I remember the uproar too. I think this version is fine. Most soaps moved on and updated their tunes, but Eastenders got stuck in the 80s because of the fan uproar. I wish Neighbours had been forced to keep its 80s tune, the new versions aren't as good.

Nice and lengthy, no irritating halfwit yacking over the top, no promotion of what's on next or a number to call if we've been affected by issues raised in the programme, no captions telling us to "get inspired" by something, no daft studio logos or regional oneupmanship - just the cast, the crew and EastEnders © BBC MCMXCIII

Hence why she was credited with her surname. Probably way off here lol, but it's just my theory. She's been a Branning for 10 years now, but the press and public still say Dot Cotton.......and rightly so :P

This version of the tune is great - the only bad part is the saxophone, which makes it sound slick, schmaltzy and Carribean. If you replaced the sax with the iconic "whistle" noise, this would have been an excellent update. Oh and this has reminded me how long end credits used to be! I remember now, whenever you changed channel, half the time it would be on end credits, so you'd have to sit there for 5 minutes waiting to see what was on next (unless the channel was closing down for the night) LOL

No doubt the episodes were cut short to have to play that ridiculous long title at the end! Or just have no adverts for the next program.

Notice in the closing credits, all characters appear by their first name only. Except for one character, whose full name is displayed. Strange.

After a while they started chopping out everybody's first names. A lot of soaps did that to the regulars (Neighbours, Emmerdale, etc) at first

Don’t get me wrong, I like this theme, BUT I can understand why viewers didn’t like it in comparison to the original. It’s all about the doof doofs!!

this is one of those things in history that you look back on and think 'what the hell were they smoking?' :P like, you cant actually believe they did this... but hey they tried it and it clearly did not work... why they thought mixing a jazzy american theme over a map of london is beyond me... you'd think it was some sort of eastenders USA spinoff show or something!

Things only seem odd when they're unfamiliar. If this tune had been kept, people would like be looking back at the original theme and thinking 'what the hell were they smoking?'

The "DOFF DOFF" at the end is infinitely better than any other version but that weird guitar and bass line is what holds this version back for me
