  • In this 5th episode the SP80 Explained series, Charles answers some of your concerns about using kite sails for our record attempt ! Thanks to the kite sail, SP80 boat will be able to reach 80 knots (150 km/h) and thus break the World Sailing Speed Record. More information on: www.sp80.ch

    Super projet, et incroyable travail de R&D! Et pour les fans d'aviation il a un petit air de Lockheed SR 71 Blackbird non?😁 Un immense bravo à toute l'équipe !

    Thinking 🤔 the further the kite is from the boat the better. If it were to close it could Lift the boat out of the water if the Paracord angle to the top 🔝 highest edge of the sail is to steep of an angle would equal Disaster

      @sp80record  3 года назад +4

      Good thinking! :)
      During the run and to be the most efficient, the kite must be as low as possible to avoid creating too much vertical force and lifting the boat or slowing it down. In addition to the optimal angle calculated for our boat, there is therefore a compromise to be found between: kite size, line length and size/shape of the foil that attaches us to the water.

      @@sp80record I don't use foil, after a certain speed the water stops making friction and the kayak slides on the water. But at your speed it might be dangerous not to use foil.

      @@sp80record exactely, the kite must be low and stady, but usually the lower wind close to the water, are not so strong.

    What are the advantages of flying a flexible wing over a rigid wing? Im guessing its too late to run a rigid leading edge.
    what kind of lift to drag ratios do you expect from the kite?

    • @sp80record
      @sp80record  3 года назад

      Thank you for your message ! :) One of the advantage of the flexible wing is that it can be more easily produced and tested at the beginning. But nothing is too late, we are already validating different kite configurations!

      @@sp80record In my experience a flexible wing would be harder to fly, after falling in the water. This is a disadvantage, but it has some advandages too. A power kite with a flexible wing needs less square meters than a rigid wing.

    Hi, why are you puting the rope of the kite on the tail of your boat.
    Are you sure it won´t pull your boat backwords?

    • @sp80record

      Hi @ressanopapanoa !
      The kite is attached at the rear of the boat for stability matters.
      In fact, it might not seem very intuitive but if you put the kite in front, the boat is not stable at all, it’s something we learned by watching Paul Larsen’s first boat designed to break the world sailing speed record: ruclips.net/video/VueubuoNQ-c/видео.html

      @@sp80record Hi! In my kayak for 2 persons, if i seat in the back seat, the power of the kite will turn the kayak and make the kayak move backwards. This happens in the start, because if I am already mooving, I can change my seat to go behind without any problem. But I have better performance when i am in the meadle. Another problem that you might have if you put the rope behind, is that the front of the boat might loose contact with the water, doesn´t it? It happens on my kayak, but it is a very different boat at a very different speed.

      @@sp80record i watched your video, i practice windsurf and kite kayaking. The behavior of a sail is completely diferent from a kite. in my kayak i can improve the speed moving myself more to the front or more to the back, depending on wind direction and caracteristics. maybe you should think about a moving point to attach your ropes to the boat. i apologise about my questions, but i have more then 20 years of experience on kite kayaking, and i would realy loved that you achieve the word record.

      You have a good point!
      The arm on which the kite is attached can move back and forth => so the pull point of the kite can move :)

    have you tried using an inflatable kite?

    • @sp80record

      Inflatable kites will be used for the first tests. Once the boat is optimised, we'll use ram-air kites for the record runs 🙌🏻
