- Hokkaido Milk Rolls are really tasty, pull apart, incredibly fluffy dinner rolls - you can make them at home from scratch! They are great for breakfast and any time of the day and these are way easier to do than you think.
Homemade Hokkaido Milk Rolls are light as air and super soft thanks to the amazing Japanese tangzhong technique. It's basically a roux mad from flour, water and milk. It is so suprising and incredible that only beacuse of those three simple ingredients you can bake fluffy dinner rolls so easily! Thanks to this method, they stay fresh for long, too. It is worth to experiment with tangzhong with other recipes, I think.
Hokkaido Milk Rolls are formed in a very unique way - it is very simple, though (see the video). You can shape them in a traditional bun shape, if you prefer. You don't have to leave much space during rising - our fluffy Japanese Rolls are pull apart dinner rolls after all.
Hokkaido Milk Rolls are the greatest treat for kids, thanks to their fluffy interior and soft crust. They taste so good with homemade jam or honey. You can also serve them with savory toppings, like cheese or ham. I simply love them with good quality butter! Fluffy Japanese Dinner Rolls are the best recipe for homemade buns from scratch. How to make Fluffy Japanese Dinner Rolls from Scratch ?
Hokkaido Milk Rolls Recipe, ingredients:
for the tangzhong:
3 tbsp of water
3 tbsp of milk
2 tbsp of bread flour
for the dough:
2 1/2 cups of bread flour,
2 tbsp of sugar,
1 tsp of salt,
1 tbsp of dry yeast,
1/2 cup of warm milk,
1 large egg,
60 g of melted unsalted butter
some milk, cream or egg wash for brushing the rolls before baking,
some butter for smearing baked rolls
Hokakido Milk Rolls, method:
Prepare the tangzhong: combine the water, milk and flour. Cook the mixture, until thickened to the consistency of roux / paste (see the video). Let it cool to room temperature.
Mix the eyast with milk and sugar, set aside for few minutes. When bubbly, add to the tangzhong and the rest of ingredients, besides butter. Knead for about 15 minutes or until smooth and elastic. After 7-10 minutes of kneading, gradually add butter. Cover with kitchen towel and let it sit someeher warm for about 60 to 90 minutes.
Divide into nine buns. Roll each bun and fold the edges, roll, creating a japanese roll (see the video). Place on a baking tray lined iwth baking paper and let them rise for additional 40 to 50 minutes. Brush with some milk, cream or eggwash. Bake in 180 C for about 20 to 25 minutes. Immediately smear the top of each bun with some butter. Enjoy:)
