When the letter says she was gasping for air and trying to say his name, I think he's describing what happened when he strangled her. Embedded confession.

Brian was jealous of Gabby. She was beautiful, popular & more talented than he. She was a better artist & had a real chance at becoming a successful social media influencer. That's why he called it "her little blog."
I'd be willing to bet that she didn't suffer anxiety until she met him.

What stands out to me, is how Brian painted himself to be the hero who failed trying to save Gabby, then rushed home to save James & TJ from murdering him and having to spend time in jail. What a great guy who would even take his own life to satisfy their "misguided" lust for revenge. But of course, it would be done on his terms, not theirs, not the justice systems, and with him getting the final word. A desperate attempt at one final jab before the prosecution had a chance to blow holes in his ridiculous story and destroy his credibility. Something a narcissistic liar would rather die than to lose.

  • @pumibel1720
    @pumibel1720 2 года назад +32

He is describing his act of strangling and beating her to death, but he reframes it as an accident, exposure to the elements and a mercy killing. How narcissistic do you have to be to lie in your suicide note? He couldn't stand the idea of everyone knowing his guilt, and he figures this will work because we are all a bunch of dummies compared to him.

  • @susan9630
    @susan9630 2 года назад +37

They DID have enough to arrest him. They ignored the fact that what they fought over was him taking her phone from her. When you take property from someone by force, that is called ROBBERY and it is a felony.
He told them he took her phone because he didn't have one. That was a lie, but had it been true it is not an excuse and of course taking the phone was for control, which is a big part of DV.
I was trained in 19 freaking 88 that where you have a hysterical woman and a calm man talking about controlling or "caring for" her, you are likely looking at DV.
Their interview techniques were awful, they never got the actual story. I'm not saying their intentions were bad, but as retired LE, watching that video was very hard.

I just watched the police stop video again, and something struck me. What Brian does (and also did in his notebook) is that he admits to forgivable things.. "sorry I hit the curb, sorry I was going too fast.. blah blah" He makes himself so "truthful" by apologizing for little things that the police missed the point that he was a danger to Gabbie.
In the note, he does the same thing.. "I'm sorry that I didn't light the fire first, I'm sorry that I ended her suffering, blah blah" but he forgets to mention that she was dying because he had just strangled her and she was gasping for air.. That she fell into the creek because she was trying to run away from him.
But he's sorry and he hopes the animals eat his body so that the Petito's can be happy.
Come to think of it, it is EXACTLY what Roberta and Chris are doing as well. It is 'understandable' that they want to protect their son by not speaking.. but the bigger picture, that they left the Petitos in the dark, knew exactly where Brian's body was, sent a note through their attorney saying that they hoped the Petitos find their daughter knowing full well she was dead.. that, they ignore.
Confess to the smaller crimes and you can get away with murder.

The van belonged to Gabby, which might be a source of dented pride to Laundrie. She was also the one doing all the work to gather followers to make the blog successful. I'm sure she attracted more 'positive' /complimentary attention and popularity than he did. I'm assuming Laundrie could compare her success path to his and developed resentment towards her for these things. Perhaps to the point where he was constantly low-level angry and critical of her and somewhat emasculated. What better dominance over her than to take her life.

The crossing of the stream sounds like the point of no return (rubicon) He wants to save her, but can't reach the other side. Then, she forbids! him to cross. So she made him do it, she gave him no other choice.
The last lines seem very snide to me. Envisioning others would love to kill him. The torn apart by animals is a jab: a more flowery way of saying "I guess I'll just go kill myself". And as a last act to her, he "sweetly" asks others to pick up his littering, like he littered HER.

Thank you Peter, great as always!
To the note - it was 8 pages, but not his usual notebook, a new one with only this writing. Handwriting on the first page is chaotic, the others are very orderly.
He went home after killing her, there is no way the parents didn't know what happened. Also, they must have realized his mental state. Still, they let him go into the nature preserve. One day later they collected the car. I believe one or two days later they reported a gun missing. Finally the parents found him, not LE. Notebook well preserved in dry-bag.
I believe they knew that he was going to kill himself, and it could very well be that they prompted him to write the note, to provide an "explanation" that would make him look good, and appeal to the public to leave his parents alone.
I'm not 100% sold that he wrote it alone, or at least was asked by parents to write it to make themselves look better.

The interview with the Zav Girl, they never mentioned Brian Laundrie's dark drawings. He had an art book where he had it full with drawings of his interpretation of Hellboy. His drawings were all with knives, blood, and killing. He even portrayed himself and Gabby as both dark individuals with knives either after a killing or on their way to one. They were weirdly dark ghory strange warped looking entities. They would portray themselves as very dark saviors who murder.
Brian also after killing Gabby, Brian flew home immediately and with his dad emptied the rental storage that Brian had. They saved few items of Gabby's clothing, but it wasn't much. It was portrayed as an emergency to shut the storage rental down in order to not pay the next payment. Then Brian flew back to where Gabbywas. His flights cost more and I could never understand that logic and not just wait until they got back which was cheaper.

"Begging for an end to her pain" either means she was asking him to stop beating her up (allegedly), or was choking out something to make him stop strangling her (allegedly). Killing her was not the mercy he claimed it was, and claimed she asked for: she was pleading *FOR mercy from HIM*.
I can well believe he did believe "she was asking for it," but only in the sense of an (alleged) abuser self-congratulating and self-soothing.
I feel so bad for her. She was also totally failed by the last people who could have intervened on her behalf (LE). I would be totally unsurprised if he escalated significantly once he had her physically away from her support network and could also control her contact.
    🎉Allegedly.🎉
In 🎉my opinion🎉, the Laundries were complicit. That whole "look here" thing was cause they wanted him back so they could give HIM a proper burial and kept having to wait till law enforcement "found him;" THEY got tired of waiting and "looked in the right spot by chance." What a fantastic coincidence. I'm sure it's "only" cause they knew some of his favorite spots in the woods, and not where he intended to go. What with picking up his car from the parking lot and all. Just a coincidence. 🎉Allegedly.🎉
But (continued from my opinion, see above) they didn't have the grace or mercy to help GABBY's family get their daughter back for the same thing. What's crucial for the gander to get wasn't worth giving to the goose.
In 🎉my opinion🎉, Gabby deserved SO much better than that piece of trash, and that includes certain members of his family. Again, my opinion.
Shout out to their legal representatives, if any of y'all are see my comment while retained, I know you're only doing a job. I would say you can't pick your clients, but you kinda can, since they're not at present entitled to free representation on this one.

Peter, thank you for your thoughtful and valuable analysis, as always.
I had to reach out and thank you for recognizing the perceived difference in value of the Laundrie children by the parents! This is something I’ve noticed since we were first introduced to Cassie as it was always so clear to me he was the golden child and it broke my heart for her, as a scapegoat child myself. I’ve never heard anyone else pick up on that before and I’m not at all surprised that you’re the one who identified that. It seems obvious he led a privileged and very different life than Cassie, he was part of the inner circle and it broke my heart to see her dragged by the media. It was always clear to me she really had no idea what was going on with them and had been kept on the periphery.
I sincerely hope she frees herself from the family, or maybe she’ll now enjoy the benefit of 100% of their love as she’s always deserved. I was a rare case of a golden child turned scapegoat later in life resulting in my disinheritance and estrangement from what was left of my family when my Dad passed unexpectedly from the virus in 2020. Sadly we had reconciled, but he hadn’t updated his Will. I know I’m not the only one negatively impacted by the pandemic so I’ll leave it there.
Thanks again for your analysis. You are brilliant and I enjoy your analyses always!

The thing I have a hard time understanding, is when people say abusers can pick a perfect victim out of a line. But what is the difference between a victim and a nice, decent person. If Gabby had met a nice guy, she had the character traits to be a wonderful partner. A lot of the people I know who were abused, were really well-balanced, good people before their abusive relationship. Sometimes, I think it is just bad timing and the confusion of trying to make something work because it's hard to believe that people this selfish exist in the world (the "if only I could get through to them we could be happy" scenario). Also being raised to be a well-adjusted person in itself makes you a mark in this messed up society.

As @daniellebois hints to, is it a metaphor? Because if so, in his version, BL wants to "Cross the Rubicon" and go back to the van (ie, get "back on track" on the road in their BL-controlled life together).
But wait, she "fell" into the water. That was her own fault! Maybe she finally said no -- to crossing the creek, to staying with him .... and fell out of favor.
Water can symbolize emotions in fiction/ dream analysis. BL sets his whole heroic scene around (this) emotional territory.
IRL, for her, maybe she wanted to go home & to leave him. IRL, for him, he was losing control of her. Recall, he says "We were both afraid the fire would go out....by morning". (The fire was no longer burning). Recall a few days before they were in a hot place (his anger?) and now they were in a cold place (cold shoulder from Gabby?)...which turned to freezing!!.
He couldn't change her "status" in their new situation. So he took control-- he ended it. And left her there. Yes, he had the last word. Unreal.

I believe Brian made, what I thought was, a strange post on Facebook prior to these events. I think it was around the time of their engagement. I believe he posted something along the lines of “how much he loves Gabby and how he would be happy to die just so he could experience all their time together again”. Does anyone know the exact post and date? I am curious because he wrote something very similar in the suicide note.
My theory after reviewing the letter was that they were washing off in the stream, possibly following an argument about dirt. In the van and that he struck out. When they encountered LE earlier on their trip, Gabby or Brian mentioned that the argument began in the morning, when Brian would not clean the dirt off his feet before getting in the van, and it continued to escalate. She was shaking and gasping for breath on the body cam footage when she was crying. She was in emotional pain. I believe boots were found at the crime scene near or next to gabby too, which also made me think they were originally paddling in the water. I originally thought he just snapped, but you have me convinced that he more than likely thought or fantasized about a murder/ suicide.

I have been waiting for Peters analysis because Peter is the best! I then found Steve Johnston and enjoy his analysis too. Great team guys thank you.
The police had previously dealt with their fight after it was reported that Brian had been hitting Gabby but knowing she had to continue the journey she took the blame saying she had OCD. Gabby was upset that day because she had cleaned the van and Brian had said to the police that he had made a mess in the van. Gabbys parents said she liked things clean and tidy but had never been diagnosed with OCD. Living in a small van would demand tidy clean order. A little claustrophobic perhaps?
In this letter Brian refers to Gabby not liking litter. Perhaps another argument started about his untidy attitude. He told the police their fight on the day of the traffic stop was about his bringing dirt from his shoes into the van that Gabby had cleaned.
Gabby came across as beautiful and charismatic. Brian apparently did need medication for some type of personality disorder. He likely enjoyed the attention and fame Gabby was bringing to his life with her popular online blog. Some say it’s possible he felt able to reduce his medication.
Barbara Butcher the forensic pathologist explained that Gabby had died by being throttled. Gabbys little bones in her throat were broken according to the autopsy. I sense she died slowly after being hit and throttled. Perhaps Brian is saying she fell to cover his tracks for her broken bones. He left her body, went home in her van, spent her $$$, cleared out their shared lock up and then returned. Perhaps he was hoping her body was a mere skeleton showing no bruises?
There is phone signal in the region of the creek. The creek is shallow water. He could have got help. The mush respected Brian Entin from News Nation went to the creek last week to test phone signals and water levels.
Did Gabby and Brian have ‘blazing’ fight that day when it was hot. Then on the way back to the van Gabbys little slender body didn’t withstand his blows? He had to finish her off to save himself.
Typical narcissist writing that journal ( self absorbed) not realising this journal is rubbing the salt in the wounds for Gabbys families and loved ones, her siblings and friends.
Gabby had been living with Brians family for approximately 2 years before this trip. They have behaved in a very cold hearted way towards their future daughter-in-law and her family.
    Absolutely heartbreaking.
PS. Brian shot himself in his left temple but was right handed from the autopsy report I listened to. How strange? Did he really shoot him self or did someone else do it?
    Xxxx

Peter came through - thanks. I will add my impression of BL’s childhood trauma; I paid attention to the father’s body language in earlier videos. He looked strong and tough, like a solid block and very removed. He looks Big, military-trained. I imagined that he had over disciplined his scrawny bookish son and was physically abusive when his boy preferred to read and draw instead of playing sports (i.e. being tough like dad). I think this was a lifelong conflict between father and son. Their deep seated anger towards each other and anger from BL to his mother for not protecting him from dad’s temper turned into HIS need to control a smaller weaker person like Gabby. (She’s so Thin). This may sound trite but BL effectively eliminated his own weakness, smallness and lack of control when he killed her.
What a hero……….He never saw Gabby as a real separate person - he used her as an extension of himself as a powerless victim. I suspect he’d known deep down that he’d have to end up killing her. Their whole trip devolved to a fatal resolution for them both; finally he was “in control” in his ability to eliminate his past & present self.
    P. S. I was with a man/child like this many years ago. I knew how screwed up his childhood was with a controlling irrational father. He acted and lived like BL. He charmed then brutalized weaker women. He damaged the women he had charmed but didn’t kill anyone. He deflected his rage by changing his personality and lifestyle and eventually turned it on himself via substances. His ability to survive around people and even entertain them kept him functioning until his 70’s. I credit his amazing stepmom.
