The charango first appeared in Potosi. To trace the century, just find out when the Spanish Church was built, 15 to 16 century. The sirens on the corners are holding the charango. That gives you evidence as where and when the charango appeared.
That story was already disproven iCyborg. The part of that church in which the sirens are holding the lute was added much later and not part of the original church structure. You must remember that all that type of work was authorized from Lima which was the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. It was there in the Cathedral of Lima in archives where the records of construction can be found. Incidentally, a church in Chucuito, Puno Peru already had a similar sirens playing a lute sculpture 15 years before the the addition was made to the church in Potosi which then added the same type of sculpture. So if we are going by the logic that this sculpture is what determines where the Charango was born, then one would have to conclude that it originated in Peru, since the church in Chucuito, Puno Peru predates the sculpture that was later added to the church in Potosi. The truth of the matter though is that in neither case does that "prove" where the charango began, since there is no proof that the lute that the sirens are playing is actually a charango as we know it today. It could be any chordophone which was popular in that time period since we see even in countries where the Charango did not exist, similar sculptures around the same time period.
the charango is a PERUVIAN instrument, until 1825 bolivia wasnt a country, it was part of the peruvian territory and its was called alto peru, and the charango history goes back in time before 1825, so its a peruvian native instrument in all the senses.
