When India became independent in 1947 it was the poster child of 3rd world poverty. 400 years of colonization had left it practically de-industrialized with an enormous illiterate and sickly population composed of people of a 1000 different ethnicities and languages with very little commonalities between them. There was a very real chance of it becoming just another banana republic or worse breakup up into a 1000 different states and kingdoms again. Just the fact that the people of this country could put aside all their differences and claw back to where they are now in less than 3 quarters of a century is nothing less than remarkable. Uniting a land thousands of times more diverse and almost the size of Europe into a single nation and then make it an economic success while at the same time fighting internal as well as external threats which would cause most countries to implode under its own weight is no mean feat.

@Adam Buentello Well India was no1 economy from 0BC - 1700AD with most economists across world, putting India share of world GDP from 25-30%, then British came, looted all its massive gold & wealth, deindustrialized India, killed million in man made famines, made india into a global poverty poster boy when they left.
Guess who Owned East India Company, under british banner - heard the name rothschild.
It is estimated by a British & American economist, the total wealth looted/drained out of India by british in current terms is $45 Trillion, somemultiple times current USA total wealth.
India will rebound & reclaim its spot in No1 position, china has weak macro lvl strength in economy, sonner or later it will go bust.

      Indonesia
Actually Indonesia is a rich country.
Just before the colonial era, many of our assets were seized by western nations.
And after independence, America borrowed 50,0000 tons of our gold bars to build America.
As a guarantee ... America will support Indonesia in all fields. Starting from the military, economy and business.
America used to consider Indonesia not yet time to move forward. If the gold bar is used, building Indonesia will suffer a loss. So America flirts with all means including via g30spki.
They make plays in our country.
They beat sheep. Through the CIA.
But the government is silent because CiA is really smooth.
Well ... When American president Kennedy met Sukarno in America.
They made a secret agreement. The ANTI SECRET SOCIETY catchphrase.
What I know is that the agreement will return the gold bar back to Indonesia. BUT UNFORTUNATELY HAPPY. Kennedy was killed by the SECRET SOCIETY group which did not want an Asian country to surpass America, namely Indonesia.
There are not many facts about this. But it was diverted by Western Media. Until now Indonesian assets are still in America. And this is the task of our president later.

Maybe you didn't rebel but your children may rebel or your children's children. It's basic psychology. Sorry all..
There is an Indonesian slogan of Asian tigers sleeping. It is true.
    Just waiting for time.

GDP is a very poor indicator. I don't know why it's even used. GDP simply measures the value of all the goods and services produced by an economy. It says nothing about the quality of life of an average citizen. That being said, one may argue that the quality of life of an average American is far superior to that of the average Chinese and most certainly far superior to that of the average Indian. And it probably will continue to be this way for a while. The US invested heavily in infrastructure post war and laid strong foundations for growth and development - something which the Chinese started doing about 10-15 years ago and something which India hasn't done even now.

People are comparing India and China in the comments here.
    So let’s make it clear.
Both countries have invented one of the most important things for humanity, and both contributed 52% of the world gdp for 1500 years, but then India was held down by the British, the Indian gdp was 31% of world share in 1600s and the Chinese used to call India heaven, while the western called it the Golden bird. However in 1947 when India gained independence it was broken apart the gdp contributed was 1.2%, 93% of the people were under the line of extreme poverty, Indian industries and importance of India was destroyed from the trade of the earth. While China was growing, India had to build up into a nation, the people ruling the country also had an important role in this, China was controlled by a strong and powerful government while the congress government is ranked as one of the most corrupt governments in the world, regarding that, in 1970s 70% of the Indian population were living in poverty and that’s when China began its Industrial revolution. After 20 years India finally thought of doing something similar and in 1990s India was seeking towards industrial revolution, while at that time China had already gained a strong position in trade and technology. And in 2000s India finally started to gain a real growth and in 2014 Indians finally chose a different government than congress, since then India is the fastest growing economy in the world, the extreme poverty was 29% in 2014 and in 2019 its 3.6%, the new government formed a lot of changes to India they boomed the country’s infrastructure, development, technology, defense, and for the first time India became the most invested nation in the world even beating the mighty China, the government digitalized India and internet was given free the user count reached 650+ million in 4 years from 300 million users at a growth rate of 700%. And now India is seeking a similar growth like China did in 2000s. So in the end we could say that China is 20 years ahead of India and they can’t be compared as of now. And I hope Indians will use their brains to choose the right people to rule the country.

In that case there s edge for China as manufacturing , but with quantum computing , physics ,chemistry or any other science China is way behind of USA . Many people getting happy over US going to be third place in terms of economics, even my fellow Indians but you have to accept the fact that how 300 mil people manage to stay on the top for so long,
answer - innovation, Go do it attitude
My country creates genius talented people but fails to provide opportunities that's why most successful Indians are in USA because it's the land of opportunities, it will provide you with opportunity for wealth and power if you want to have, irrespective of the fact who you are and from where you are.
Yes, times are changing and so are balance of power and I would love to see my country on the top but for now we know our limits, we know it will take time and I am ready to work for it and for my fellow Indians it's time for some innovation and hard work instead of theft of ideas from other countries let's provide equal opportunities for those who deserves and work for it instead of demeaning some country and hard work.
    Peace🙏

" How 300 mil people manage to stay on the top for so long. " Simple = at the costs of many more people being starved and robbed around the world. They don't produce all that much but make other countries buy their junk for high price$ which they print out of thin air. Also, their economy is not owned by the USA or the American's at all but very very small percentage of the population actually have a big running business. The rest are just servants and living on dept. That's America for you.
