I think he stiffened his fingers and thumb to replicate a pic in that area. Like you said he almost never uses pics on his acoustics, or electric guitar. I've seen him play bass with just fingers as well. His fingers have to have some serious built in calluses. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't do finger tip push ups to keep them strong.

8:25, yeah, there's no pick visible at 2m30s in the video when he finishes the solo and opens his hand. He looks to be playing with his index finger and thumb pinched together, plus his middle finger and ring finger to pluck from the bottom.
