I was taught to put just a tiny bit on the boot just to make sure it doesn't get stuck on there or anything. I am not an expert mechanic in any way shape or form, I'm just one of those DIY guys lol. I have done it this way in 3 different cars, I bought this Cobalt brand new and put a total of 103,000 miles on it before it was totaled. I also put plenty of miles on my other cars and never had a problem by changing the spark plugs this way.I guess its up to you man, Im sure either way won't hurt.
Cool video, but are you sure that the Cobalt in this video is a 2007?From what I know is that the individual coil packs were not used until the 2008 model year. I worked on plenty of 2007's and they had that enormous cover that was one whole piece with all 4 spark plug boots.
@IrvingLudwig, the individual coil packs have nothing to do with the trim of Cobalt. That ECOTECS used by the Cobalts were the "Family II" The individual coil packs mark the beginning of the 2nd generation block of the family II's. I looked into it and they did start using the 2nd generation blocks in the 2nd half ofthe 2007 model year. There is a lot to explain but just know that te one whol piece coil is crap, these are better.
I recommend going to a local advanca auto, napa or auto zone, they should have the correct gap information on their computer. Just tell them your exact year and model.
i recently did a spark plug replacement on a 2.4 hhr with the ecotech, and our high dollar mechanic said we should replace the boots. i havent quite figured how how to do it yet, but the parts are ordered. and i havent come across a spark plug that it was necessary to set the gap since about 1998.
I noticed in the video your cobalt made that interference sound at 3:08 into the video..... Mines been doing that for the last four years now. Never could figure out why it does it, fucking annoying at times though. Does it LOUD through my stereo at times and other times it quiet. Does it like every city i drive into
That sound is pulse modulation caused by cell phones. Specifically, cell phones that use GSM networks. This happens whenever a signal is received. There are distinct patterns for incoming calls, SMS, MMS or profile updates.
Well I figured it out actually. When I first got the car, they installed a GPS tracking device right behind the stereo. When I paid the car off, they were supposed to take it out, but never did, Im not exactly sure how to take it out myself, so even to this day, I still hear that interference from time to time. Why they had to install it right behind the fucking stereo is beyond me, wish I could move it over away from the stereo. Its a little black square box with about 12 wires coming outta it. I know if I DC it, I cant start my car then so its gotta be hooked up into my ignition somewhere. I dont trust myself to take it out, I know alot about PC's and electronics, but that's not one of them. That little GPS thingy must use GSM then.
That's a variant of LoJack and a royal pain in the arse to remove without fucking shit up. Remove? No. Disable? Yes. Should be a red wire (power) for powering the unit and nothing else. Could be pink/white though. I'd need to check the wiring diagram. But it should be rather easy to disable. And yes, it's highly likely it uses GSM as its a cheap technology.
yeah they told me once I had the car paid off, the dealership would take it back out for me, I bought it at Dempsey. But Dempsey told me I had to take it to GM dealership to have it remove, and the GM dealer said they cant remove it for me cause they ain't the ones who installed it. so its like thx fuckers for sticking me with this thing. The only good thing about it is I got 2 dollars off of my car insurance, WHHOOOO haha
@suburbanator91 Yes I am 100% sure this is a 2007 model. I bought it brand new at the dealer. The tittle says 2007 and also when the insurance or anyone else would checked the VIN #, it would come up as an '07. Maybe the individual coil packs only came in the LS model which is the base model. Since the whole piece cover looks nicer, Im guessing they kept that for the LT's and SS'. Maybe IDK.
The "spark plug covers" are the ignition coils. It's called a coil-on-plug ignition system. I recomend replacing the coils along with the spark plugs, just because they both are recomended at every 100k miles or so. If you aren't using Iridium spark plugs, it may be sooner. The spark plugs are recomended at 20 ft lb. tight, but i normally just get them snug and turn them only a bit more. I dont think anti seize is exactly necessary, considering you dont even tighten the spark plug down that tight. You put a squirt of dielectric grease in the boot of each coil to prevent any kind of intereference like corrosion, and you pop the boot back on. then you only need to tighten the coils down to a snug feel. the only reason the bolt is there is so that they dont move around or pop off.
the spark plug gap spec is 0.044 inches, or 40 thousanths of an inch. You can easily get a small disc style spark plug gapper at any auto parts store. Old plugs are worn out and gap may have moved slightly on its own so DO NOT gap the new ones based on the old ones. It isn't that hard to google "*Year* *Make* *Model* spark plug gap"
Those spark plug coil packs are about 50 bucks a pop..replacing them when theres nothing wrong with them is just throwing money away. Theure suppose to last for a long time and unless their cracked or damaged somehow you shouldnt have to change them for a long time
The best is to put the Dielectric silicone on the spark plug boot and anti seize on the spark plug threads .And don't change the plugs when the car is hot make sure the motors cool!
i need your opinions. i haven't done a tuneup since my 97 s-10 and this is a different method than the traditional wireset. when i do a tuneup on my cobalt do i need new boots? or just the plugs?? thanks guys
@Narugir Yeah you should deff. get that checked out. I have another video that shows how to change the fuel filter. Maybe your fuel is not running well through your fuel lines and filter which is why it may take a while for it to speed up. Becuase the fuel is not flowing properly. As for the lawnmower noise, Im not quite sure why man. Get it checked and do a tune up for sure.
Dielectric silicone is an electric insulator. Not a good idea to put it on the threads of the spark plug. It just increases the resistance. Just use a little dielectric on the boots with a q tip. Use anti seize compound on the treads if you are worried about them.
John Reid thanks man i made this 6 years ago just for fun so im no expert. I will take your advice for sure. Im just now finding out i have so many views lol
Good video but use antisieze on the threads and use a torque wrench to torque to spec. Last thing you want to do is over torque something going into the cylinder head. Good tip on checking the ignition before reattaching the bolt holding down plug wire harness.
@suburbanator91 Cool. I did buy this towards the end of '07 therefore its a late model year and that explains why it has the individual coil packs. Thanks for the info. And too bad my cobalt is totaled. Now I bought something else but I stuck with Chevy =D
so on a 2007 chevy cobalt, is the spark plug different than the ignition coil? also, if it is, if i change the ignition coils, do i have to change the spark plugs also?
Idk too much bout my 07 Cobalt LS, but dont you have to do the spark plugs in a certain order for the shooting order. If you have any idea what im talking about
@Evylnsyde1 Thanks man! I hope to bring more videos soon, unfortunately a lady hit my car yesterday on the passenger side. She messed it up big time, therefore it had to be towed = ( .....hopefully it will get fixed soon
Great video man very helpful. You sound like a friend of mine he's from El Salvador. Where are you from? Are you salvadorian? Lol random I know I was just curious. Great video anyways. Thanks.
Yeah i did check on the manual i have no idea why i didnt mention it. Im just going through the comments now bc i never realized how many views and comments i had lol.
go to autozone's home page Under repair help, specifications, ignition and tune-up. From there you can select make and model to lookup specs for gapping for you specific make/model/engine. it said there for 2009 Cobalt with 2.2L .043 (In thousandths of an inch)Caution! Gap is not adjustable on certain plug brands
why would u put that crap on the threads, put a little antiseize on them and ur good to go, that's all iv ever used in 8 years and iv never had issues with stuck spark plug.
tomjw7 very true it was 6 or 7 years ago and im no expert so i just uploaded it for fun. Im just now finding out how many views i have lol. I would never checj the videos ever.
Nice basic vid brother. Gap your plugs with a 1 dollar disc gapper using the gap info from a Chilton or Haynes manual or ask the people you bought the plugs from, they are more than happy to tell you the gap. Use silver high temp anti-seize on the plug threads. Make sure the plug conductor is seated completely. Using a torque wrench isn't a bad idea for newb's as experience with them is the best teacher. plu che... The commenter's do have some good point's, make a new vid or tell everyone being a dick to make their own video's on RUclips if they have such a problem. Take care man.
ya i double checked and had to gap 1 at 20 the which the other 3 were gaped thanks again for the help bud

I just changed my plugs in my 2006 Cobalt and want to say thank you...your video was a great help!!!
Thanx for the video man, this sparkplug layout is identical to the 06 ss non sc model too
mine is the same set up i have the 09 cobalt lt also got the ac delco how ever i didnt have to gap mine they came gaped already great video man

and george and irving are right, they usually come pregapped, but always good to check for yourself.

Thanks for the vid man! gonna replace my spark plugs today
my 07 cobalt lt also has the individual packs

Thanks! Its always best when they are already gapped but sometimes its good to double check.

great vids. I have changed the plugs and fuel filter on my 10 cobalt. thx man!
thanks, saved me bucks from the dealer.Plus upgraded to a premium plug, runs well.
Thanks for the vid man. I just changed my plugs on my HHR's 2.2 ecotec engine. Much appreciated man.
hay bud did u ever find out the gap for the spark plugs ??? i have the cobalt lt 09 to and cant find the proper gap
Good Job on this video man!!
@suburbanator91 my 07 cobalt ss has the individual coil pack also 2.4

Look simple thanks for the tips.
Hey, for the fuel filter, did you de-pressurize the system by bleeding fuel through the Schrader valve, or did you just start it up & pull the fuse?
How often should I change spark plugs
also is the 2.2 ecotec on a 2005 the same as this engine? or a diff setup?
@suburbanator91 Cool. I did buy this towards the end of '07 therefore its a late model year and that explains why it has the individual coil packs. Thanks for the info.
And too bad my cobalt is totaled. Now I bought something else but I stuck with Chevy =D

In 2007 the ignition system was changed to individual coils. There were problems with the other type which I have on my 2006.
you don't replace the boots or wires?
on this car there are none. it has a direct "coil on plug" style ignition. the ignition coils are the spark plug "covers" that he was referring to.
when you put the grease on the plastic did you put it on the the ring on inside the hole?
I'm trying to find a link for checking the radiator cap
I thought the 2.2 had the full coil pack where they are all connected.
Great info. bro.
Thanks, you just saved me $140. :)
Damn man clean that engine
His engine alot cleaner looking then mine haha, and I've had the ecotec cover on all these years.
I should have, unfortunately a month or two after the video someone crashed into me and totaled my car.
Idk too much bout my 07 Cobalt LS, but dont you have to do the spark plugs in a certain order for the shooting order. If you have any idea what im talking about
Nope, not necesary
best video for us chicks that like to do our own work
@futbolfan84 no problem! you are welcome
What's the gap supposed to be on?
+Mamba94 When you purchase your plugs, ask the salesperson. They have all that info on their computers.
the same gap as the front teeth of elton john
@Evylnsyde1 Thanks man! I hope to bring more videos soon, unfortunately a lady hit my car yesterday on the passenger side. She messed it up big time, therefore it had to be towed = ( .....hopefully it will get fixed soon
does anyone know where i can get new bolts for the boot of the spark plug, mine i rusted?
Great video man very helpful. You sound like a friend of mine he's from El Salvador. Where are you from? Are you salvadorian? Lol random I know I was just curious. Great video anyways. Thanks.
Do NOT match the gap of the old worn out plugs. Find the actual spec. Dielectric lube is for the boot. Anti-seize is for the threads.
other than that video is dam near perfect
Yeah i did check on the manual i have no idea why i didnt mention it. Im just going through the comments now bc i never realized how many views and comments i had lol.
They are not covers they are coil packs😬👍
thanks for the vid!
very helpful my good sir
go to autozone's home page
Under repair help, specifications, ignition and tune-up. From there you can select make and model to lookup specs for gapping for you specific make/model/engine.
it said there for 2009 Cobalt with 2.2L
.043 (In thousandths of an inch)Caution! Gap is not adjustable on certain plug brands
anti seize bro i
never seize compound on plug threads is always the best way to go.
why would u put that crap on the threads, put a little antiseize on them and ur good to go, that's all iv ever used in 8 years and iv never had issues with stuck spark plug.
tomjw7 very true it was 6 or 7 years ago and im no expert so i just uploaded it for fun. Im just now finding out how many views i have lol. I would never checj the videos ever.

thank you; i found the spark plugs , lol
+Juan Ángel García Cano LOL! Hope the tune up went well!

You're supposed to put copper based Anti-sieze on the plug threads and di-electric on the boot and/or ceramic. This video is horrible!
So easy compared to my V6. Haha
