Just the simple fact this game has been delayed multiple times yet a 20 person team managed to release and finish the game during a pandemic makes me want to support their game with more reason. I really hope they release a day 1 patch to address these issues and this game* becomes a huge success!

I think I’m still going to buy it. I had a strong feeling it was going to be meh. I assumed tge story/writing/choices would be lackluster, but I’m interested in the world, gameplay, gear. Sometimes i have more fun with a meh 7/10 than a 9/10 tbh. It just seemed to tick some boxes that will make me overlook the janky stuff.
This is how I feel as well. I never thought this game was gonna be a goty contender but it just looks like a cool game that I can explore. I'm heavy on the loot/crafting games and I pick up everything so I'm more excited for that than anything else.

I mean, this game has been getting eviscerated by early reviews, so I don't know why props would be due just based on team size. Valheim was a 5 person team, and was only $20, critically acclaimed. Outer Wilds was a 20 person team, was only $25, also critically acclaimed. If you're charging $60, it doesn't matter the size of your team, you have to deliver a title as good as any other studio using that price point. That's nothing against these devs, I wish them much future success, but it sounds like they had a major problem with scope creep. Makes me sad too, I've been looking forward to this game for a long while.

It's funny because in Canada the price tag for this game is 59.99$ CAD, while games are usually 79.99$ and now 89.99$ so for us the 60$ price tag is actually low.

You, ACG and Worth a But are my go to for when I am wondering if I should get a game full price, wait for a sale, or throw it in the trash. I wish this game was worth full price, I was so ready to get it. Hopefully in 2-3 months it will be at the $30-$40 price point and pick it up. However, good job for the devs, they pulled off a better job than many triple A studios, so let's see how their next release will look like!
I have a theory that the dev team played a smart move on their part with regards to release. Its a really good alpha. I imagine they are banking on the live service update schedule. The bones are here, they just gotta keep adding. Updates with audio, combat, etc. I don't know what engine this is on but It looks good and i assume they could navigate it. Perhaps with it on the market a money boost could help development and perhaps extra devs.

He literally put together a review of mass effect legendary edition after playing a maximum of 4 hours, never played 1 of the 3 games and and clearly stated it was not a review of the game but instead the remaster itself but proceeded to review the game.
Yeah I think i’m going to get this still, it just is too stylish for me and I love seeing devs taking risks so i’m going to support it. Plus i’ve been wanting a new open world action game. I also have the money to spend.
not realy. more workers means more management, less money for the actual product. not to mention some workers would rather do nothing and surf the internet instead of actually work. they should just improve the focus on the gameplay, right now it looks like Warframe, so many game play styles but no actual depth.
Thanks Matty for the honest review. You are my favorite RPG You Tuber. I never expected this game to be a 10 out of 10 game and should cost more in the region of 40 bucks. I want to experience it myself and support the devs. I think I am the only person who likes the "Ubisoft Formula". I love running around grinding side content (I explored everything in AC Valhalla and Odessey) with a podcast or something on my second pc screen. It´s relaxing for me. As long it´s open world, sp and an rpg with loot I can have fun with it. Greedfall, Elex or Risen for example are games I really enjoyed even if a lot of reviewers criticize them.
This is the sort of game that the adult in me is given pause by it’s flaws, but the kid in me absolutely loves the concept and it’s something I would have imagined when I was younger. One of the small joys of being an adult is that I have the funds to embrace my inner child again 🙂. Great review as always Matty, thank you for the content dude. Ima be honest. With most of the Triple A games at 60-100 recently, being clearly unfinished or live service (another way to say unfinished). I think it's unfair to compare like that. Biomutant is full retail price but everyone is saying its at least a finished product.
That's a low bar you're setting. It's "at least a finished product" so they deserve my praise? Games are supposed to be finished at launch. You can't compare them to the unfinished AAA games no matter how numerous. You have to compare them with the finished ones, if it, like those, are also finished.

After 5 hrs of gameplay I’m loving it. Story is fairly intriguing. Reminds me of Little Big Planet. I’m really in it for the combat and so far it’s delivered

I'm probably in the minority thinking this, but I see a lot of complaints about how "empty" the world is. That's how I felt about Breath of the Wild. Oh so beautiful but oh so empty, with scattered enemies here and there and far and between "dungeons". Still enjoyed it, so I'm sure I'll dig Biomutant too. Anyway, I'll support the dev team no matter what.

And *still* the world was empty. Biomutant in mindboggling in that fashion, IMO. It comes short in a few areas but the scope is incredible.
Breath of the Wild was incredibly boring, and empty. I've not been able to finish it. The food, the weapon degradation were bad enough. But that empty, huge, open world was the deal breaker. I prefer the older Zelda games. And no, climbing does not add to the enjoyment. Especially when rain is all but guaranteed everytime you climb.
Pretty good review and I agree with a lot of your points. Personally I’ve absolutely enjoyed my play through, even with the things the game doesn’t nail down 100%. I hope we see more from this group of devs with possibly more devs on staff and more resources to create something truly incredible that draws in the casual and hardcore gamers alike.
This is clearly an indie game, similar to No Mans Sky. Yet they charge full AAA price for this? Nah ill wait for this to drop to the $30-$40 range. I hate it when companies do this shit. They charge $60, but they want to be measured against and treated as indies. In this case, we are constantly being reminded that this game was made by a team of only 20 odd people. The bottom line is if you wanna charge full price, then you have to contend with the other AAA titles out there, and in that regard this game falls woefully short in my opinion.

Playing this game make me feels like I'm back on my old ps2,so many different companies use to release their own third person games each with their own flavour and approach,this may not be a 8 or 10 but is still a fun experience on it's own.

I think calling a game a "hidden gem" before saying that we should wait for a sale is confusing. It seems like you didn't like the game but you appreciate the effort put forth in making the game. I think that's a valid stance however I would have liked to hear more of your unfiltered opinion pertaining to how much FUN the game was for you. Also, I've heard others say the no lock on wasn't a big deal. I'm not sure where I'd stand with that.
I was so excited for this game. Love the world. Played it a lot once released. It’s fun, it’s just the combat and interactions feel shallow and weightless. Which is surprising consider how deep their systems are.

You could argue that they needed it to be that high to recoup 4 years of development otherwise there was no point. in reality the publisher sets the price anyway not them.
I agree with you there that the price point does factor into it regardless of the team size but, I think even more than the price point or the team size is experience. How many games has this company made? If they'd made several and they're all kind of crappy it seems like maybe they've hit their threshold and that's that. But if this is one of their first games and they've done more than you would expect for a company of their age and size to do then maybe an investment factor is important to consider because if you buy this game they get more money they can hire more people and then expand what they do.
That's how I'm feeling. I don't think I'm gonna be disappointed if I buy this, and I can afford it, so I'm thiiinking about buying it anyways but I'm not sure
@@miniclip13sa well it's personal choice that's most important but one of the key barometers I like to use for buying a game is can I get $1 an hour out of this game. So games like this where there's different builds and lots of replayability shouldn't have to worry about it. If I look at a game and I can't see myself replaying it enough times to get that value that's typically when I'll wait for it to go on sale until it reaches that threshold for me. I do the same with movies if I can't watch it a couple of times to hit that Mark I typically don't buy it till it goes down

I just think in granted excuse me if I'm incorrect I haven't done a lot of research on the game studio making this, that's experience does play an important role, the first Mass effect had its issues but there was improvement I mean we won't get into that whole debuggle of what happened to that studio after it was acquired. The point being I can be more forgiving for a less polished game if it's a newer studio because there is room for improvement now if the next game comes out and they've made no improvement and it's still great with a lot of flaws but I can tell they didn't really make strides anywhere then that's a clear indicator that this company's probably going to continue to produce products of this quality. I am willing to pay a little more money for a good but flawed game because I'm excited to see what they would produce next.

Biomutant is my GOTY. Great combat that is a 3D version of KOA. I don't know how you can't love this game. Plus the world is huge. If you like just wandering around exploring in an rpg, this is your game. Plus the best loot system ever and it fixes the open world problem of tackling any boss at any time well. Just a AAA from a AA studio of ten people. For $40 you can't go wrong.
Matty, I know this is off topic but kinda on the topic of avalanche studios having developed this game. Have you noticed the bugs in rage 2 were never flattened out and that Bethesda refuses to get the game patched? I would mind seeing a video centered around Bethesda's lack of support on some of there titles that haven't sold quite as well.

I think all the signs were there that it might be a “little underwhelming” release when it popped up again after many years of silence. But it definitely had potential and I actually quite like the idea narration and I think there’s couple games that have done it well before (Stanley parable) and hopefully someone does it again too. Also I don’t know if small dev team is a good excuse when we have seen so many awesome games by small teams or done by just one person. Small developers just have to know their limits and try to keep their focus.
I was gonna drop 32.99 on cd keys, but mass effect legendary edition got the goods for 28.00, I'm sure I won't be disappointed, may still get this when the price drops

Excellent game especially compared to half baked AAA titles like cyber punk. We should all be appreciative for how fun it is! And it actually works!

Ima be honest. With most of the Triple A games at 60-100 recently, being clearly unfinished or live service (another way to say unfinished). I think it's unfair to compare like that.
Biomutant is full retail price but everyone is saying its at least a finished product.
That's a low bar you're setting. It's "at least a finished product" so they deserve my praise? Games are supposed to be finished at launch. You can't compare them to the unfinished AAA games no matter how numerous. You have to compare them with the finished ones, if it, like those, are also finished.

But if you compare it to the GoW, BotW, HZD of the $60 price point (the quality games at the price point *should* be) then you see the scales tip less in its favor.

I'm still getting it day one, even with the flaws it seems like it will be a special game. I also feel supporting them now will possibly get a second one with any of the flaws fixed.
How big is it content and map size? Skyrim/fallout/witcher size or more outer worlds size?
After 5 hrs of gameplay I’m loving it. Story is fairly intriguing. Reminds me of Little Big Planet. I’m really in it for the combat and so far it’s delivered

the sound captions in the game when you're fighting enemies are so fun and give off subtle retro gaming vibes..
I'm probably in the minority thinking this, but I see a lot of complaints about how "empty" the world is. That's how I felt about Breath of the Wild. Oh so beautiful but oh so empty, with scattered enemies here and there and far and between "dungeons". Still enjoyed it, so I'm sure I'll dig Biomutant too. Anyway, I'll support the dev team no matter what.
Yea except BoTW has been generally accepted as an incredible game. Biomutant has been quite the opposite

@@a.m.4049 That's what I was going to post, yeah. There's a difference between a game with a 30-something years old classic VG brand and a new IP made by 20 people. BotW had many devs, you think? And *still* the world was empty. Biomutant in mindboggling in that fashion, IMO. It comes short in a few areas but the scope is incredible.
And in BOTW the ability to climb 99% of surfaces is an added layer of interaction that makes the exploration vastly more interesting.
Breath of the Wild was incredibly boring, and empty. I've not been able to finish it. The food, the weapon degradation were bad enough. But that empty, huge, open world was the deal breaker. I prefer the older Zelda games. And no, climbing does not add to the enjoyment. Especially when rain is all but guaranteed everytime you climb.
Pretty good review and I agree with a lot of your points. Personally I’ve absolutely enjoyed my play through, even with the things the game doesn’t nail down 100%.
I hope we see more from this group of devs with possibly more devs on staff and more resources to create something truly incredible that draws in the casual and hardcore gamers alike.

This is clearly an indie game, similar to No Mans Sky. Yet they charge full AAA price for this? Nah ill wait for this to drop to the $30-$40 range. I hate it when companies do this shit. They charge $60, but they want to be measured against and treated as indies. In this case, we are constantly being reminded that this game was made by a team of only 20 odd people. The bottom line is if you wanna charge full price, then you have to contend with the other AAA titles out there, and in that regard this game falls woefully short in my opinion.
It's not their fault that their Publishers are greedy and that's basically what you're saying how sad.
And in a couple off years people are starting a petition crying for a part 2 because they were cheapskates and bought it in a sale or 2nd hand....

Playing this game make me feels like I'm back on my old ps2,so many different companies use to release their own third person games each with their own flavour and approach,this may not be a 8 or 10 but is still a fun experience on it's own.

I think calling a game a "hidden gem" before saying that we should wait for a sale is confusing. It seems like you didn't like the game but you appreciate the effort put forth in making the game. I think that's a valid stance however I would have liked to hear more of your unfiltered opinion pertaining to how much FUN the game was for you.

I was so excited for this game. Love the world. Played it a lot once released. It’s fun, it’s just the combat and interactions feel shallow and weightless. Which is surprising consider how deep their systems are.
The divisive reviews and potential this game seems to have makes me even more intrigued to play it, to see what I myself think of it.
If people are going to forgive some of the criticism because it was a small team that developed the game. Then I think it's only fair to criticize its $60 price tag. If this was a $40 game, I bet there would be more praise.
Fr its cool it was a small team but if the game just sucks but looks pretty is no reason to buy. I wanted to play this so bad but now I will not even buy it. No way I am paying full price for this half baked game. I will wait till it is like 5 or 10 bucks on in a couple years.
You could argue that they needed it to be that high to recoup 4 years of development otherwise there was no point. in reality the publisher sets the price anyway not them.
I am not a fan of Hard lockon in Any game i have played with one...so this is interesting to me your saying it needs one...Can you not aim without it?

I agree with you there that the price point does factor into it regardless of the team size but, I think even more than the price point or the team size is experience. How many games has this company made? If they'd made several and they're all kind of crappy it seems like maybe they've hit their threshold and that's that. But if this is one of their first games and they've done more than you would expect for a company of their age and size to do then maybe an investment factor is important to consider because if you buy this game they get more money they can hire more people and then expand what they do.
That's how I'm feeling. I don't think I'm gonna be disappointed if I buy this, and I can afford it, so I'm thiiinking about buying it anyways but I'm not sure
@@miniclip13sa well it's personal choice that's most important but one of the key barometers I like to use for buying a game is can I get $1 an hour out of this game. So games like this where there's different builds and lots of replayability shouldn't have to worry about it. If I look at a game and I can't see myself replaying it enough times to get that value that's typically when I'll wait for it to go on sale until it reaches that threshold for me. I do the same with movies if I can't watch it a couple of times to hit that Mark I typically don't buy it till it goes down

Who knows I might not get what I want from it but I think I know myself well enough to say I will have a good time.

I just think in granted excuse me if I'm incorrect I haven't done a lot of research on the game studio making this, that's experience does play an important role, the first Mass effect had its issues but there was improvement I mean we won't get into that whole debuggle of what happened to that studio after it was acquired. The point being I can be more forgiving for a less polished game if it's a newer studio because there is room for improvement now if the next game comes out and they've made no improvement and it's still great with a lot of flaws but I can tell they didn't really make strides anywhere then that's a clear indicator that this company's probably going to continue to produce products of this quality. I am willing to pay a little more money for a good but flawed game because I'm excited to see what they would produce next.

Biomutant is my GOTY. Great combat that is a 3D version of KOA. I don't know how you can't love this game. Plus the world is huge. If you like just wandering around exploring in an rpg, this is your game. Plus the best loot system ever and it fixes the open world problem of tackling any boss at any time well. Just a AAA from a AA studio of ten people. For $40 you can't go wrong.
Matty, I know this is off topic but kinda on the topic of avalanche studios having developed this game. Have you noticed the bugs in rage 2 were never flattened out and that Bethesda refuses to get the game patched? I would mind seeing a video centered around Bethesda's lack of support on some of there titles that haven't sold quite as well.

I think all the signs were there that it might be a “little underwhelming” release when it popped up again after many years of silence. But it definitely had potential and I actually quite like the idea narration and I think there’s couple games that have done it well before (Stanley parable) and hopefully someone does it again too. Also I don’t know if small dev team is a good excuse when we have seen so many awesome games by small teams or done by just one person. Small developers just have to know their limits and try to keep their focus.
I got the game on Origin Pro for $15 and plan on beating it within that one month.
