    I used to love Blockbuster! Our weekend revolves around our choices. I’d pick 2 movies, my wife would pick 1 and our son would pick a couple from the kids section. Few beers, a curry, and crisps/chips. That’s a perfect weekend right there. I was gutted when they shut their doors.

    I worked at the blockbuster corporate headquarters all the way until the end. I still have a stack of 100 new membership cards and a ton of other random branded giveaways. It was a lot of fun working at the office in downtown Dallas. They would bring by different actors that would stop by every cubicle to talk with us and sign movie posters.

      I worked as an Assistant Manager in a couple different stores, and it was always like corporate had no idea what actually went on in the stores with real customers. We would get paperwork or a so-called training video, watch it, and look at each other saying They think this is going to work in the stores? We did it anyway, as it was our job and the DM had to visit every few weeks. But even he would agree on some things saying once you go above a certain point in corporate, you have no idea what really goes on in the stores yet you are making decisions and policies for those stores. Just another reason why it failed.

    • @TheCalTexans
      @TheCalTexans Месяц назад +1

      @@DiamondVisionLEDThat is every major corporation. I worked in accounting. Not in operations but I have worked with plenty of other medium and large corporations. The mom and pops video store that we had in the block buster era was garbage. I remember they only had season 1 and 2 of Bones, when the series was up to season 5 or 6. The video store also sold liquor, I guess that's how they made their money.

      The movies were $100 because of Blockbuster. They would refuse to rent new movies if the Studios were selling them at a normal price. A lot of bittersweet nostalgia here. So many fond memories of growing up with Blockbuster weekends with my family. My sister and I were even allowed to pick out a video game most times. We so looked forward to it. There really isn't anything like it in modern society/culture. I feel it was a defining feature of my generation's (millennial) youth.
    Every once in a while, I'll get a random whiff of something plastic-y, and I'm instantly transported back to the Blockbuster store, which always smelled like the plastic movie cases. While it definitely brings back happy memories, it also hurts a little bit, to know that it's an era past, something I can never go back to. Time is strange...

    People don't remember how things used to be. I applied at Blockbuster back in 1995? I'm a guy and I had near waist-length long hair which took years to grow out. It was well kept. The interviewer asked me if I would be willing to cut my hair to work there. I was a bit blindsided with the request and had to ponder it before replying with either "I don't know" or a straight "No". Needless to say I never received a call back. Silly too because I saw a male employee with long hair at a more centrally located downtown location around that same time frame.
    I then got a job at a grocery store and guess what? They made me put my hair back and tuck it underneath the back of my dress shirt. I no longer have long hair, but I'm glad times have changed in that regard.

    Awesome little exhibit there! There are some great deals to be had there if those movies are truly just 5 dollars each, especially sealed VHS and some slipcovers.

    As a former Blockbuster Employee this video was amazing! I would have loved to go to that and I would have LOVED to buy the same magnet you did (I have a real nametag pin just like it)!

    Neat idea. I worked at a small video store chain back in the 90s when I was in school. I think it was $1.00 per tape that was not rewound. Enforcement was hit or miss depending on the clerk. I usually took the fee off. Made the customer happy.

    I worked at a mom and pop video store when I was a freshman in college same age as Adam. I loved it. When it closed I applied at the Blockbuster up the street from it and they told me I had to shave my goatee and mustache off which I didn’t mind doing but didn’t end out getting the job because they were dedicated to hiring people in high school lol. I had aged out at 20

    I worked at a video store in 1998 but it was an artsy store. They had normal movies but also a lot of foreign films, documentaries and stuff.

    I rented from Blockbuster a few times. We had a music and video distributor in our town, so they opened their own rental store. It was inside an old skating rink. They built the floor on top of the skating surface, so the floor would bounce when you walked on it. Their inventory was immense, and they always had some great deals. Ah!!! Those were the days.

    Adam, I'm always amazed when you mention how many times you've rewatched certain movies! I think the most I've rewatched a movie is 5 or so. I always like seeing something new instead of rewatching something.

    I miss those days, I worked at Kroger video for 3 years during high school, lmao after HS there was a non chain store in the area with tanning beds and a back room. Met my first real love at that store. I enjoyed the job I kept good movies plating in the store wile I was working and always cut late fees...

    You mentioned that you applied for a job at the St. Cloud Blockbuster Video location and that brought back memories of doing the same. I lived in St Cloud from 2005-2013 and when I was between jobs I applied for an Asst. Mgr. position there in 2006/07 and the manager there wouldn’t even give me an interview even though I had, at that point, more than a dozen years of retail management experience lol. So he didn’t like your tattoos or my management experience….
