Saw two this morning, lashed up in a light power move, passing through downtown Pittsburgh on their way to Conway Yard. I said out loud "what the heck are those?" Seeing them the day they were revealed...they're very cool!

+Metra MP36 407 Despite all what you are saying they are not exactly green technology........they are still burning fossil fuels.
So in the long shot it's not sustainable, and definately not enviromentally friendly.....yeah railroads are by far more ecological than road transport (half more than 50% of the traffic and only roughly 25% of the CO2 emissions in the US) but it's still burning Diesel fuel.....thus still pumping out more emissions than an electro.
If the Switch was made to electrification, there could be a lot more CO2, Nitrous Oxide and soot emissions be saved.
And that would really improve air quality........

Looks like our country's trains are starting to catch up a bit with trains in other countries, being more eco-friendly. First, I saw the Grand Canyon Railway begin regularly fueling one of their steam locomotives with waste vegetable oil, and now I see the Norfolk Southern give classic locomotives modern technology to make them more eco-friendly. These are good signs. :)

The other reply is wrong. It started before this actual manifestation when NS sought to take its tiny fleet of GP 59's which NS was the only purchaser of (2500hp) and began rebuilding those specifically for the Chicago area in a joint arrangement that upgraded them to tier 2 and also with microprocessor control and engine management. Also having a nominal fleet of GP 50's (3500 hp), NS began seeking out if these also could be involved in a similar smog reduction program.
The first engines became ECOGP22's (eco rated 2200 hp) and that was largely obtained by removing the turbo chargers and reworking the entire exhaust system for a re-burn for emission reduction.
The GP 50's however timed really well with EMD releasing an actual tier 3 - 710 prime mover which was/is largely applied to passenger locomotives but also made for a perfect fit into these.
OF NOTE: NO NS GP 50 WAS ORIGINALLY LOW NOSE. All new ADMIRAL cabs were fashioned and have a distinct 71 inch nose. Also in cab are -3 rated electronics and microprocessor engine management systems as well as a much updated and improved electrical cabinet.
These were down rated BUT THE ALTERNATORS WERE UPGRADED SUBSTANTIALLY TO A D87 AND THE TRACTION MOTORS ALSO A NEW VERSION TO MATCH. With those 2 items not only did these all become universal across the system as far as those 2 parts, but also it created a much greater traction with less HP.
This 2nd incarnation of NS rebuild is known as ECO GP33 (3300 HP down from 3500).
Also of note: IN BOTH CASES these are all MATED and in several cases are mated with a CALF aka SLUG. You can determine if its a POWER/POWER set or a POWER/SLUG set simply by looking for the joining and ALL THE CABLES or not.
NOTE: The power/slug sets are ALL yard assigned and at hump locations. Inman yard Atlanta has some of these. The powered sets are all on the road in short haul switching assignments around several major cities = ATLANTA + CHICAGO. NS has maybe 50 GP 50's and so far 26 have been in this program. ROME GA also has 1 set that handles ALL the local jobs there. I see a set running out of Forest Park to the East Point yard almost daily.
According to trains magazine the amount of emissions in each rendition is severely reduced. In the Eco GP 22 its maybe 50% (or less) of an original GP40-2 and in the case of the ECO GP 33 its maybe 20%.
OF NOTE: FLARED RADIATORS VERY SD 45 ISH.
One major change in these is the way the cooling system works and in some cases it works in REVERSE. In that case it acts as a hot water reservoir that PRE WARMS THE FUEL FOR COLD START. These engines are designed to be shut off DAILY which is a major alteration for any EMD product and why NS opted out of just buying these as EMD rebuilds and chose to redesign and build them in house. Any guy who ever has been faced with cold starting an EMD locomotive, well you can loose your religion fast.
The other side of the cooling system is that is is ITEM SEPARATED. There is now a radiator on each side assigned to specific cooling tasks for a DUAL COOL system.
Finally, NS did all this on its own initiative without being harassed into it. There are also several other NS rebuild projects going on and 1 major one is taking 70 series engines and rebuilding them with ALL NEW SELF STEERING TRUCKS, + changing them into AC traction.
These are marked by an ELECTRIC BLUE added to the paint scheme. Several were done at Chattanooga Shops and others are at Juniata each with its own version of the electric blue. Juniata has a HORSE MANE feature added into the paint scheme on the sides while the Chattanooga ones have a much greater blue addition.
THIS IS SO FREAKIN CRAZY AND SO OLD SCHOOL! Railroads in the 40s & 50s did this type stuff in its divisional engine houses. Santa Fe had multiple versions of BLUE BONNETS which many think were standard but OH NO and even more several divisions had there own YELLOW BONNET schemes. SR gave division shop foremen a certain leeway as well and SEVERAL CLASSES OF BIG STEAM ON SR WAS PAINTED IN VIRGINIA GREEN. SO TVRM be damned, 4501 needs to be green,
Just sayin. Hope all this serves to explain some things.

Daniele Pelaia, yard. They don't have enough power for the long hauls which means you need more engines which equals the same or more emissions out of the eco friendly ones because there is more. Like you may need 6 while a long hauler can do 4.

I think it's funny that they're bragging about committing to a cleaner environment, when the evidence that their trains leak their contents is in plain sight when they show the locomotives. Why didn't you get a few men or even boys to go scoop up as much of that crap as possible before the big photo shoot ? Even a pickup truck with a hefty generator and a bunch of shop-vac's and long extension cords would have been great. Or rent a vac-truck and just suck it all up....

  • @emdmanSpaziani

Quit the bullshitting and tell us about the locomotives themselves, what did you do to reduce emissions etc ? looks like all you did was rebuild a bunch of engines in to slug sets, slug set are nice but they have limitations. we use them on CSX and while they are handy you can not separate them to do fancy switching moves and some of the slugs do not get enough power from the mother unit to properly run the heaters.

These are Yard/local locomotives, And they are not Vastly less powerful, They are 3000 HP compared to 4400 HP on the Mainline locos, Which means you are not using the big locos for operations that do not require them. Which means you save a lot of fuel.
