I understanhd you cook this stuff in the backyard. My question is this...how do you safely carry meat and other fooods from spoiling before you cook them on a hike/backpacking trip?
I cook SOME of them in the backyard, I cook a lot of them in the woods also. If I take perishables into the woods I try to cook it within about 4-5 hours of when I take it out of the fridge. Most of the time in the woods I use non perishable stuff...
NEVER EVER test the temp's of water put on to boil with your finger!!! YIKES!!! Otherwise, your video was great and I'll certainly add spaghetti and meat sauce to my camping menus! Thanks and safe camping to you and yours!
Hey there! Scout for Life sent me over and am I glad he did! This looks awesome! I just picked up the ingredients to make a backwoods clam chowder in the next few days. I have a group friends who give me a hard time for my strong dislike of pre-packaged dehydrated meals. They do have their place, but I believe you can make a lot better meal and cheaper too. I really like the Tuesday concept. Subbed and will check out out your other videos. I am also in the process of making my own wood gasifier stove. I discovered something very interesting when checking things out and plan on making a video about it real soon. Keep on cooking!
Thanks man. I am trying to give everyone some fresh ideas that are practical to make on the trail other than the same old same old ramen noodles of mountain house stuff. Cant wait to see your next vid..
FLBoyS, Brother Matt, awesome video man......Love it. A little spill never hurt anyone. Busy trying to plan meals for our 10 day canoe trip (with no supply drops), add I am Gluten intolerant and that makes it more interesting. But we know for sure fish is on the menu for a few meals. Great video Matt, keep the camera rolling brother.
Oh I know, I use all Gluten free stuff here. Corn pasta 100 times better then rice pasta. Makes meals tough when traveling. Yet to find a good gluten free bed other then corn bread Matt. Again great video man. Have to get down to Brooksville again soon, have friends down there.
The trick to hiking spaghetti is not to use spaghetti. Straight to Wok noodles come in vacuum packed portions that need a couple of minutes steaming or just adding to the hot sauce . Noodles and Pasta are pretty much the same thing anyway . I can cook a portion of noodle/pasta with tuna and pesto , and a cup of coffee from a single esbit cube .
It'd be nice if you could get spaghetti in single serving packs. I just seen today at Dollar Tree they have 8oz. pack of ground beef, almost got some but didn't, maybe later. I love to see bloopers, makes me not feel so bad when I make them. Great video.
Good stuff. Your spaghetti incident is pretty much what happens sometimes..somewhere in the videos I make. It is tough to pay attention to the camera and what you are supposed to be doing at the same time. Anyway, now I am hungry for spaghetti.
you know what it means when ya run around cooking spaghetti in a canteen cup like a hobo? it means that ya have a little hobo in ya! thumbed it up & thx!
angela wilmot I use any combination of hard salami, spam (spiced porcupine and armadillo meat?) , turkey, pork, hamburger, chicken...I guess you could even use textured vegetable protein as well...anything works! Lately it’s been dehydrated canned chicken...I always add garlic, onions, salt/pepper, red pepper flakes and basil to the sauce. I add Parmesan cheese too. Just because it’s in a canteen cup doesn’t mean it has to be noodles and ketchup and a bland, unseasoned sauce. If you have a dehydrator, you can make tomato sauce into fruit leather...it rehydrates just fine with a few tablespoons of hot water. There are SO many possibilities to improve the sauce! Dine well and enjoy the process, don’t just “survive”. Bon Appetite.
I am getting kind of addicted to your videos...did you use 1 Rothco and 1 USGI cup in this one or were they both the same type? I wound up getting a great deal on a brand new USGI canteen stove locally but the cups are a different story. I am considering transitioning out of the Stansport cook kit which has been good for car camping to a canteen cup and /or USGI mess kit based system for backpacking. Incidentally, the USGI stove should also fit under my Stansports! I asked the question I guess because I have considered switching maybe to one of the foreign brands to save some money before I get too deeply invested into building my kit. Your thoughts on that subject? I have had a USGI mess kit for many years, someone who loves me kept "encouraging" me to get the Stansport set. If my guess was right you have both and can give me your impressions of both. Thanks for reading this novel !
Lol...Thanks! You are correct, I did use my Rothco cup as well as my GI cup. They are pretty much the same except that the rothco cup has a lid that snaps on well. A lid is nice but not absolutely necessary. The Rothco is stainless steel and is now all cooked in and is my go-to cup. You should try a few different types for your kit and use what works best for you. I have a few different things also, such as the Stanley Adventure series, that work well also. You can get either of these very inexpensively, see my links below in the video description. Thanks for getting addicted to me...lol
hey Matt. I really enjoy your videos my friend. i live in Clearwater. i'm trying to learn as much as possible about survival in Florida. do you know of any other RUclips channels that have good content on Florida survival.
Very good idea, Thank you very much
thanks! It works well...
Your sketti move looked like a a game of Kerplunk! gone bad! LOL
Lol...that was definitely a party foul. I don't edit out my mistakes either...
Also the spaghetti noodles (or any pasta) work as great fire starters if it’s damp.
I have never tried that
Great video, another great meal. Even with a little comic relief.
Haha, I dropped the spaghetti...lol
6:30 ...and 3, 2, 1 .....LOL Matt your so funny ! thank God you we weren't holding a sharp knife :D
Yeah, I dropped the spaghetti...lol
You should....
1st, NO GARLIC????? 2nd, as to the spagetti spill, John Lennon said, "Life is what happens while you make other plans." Nuff said
Lol...I forgot the garlic. At least I didnt edit out the mishao...
👍😁🇺🇸
thanks!

I'm not one for spaghetti , But my girls will love this . Thanks for the ideal . Awesome video.
It was a good change of pace and easy to do on the trail. More ideas to come....
Look forward to what you come up with
No offense but you should've started your noodles first cuz of time and then transfer the noodles to the sauce cup cuz of less cleanup
It works though...
NEVER EVER test the temp's of water put on to boil with your finger!!! YIKES!!! Otherwise, your video was great and I'll certainly add spaghetti and meat sauce to my camping menus! Thanks and safe camping to you and yours!
What can you can't cook in the canteen cup
You can do just about anything...

Thanks man. That was almost a spaghetti disaster...lol. They make gluten free spaghetti also so you may want to check that out...

Enjoy your canteen cup Tuesdays. Maybe you can start USGI mess kit Thursdays, I'll be the first to give you a thumbs up. Keep up gr8 videos.
Thanks! I was doing Mess Kit Mondays for a while but it kind of died out. I may start it back up again...

Nice, I gotta look for some of those...
Google " Amoy Straight to Wok noodles " . I'm pretty sure other brands are available .
I found something very similar at the local store, gonna try them out soon...
LOL i love SPAGHETTI and iv never made it in the woods, well in going to fix that lol nice vid brother
Thanks man. Very easy to do also and it made A LOT...lol

It would be. The closest thing that I have found is the pot sized stuff which works pretty good...
Good stuff. Your spaghetti incident is pretty much what happens sometimes..somewhere in the videos I make. It is tough to pay attention to the camera and what you are supposed to be doing at the same time. Anyway, now I am hungry for spaghetti.
MorningWood lol you got that right. Tough do shoot the video and cook at the same time...
Especially for me. I am usually pretty ....um.. hydrated when I make a cooking video.
you know what it means when ya run around cooking spaghetti in a canteen cup like a hobo? it means that ya have a little hobo in ya! thumbed it up & thx!
You got that right!!
What tip of meats can I use in spaghetti to get some protein
I usually use hamburger but you could use any cut of meat really...
angela wilmot I use any combination of hard salami, spam (spiced porcupine and armadillo meat?) , turkey, pork, hamburger, chicken...I guess you could even use textured vegetable protein as well...anything works! Good video! I subbed.
Thanks man, right back at ya...

Yes there are quite a few. Hike with Mike, John Sherwood, Florida Girl Adventures to name a few....
