Never knew of this version until hearing it in the closing sequence to an episode to True Detective, and then to discover that this singer is the original writer of the song. This is my favorite version now.
Right up there with John Hartford writing & performing! of all who did this song IMHO this is the absolute best. A lesson to any performer on how to vocally emote!
@@davidshepherdgrossman Thanks for your reply. Over the weekend WFDU FM out of Teaneck N.J. Can't belive I missed out on this until now... Been somewhat obsessed with this song since the first time watching Big Lebowski and wasn't that long ago since my last search for covers of it... Superb version!
@@davidshepherdgrossman Stupid of me to never thought about checking out who was the composer... Somehow got the impression that it was, if not written by Kenny Rogers, so maybe for him. Guess that has some to do with that it seemed like Rogers was the one reaching a bigger audience, if that was the case? Never investigated that either*shame on my behalf* This is also a bit before my time, so I took it fore granted for some reason.. Also in my defence is that I'm from the other side of the world from the states and have a diverse range of music preferences... Many thanks for making me aware of this nevertheless! Appreciate it!
No worries. Few people know about Mickey Newbury compared to Kenny Rogers. Mickey never had a hit with any of his own songs. Kenny Rogers had the biggest hit with Dropped In. Check out more of Mickey Newbury though on RUclips. You will be amazed.
The Spotify version has a cello and a violin added to this. Check it out, folks! The album is called Winter Winds. Kinda cathedral acoustic country music with no drums. Spiritual...
Didn't think I would like this version, but this performer is top of the line. Much better than Tom Jones' version or Willie Nelson's version. What a great artist!
Awesome song and performance. Just learned about Mickey Newbury while reading RUclips comments on Kenny Rogers/First Edition's version of this song. How cool to be able to see and hear his version!
Mickey Newbury was outlaw before there was an outlaw movement and he disdained it saying, "It's just categorizing again, making a new pigeon-hole to stick somebody into. You got to be dressed a certain way, you got to be a drinker and a hell-raiser, cuss and make an ass of yourself, act like a kid. I've told 'em I quit playing cowboys when I grew up. I just get turned off by all that." bitemyfoot.org.uk/omaha/or13/or13_03.html
When I met Mickey Newbury I had no idea who he was or how good he was. I was backstage tuning my guitar and he was next to me and asked what I was tuning my guitar to...I said my harmonica. He said, "You don't have an electric tuner?" It was 1988 tuners were not everywhere like they are today...I said, "No." He handed me his tuner and said, "You can have mine." He gave me the tuner to keep! Then he performed the best solo show I had ever seen. Check out more songs. Mickey's worth it.
It was at The Sweetwater in Mill Valley. Yes I do remember and still have a copy of that recording. I have shared a little of it with the Facebook Group devoted to Mickey.
Believe it or not the late Kenny Rogers had one of his first top ten hit with this song when he was fronting for the First Edition back in 1967 and even sang it on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. ruclips.net/video/4rUjZ-wfJ-E/видео.html
@david for the record i will delete my original comment cause i didn't google the damn original writer lol thanks for correcting this makes sense how there is so much passion in it.

Years ago in the 1980s I was privileged to open for Mickey Newbury. He was the best solo performer I had ever seen. A master songwriter and performer.

I undersnad. He wistles better than many performers sing/play.
Mickey Newbury blows my mind every time I watch this. Gives me chills, makes me want to smile and cry at the same time. Simply awesome
That whistling. That guitar. That voice. Such genius and artistry. By far the best recording I have ever heard of his masterpiece.

David Grossman oh I know. Of all his recordings, this is my favorite. Thanks again for posting this up!
