My Grandfather was a Blacksmith and so am I ... for such an ancient craft it is surprising there are not more songs in the English folk song book - unlike the sailors shanty's. Thanks for this.
Wonderful stuff! Have had the pleasure of seeing and hearing the majestic Andy on many occasions since 79, most lately at the Fleadh last year when he did this with Donal Lunny, LiamO'Flynn and Paddy Glacken - You know there are millions out there who do not know what they are missing.
@odarochka i was so bummed i missed that. AND i missed him again in brooklyn this year as well. i really have to make it a priority... this guy is my musical hero.
I love this song by Andy! I started building a mandolin to learn this up! Hahaha A great, or the best cover version for me, is a Brazilian version of the band Lunan with Ana Cargon singing in Curtiba's forests!
Thank you Andy.
Wow! What a find! Thank you!!

My favourite song of his time with Planxty!

Was joy to see Andy play in New Jersey this Fall..
Thanks for this!!
Even when he is on his own he can sound like an orchestra!
Saw and of course heard him in Berkeley, CA last year. He played this on what looked like a guitar-shaped bazuki. Just astonishing, what a virtuoso!!!
+John Sheridan Yes, it's a Guitar Bodied Bouzouki (or Gazouki) made by Stefan Sobell I believe.
Absolutely brilliant. As expected from Andy.
the song that started all. Thanks Steve Cooney
Absolutely brilliant recording Simmo! The performance is pretty good too ;-)
This deserves 6 or 7 stars

The voice of Ireland
Anyone can play fast on a mando. Nobody can make one sound this good...
fuckin crackin
Is his bouzouki tuned GDAD in this?
+rogermars I think this is a Mandola but yes, I believe the tuning is GDAD
I think it is tuned DAEA - with the capo, the 'open' strings are AEBE.
Michael Tsarion brought me here
belle maîtrise, et pas de concession !
