    I just started doing a waterpump on the twin to your motor. Having done hundreds of pump jobs I dove right in. Everything went fine until I tried to extract the lower unit. While pulling I could feel the spring but was unfamiliar with this model. First I went to a parts cattalog to see what was up under the powerhead that could be causing this condition. Second I went to RUclips and found this video. You did such an excellent job showing and describing I immediately subscribed. If it weren't for this video I would have removed the power head next. Unlike your motor, this motor has very, very low hours in fresh water. I will consult with my customer about freshening the seals under the powerhead and recomend this video. Thanks for a great video. Dave

    I doubt this will get a response but hey. I'm new to this whole ordeal and recently purchased a boat with the 1964 version. Everything seemed to be great with the motor but it was not pumping water. Almost all of the seals in this video on my engine were shot. And even the seal around the line to the water pump was shot. I'm pretty confident this is why I was not getting water. But would this explain what I feel is excessive blow over of oil and gas? That was coming from the weeping hole for the pump nothing extreme but it was evident

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  Год назад

      That probably unburnt fuel/oils slowing dripping out.
      Its common after use to find a little puddle of black oil under the motor later.

    Sir Brandon. Thank good video. I have a Johnson 6hp 1977
    Question: How can we explain that the roll pin, spinning fast with the driveshaft, does not tear or scratch other parts. No oil or grease in the area.

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  3 года назад +1

      it grabs the lower plate, spring, and washer.
      All of it slips.
      And, it does sometimes tear up parts. I believe the goal is to tear up the cork washer.

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  4 года назад

      its pushes the lower crankshaft seal into position, and keep retention on it.
      Quite an important pin.

      @ollyboo Год назад

      Did you ever get it off? Mine is having the same problem

    • @ChippyOZ
      @ChippyOZ Год назад

      @@ollyboo Got it off eventually after trying everything else I could think of. Laid down the motor horizontally with the prop facing up and soaked for days between the prop shaft and prop with rust breaker spray. Used a butane torch to really heat up the shaft to get the liquid boiling to help penetration. Lifted up the motor slightly by holding onto the prop and hit the shaft end square on with a hammer a bit at a time not overdoing it but it moved a little bit each time. Kept spraying and hitting until the shaft end was flush with prop. Then got someone to help and hold the motor up still by the prop while I used a drift to keep hitting at the shaft. Eventually the prop came off and it was corrosion that had been the problem. Cleaned up the shaft and inside of the prop, put in a new shear pin (the one in it still looked OK though), lubricated and reassembled. Don't know if this was the correct way to get it off - I'm not a mechanic, don't know if any damage was done, haven't taken it back out on the water (it's a second motor) and haven't done a gear case pressure test in case any of the seals were damaged. Will check one of these days...

    My all time favorite motor! Although the reed petals seem to wear out and start to leak after 40 years of every summer use.
    A question: do you recon that engine would work with glassfiber reed valve petals? Is there enough vacuum to open stiffer petals?
    Where i live, new petals are pretty hard to get without ridiculous postage costs. So i'm thinking about a diy way from a sheet of reed petal glassfiber.
