Got one of these recently, after watching this and some other G&L JB demos, its a great sounding bass. Bit heavier than the Squier CV jazz bass line, but the pickups are amazing, no need for an upgrade. Playing with the neck pup alone even gives it a real precision bass sound as well! Bonus!
Great demo! One potential update - the demo says this bass has a swamp ash body; however, the current production has a poplar body with a thin veneer of ash on top for aesthetics in the sunburst. I don't know if the JB tribute has always been that way, but that is the current production. All the rest is unchanged. My brand new G&L tribute JB sounds the same as yours to my ears - poplar or not! My first bass by the way... very well balanced and weighs less than some of my guitars.
@@TheShotsiiSandberg California TT Bass the World signature. Granted, it's in a completely different price bracket and the G&L sounds great for the money.
Bought that bass one month ago and it sounds really great. The pickups have a lot of output and if you play the neck pickup alone you sometimes have to cut the volume a little bit. Manufacturing quality is good overall except of 2 pickguard screws that didn’t fit properly and the bridge is already completely at the lowest adjustment point so you can’t adjust the strings lower. I use DR Highbeams and they have a low tension, so I could put the saddles a little higher. The finish ist very good and the neck is great too, so the frets. The main complaint about this instrument is the weight. Ist a 5.4 kg bass and you better have a really good strap or play while sitting. Pro: Sound and finish Con: Weight 4 of 5 Stars
@@Tim8tei I have no clue. It has a swamp ash body and the wood grain is seen though the finish. They probably choose the bodies with a nice grain for this bass and don’t care about the weight of it
@@flusenbart If your saddles are bottomed and your action is still high, you could shim the neck pocket which will bottom the strings against the frets. Then you raise the strings with the saddles. Lots of basses in the low to mid price range need this. It's a great bass. I got the SB2 instead because it was lighter
@@bobt5778 Hey Bob. Thank you for your advice. I have already seen a video about the shim but I’m fine with a little adjustments now. I like the sound of the SB2 too
really nice playing! good tone and nice rgroove. i saw you in another review with the ashdown grail 4 string bass. What would you prefer? Thx in advance. Chris
I've got this and the Mexican (Player Series) Fender precision. I prefer the satin finish on the Fender's neck but honestly, beyond that, the G&L feels and sounds like the more premium instrument to me!
Maybe G&L did it on purpose so that its to distinguish between the Tribute and their USA JB..but I feel that having one less block inlay right after the nut, on their Tribute JB, just look off to me..It stopped me from getting one..really hope G&L fix it or something..
I feel the opposite. I love block inlays because they give off that 70's vibe, but going all the way up to the nut makes it look crowded. This way seems more elegant to me. I've had the Squier and you'll be replacing the pick ups, tuners and the bridge to come anywhere near the quality of this bass. I have the Vintera 70's jazz bass and am seriously considering going to this G&L tribute, all the specs are very close.
I just bought this bass based on the sound of the video and it's not even close. The bass does not in any way sound like this guys bass. Especially the E string being slapped. Sounds killer in the video but nothing similar in real life. Sounds like ass. Sounds like a $99 bass. Buyer beware. This will be going back to guitar center tomorrow! This is not even a real musical instrument in my opinion. Made for bedroom players. I don't think you'll ever see one of these on a stage anywhere.

Check out the demo starting at 2:41
It's as close as you will get to a P-bass sound on any Jazz Bass out there.
Sounds frickin’ amazing!

The tone on these basses is special
That was an awesome demo. Great playing, clear recording.
I’m buying this on Friday. Looks and sounds fantastic. Great playing.
How are getting on with it? I'm waiting for mine to arrive!!
I’ve played this through every speaker I own and this is the third best sounding jazz bass I’ve heard which is hella impressive for its price
Dude what's better than this? Just curious

Wow ! That was a great demo ! Can you please share the signal chain ( preamps / pedals if any ) and how was it recorded? Thanks !
Great presentation. Great playing.

Why is it so heavy? I just read a review that mentioned the same thing.

G&L's are so underrated!
Great demo! I almost bought one a few days ago... now I wish I did!
Sounds and looks great!! What about a shootout between this bass and Sire V5 4 string?
It sounds fantastic, thanks for the video

what the sound chain do you use ? what after guitar in sound?

I totally agree. It's a great sounding bass but, that one aesthetic choice has me leaning toward the Squier CV.
I *hate* that! Not gonna lie, I got some block inlay stickers and put that first one on there! I've no regrets!

Great playing and bass but before buying one online check the weight as mine is 11.2 lb`s!
What the neck feel like has it rolled edges? And what kind of truss rod is fitted thankyou
Tab, please! Do you teach lessons? Serious inquiry.
Great bass. What strings are you using?
Stock strings! :-)
