satire. But, certain politicians will tell you can't make it. Its false.

I'd chime-in with my slight conversion to anarchism, when I was undergoing extreme stress. I am a liberal in the context of my religion. However, I am republican, born in America with Panamanian heritage. Economics is not politics, and neither is one's financial choice. My undergrad degree is in Business with a minor in political science. I agree with the conversation in the video: Poltics is about decision-making.

She said they the Republicans focus on policies. Where are the policies? show me.
The problem is the American pie is getting smaller and smaller and there isn't enough to go around. Black conservatives willing ignore that fact. As more of the wealth is concentrated to top their will be more rollbacks of civil liberties for African Americans. This happened after reconstruction. Black people had 20 years of civil liberties, they could own land, they could vote, run for public office and had equal status under the law but than it was taken away. The Supreme Court sided against black people in Board v Brown. So history is repeating itself after yesterday Supreme Court decision ironically both court cases started as arguments over education.
