I grew up in Mattapan during the 60's and 70's and rode the Mattapan trolley to school. The trolleys also used to run up River Street to Cleary Square until they were replaced by buses. I still remember the day when the workers came up River Street and paved over the tracks.
Wow, I remember in the early 2000's when I was 10 years old the road was deteriorating and there was shiny metal peaking through. I had no idea those were rails! lol Did the trolley continue from Mattapan to Cleary Square or was it a separate line that went to Cleary Square? Do you know what the end of the line was?
I'm from Abington Massachusetts. I took a walk through mattapan. Great walk. I couldn't have meant nicer people. God bless. Jewish or black. Mattapan has every right to be proud. ☺️
boatymcboatface418 They would have to replace all the track since the current tracks aren’t strong enough to support the newer and much heavier vehicles.
Complicated to fix? I can re-wind a DC motor by hand at the trolley museum I volunteer for. I would love to see someone repair a contemporary VFD drive with a spool of copper wire, a mega-ohm tester and a varnish bath. These plebs live in their own private universe....
Charlotte E And they should also use the type 8. Although that would not be without its cons. In order to do that the MBTA would have to install entirely new tracks and bridges since the current infrastructure is not designed to withstand the much heavier vehicles used on the green line.
The old trolleys are great, but they aren’t very accessible at all. If you’re in a wheelchair then these old trolleys must be a public transportation nightmare. They have to replace these with a low floor streetcar
For the long term they should be replaced by these trams CAF Urbos Elmira, NY factory Alstom Citadis Hornell, NY and Bombardier Flexity Plattsburgh New York
The old trolley’s are nostalgic but you have to realize when it’s time to wave your white flag and finally let them retire and put brand new trolleys on the tracks with modern technology. You put people’s safety at risk including the driver and it’s costing the company money running really old outdated trains. It’s time to let it go.
You didn’t even mention the biggest part. The PCCs are not accessible to people with movement disabilities. If you’re in crutches or a wheelchair the. You will have a very hard time boarding.
I've never been on the Mattapan line but I think we need to keep these

Keep the trolley, replace with modern vehicles, stop arguing.
Maybe even expand it up Blue Hill Ave (although MBTA budget is tight rn)

Why can other cities maintain their old trollies but Boston can't? Don't you have machinists that can make parts?

They last. The brakes work and do not catch on fire
They should take the old Type 7 cars from the Green Line and put them on the Mattapan line.

The type 7s are not wheelchair accessible though. In all likelyhood they will probably use some type 8s which do have low floors
Sure we have a whole field of PCCs here in Pittsburgh that you can pick thru..
Yes, there very worth is.
I would go to Boston just to see these only
Go with caution. Mattapan isn't a very safe place.
Why don't they use the green line trolley and then repaint them
Sean i forgot Yes, just overhaul the line as needed and replace the PCCs with the current Green Line rolling stock.
won't fit on the tracks. but a very good idea
COST OF ROAD REPAIR ON same route 40 million

There are some places in the US where they've installed wheelchair lifts in Old PCC cars.
If they must get replaced then replace them with single ended lrvs

Turns out those don't work very well, even in the Green Line service they were designed for.

They do not catch on fire, brakes work. How much does the other line cost ? Orange line shut down
Let's get rid of them and replace them with new cars.
