  • Top Solar Energy Producing Countries, Per Person, 1990 - 2022
    In this video I look at countries trying to move off fossil fuels by producing more solar energy. I used per capita (per person) because it shows us who is putting more of their resources into the transition to solar energy.
    Solar energy has been used by humans since the beginning of time. The first use of solar energy was for cooking and heating. Here are some important dates in the history of solar energy production:
    1883 - First solar cells made from selenium at 1% efficiency
    1954 - First solar cells made from silicon at 6% efficiency, at $300/watt
    1960 - Hoffman Electronics achieve 14% efficiency by 1960
    1964 - Nimbus launched with solar panels able to power entire spacecraft.
    1973 - University of Delaware builds first building powered by solar roof tiles similar to Tesla solar tech
    1979 - President Jimmy Carter had solar panels installed on the White House at $70/watt
    1985 - University of South Wales achieves 20% generation efficiency
    1999 - National Renewable Energy Laboratory achieves 33.3% efficiency
    2016 - University of South Wales achieves 34.5% generation efficiency
    Thank you for watching!

    Japan is easily understandable. Ironically, they leave this ranking more or less at the time of the Fukushima disaster, to then develop solar energy at an impressive and sustained rate.
    For their top 1 between 1999 and 2003 (even 2004, because there is no one in Luxembourg, it's cheating). I personally interpret it as their ecological conscience certainly "already there" culturally. And perhaps because their scientists and industries are more focused on technical and optimization challenges where others would be more inclined to abandon or reduce research. I am thinking for example of their recent achievement on the difficult rotating detonation engine. But maybe I'm wrong.

    There is no wonder that Australia is No.1 of Solar energy. Because Australia has a lot of area to install solar panels. Sadly,Japan has no wide area to install solar panels. Japan try to utilize even small areas between train rails to install solar panels,though.

    From the USA perspective, I'd be curious to see how politics played a role in this. The USA was on the list until 2009 and then came back on the list in 2015 and stayed there until the end. So there was only a 6yr period where we weren't in the top and all 6yrs were under Obama's 8yr presidency. If I had to guess before watching the video, I would have assumed that we would have fallen off under Trump's presidency. Just found that curious.

    • @tobyk.4911
      @tobyk.4911 Год назад +2

      I'd guess that by 2016, photovoltaic solar panels had become so cheap that it made a lot of sense to invest in solar power from a purely economical perspective, with our without government support, so that it didn't depend so much anymore on what the federal administration did and whether someone like Trump is leading it or not.
      The USA (well, at least most of it, excluding Alaska) have much more potential for solar power generation than e.g. Germany (much more unused space, and much more solar radiation, especially in the south and the southwest). And the US population and companies have the necessary money for these investments. So it makes sense that the US would start investing more and catch up at some time.

      @tobyk.4911 Год назад +1

      Yes, there's really no good reason why the USA are behind countries like Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands... Most of the US are further south (nearer to the equator) than these countries, get much more sunshine / solar radiation, and have much more space per person (i.e. lower population density). Especially if you think of states like Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.

    Germany increased its per capita capacity 200 times in the 2000s, but it has only doubled in the last decade and they love to be proud of being a "green country". Japan and Australia, on the other hand, has multiplied their per capita capacity by ten in the last 10 years. I am noticing in the current energy crisis that much of what Europe does is greenwashing, but that in practice little is being done to decarbonise energy generation. There is an aesthetic tendency to greenwash everything, like building wooden buildings - rationally speaking, wouldn't it be better to focus on decarbonizing power generation first as this has easy and obvious solutions?

    • @mr.munger
      @mr.munger 2 года назад +3

      Usually doing per-capita makes things more comparable across vast population sizes. I'm sure if they just did "total solar" China and India would be in the top 2 spots, but they also have the most people by a wide margin. Per capita isn't always a perfect measure either. Which is why Luxembourg briefly skyrocketed to the top. They're are a super small country and probably built 1 large solar field and it jumped them to #1 for a bit.

      Разве что СЭС-5, но та к 1990 произвела всего 2 млн кВт*ч за пять лет. Т.е. в среднем 400 000 кВт*ч в год. Поделить на 290 млн человек населения -- 0.00137 кВт*ч на человека за год. В самом начале видео как раз январь 1990 и у последнего в топе Китая чуть больше -- 0.002.
      В ролике сравнивается выработка _электричества_ (т.е. всякие солнечные коллекторы используемые просто для нагрева воды не в счет) в пересчете на человека. За 2020 год в России солнечная энергетика произвела всего 15 кВт*ч на человека.
