      @@OmaGhomrawi you even didn't see that zeiss has noticable distortion but 50 1.8 has none. Also zeiss has really strong chrommatic abberations, almost twice stronger than 50 1.8. The vinghetting on zeiss is also bad and never goes out.
      My point is if you make such kind of review, tell people that lens profile is always on, otherwise you lie how good the lens is while it's not.

    The 55mm is my favorite lens, it is sharp, with excellent contrast and built like a tank. I bought mine used for around $600.00 and will not change it for anything. The bokeh is excellent and gives kind of a 3D effect to the picture that I never got from my Canon or Nikon 50mms when I hade them.

      If you're talking about the ''micro-contrast'' ''3D pop'' aka. saturation and contrast light rendition of the lens, then yeah Zeiss makes some (not all, some) of the best 3D pop lenses out there. The only other manufacturers that manufactured as good or better ''micro-contrast'' lenses than Zeiss, are Contax, Hasselblad, Nikon, Voigtlander and Leica.
      As for Nikon specifically... If you look at all lenses ever made from early 1900's to 2022, only 37 lenses in total have really good to amazing ''micro-contrast'' (if you're interested, some woman on Flickr made a complete list of all these lenses few years back) and out of a list of 20 best lenses for ''micro-contrast'" rendition, 9 of them are Nikkor lenses from Nikon. I don't know which 50mm lenses you were using but the 50mm f1.4 AI S, the 50mm f2 AI S, the 55mm f1.2 AI S, the 58mm f1.2 Noct and the 58mm 1.4G, are all 50mm lenses that have more ''micro-contrast'' than any Zeiss lens ever made.
      If you want the absolute BEST ''3D Pop'' then take a look at: Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4, Zeiss Planar 85mm f1.4 T*, Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f1.4, Hasselblad Zeiss Planar T* CF 80mm f2.8, Zeiss Biogon T* 35mm f2, Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f1.4, Hasselblad XCD 80mm f1.9, Nikkor 58mm f1.2 Noct, Nikkor 55mm f1.2 AI S, Nikkor 105mm AF f2D, Nikkor 135mm DC AF f2D, Nikkor 50mm f2 AI S, Nikkor 400mm f2.8, Nikkor Micro 60mm f2.8D, Nikkor 500mm f4, Nikkor 600mm f4, Leica Summilux M 50mm f1.4, Leica APO Summicron M 90mm f2, Tokina 100mm f2.8 Macro, Takumar 50mm f1.4 and last but not least Rokinon 55mm f1.4.

    Just picked an A7RII, and I’m new to the Sony system, so I decided to go with a second hand Zeiss 55mm 1.8 which cost me 520€. Sure the 50mm is way more affordable, however, because of the contrast, sharpness, minimal flare, AF, rounder bokeh, build quality and the capability of taking advantage of the camera’s 42 mpixels I believe is enough for me to justify the extra money.

    I'm a regretful videographer who owns the 50 1.8. I rely on fast, smooth auto focus. All of my other sony primes, 85 1.8, 28 2 etc. all have a very fast and organic autofocus. The 50 1.8 has a breathing effect which is very jarring before locking focus. If you are shooting interviews and the person is even minutely,animated, this will be a huge deal breaker. I went ahead and bought to 55 1.8 so my multi cam cuts are seamless matches. The client will ask why the image is doing the "breathing" trust me. I suggest renting until you can buy the 55 for paid gigs.

I can afford to buy the Zeiss but I kept the 50mm for the way it renders colors and bokeh and it's light weight. And, it focuses fast enough for me when shooting video. Ha, Oma, sadly this comparison came too late for me- I bought the Zeiss 55 mm along with my Sony a7iii, knowing that the kit lens would disappoint me. Since then I managed to pick up the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and can honestly say that it is now my favourite lens and I hardly use the 55mm.

      Hey Chryseas, I bought many Sony Lenses the last couple months and I only kept the ones I'm happy with! Luckily I have some friends that own Sony Gear, and I had the chance to test different lenses as well.
      I currently own Zeiss 16-35 f4 // 70-200mm f4 // and 85mm f1.8. Tamron is a great option, but I'm still thinking about it, afraid to add more load in my backpack especially when my current lenses are doing the jobs properly at the moment.

      @@OmaGhomrawi I am not that disciplined and hence, I have quite a few lenses both aps-c ( for a6000 and then a6500) and full frame. I already had the 85 1.8 and the 70-200 f.4 ( bought used from a friend) but felt that I needed more of a walk around lens for the a7iii. I debated between the Tamron and the Sony 24-105 f.4 but the Tamron won on size , aperture, availability, and the price. It's a fantastic lens, works exactly like a native Sony lens and fits the camera very well. Oma, I have been considering the 16-35 f.4 as a wide angle FE lens to get next ( down the line!). Are you pleased with yours? Had you considered the 2.8 version instead?

      @OmaGhomrawi  6 лет назад

      @@chryseass.5143 For most of my work I don't need a wide f2.8 lens. I shoot f8 most of my time when doing Landscapes and Cityscapes. This is my strategy since was Canon user. On the other hand, f2.8 doesn't give bokeh and shallow depth of field at wide focal length.

    • @OmaGhomrawi
      @OmaGhomrawi  6 лет назад +1

      For me, I can recover the additional Stop by increasing the ISO. Our cameras are great in low light conditions.
      And as I tested Zeiss 16-35 f4 and Zeiss 27-70 f4, the major downside is the metal body is very sensitive to scratches. The paint peel could come off anytime without noticing why. A ring in your finger could peel the paint.
      I explained the problem in this video, and I came up with a solution for that as well, check it out: ruclips.net/video/HCz5Er2-WNI/видео.html

    I believe the big difference must be on the microcontrast both lenses deliver, nobody does this kind of test. I'm using some voigtlanders lenses on my a7iii and the images I'm getting are really beautiful. I'm waiting that zeiss and I will compare it with my voigt 50 mm 1.5 Nokton.

    Could it be cheaper? Yeah.
    Is it one of the sharpest lenses ever? Yeah.
    I had the 50mm sony for 2 weeks before I got the Zeiss. Returned the sony, kept the Zeiss.
    Being more expensive is not an argument for saying get the 50mm, that is the same as saying “don’t buy a Ferrari, buy a golf”.
    Tl;dr: the Zeiss is one of the best lenses ever made, the sony is a nifty fifty.

    • @OmaGhomrawi
      @OmaGhomrawi  6 лет назад

      Definitely, the Zeiss is significant, no doubt. But it's not a fifty nifty anymore because of its price range.

    As far as photography goes, the 55 isnt worth the cost over the 50mm. But when it comes to both, video and photo, the 55mm is definitely noticeably superior.

    You could also buy a Sigma MC-11 converter for $200 and add a Canon 50mm 1.8 STM lens for $100 and you get a lovely combination, quiet focusing with great picture quality. Better than the Sony 50mm and much cheaper than the Zeiss.
