    I wonder how do you measure thrust with that type of engine? And do you control the thrust by controlling the size of the ring, or is it the amount of fuel put into the engine? Can you even control the fuel flow rate or is it set to flow so much fuel by it's design and that's it? How would this engine compare to say a Saturn V F1 engine of equal size? I have soooo many questions.

    It's amazing that this is technically a rocket engine even though it burns jet fuel. Is the "rocket" designation applied because the fuel is detonated? Or because it doesn't use compressors and fans like a jet engine does?
    Is there an afterburner capability?

    • @titanbot11
      @titanbot11 2 года назад +2

      A rocket engine is just an engine designed for a rocket, and most rockets burn a more refined jet fuel, RP-1, this engine however uses hydrogen, which is why the flame is orange, it's the water vapor glowing in the exhaust

    What numerical method did you use to develop the simulation?
    Finite Element
    Boundary Element
    Finite difference
    Or some other method
    Do you solve the Navier Stokes equations coupled with thermodynamics? Any other equations governing the physical phenomena?

    Interesting. A few questions:
    1. Would this be air breathing in the real world? Like not carry its own oxidizer?
    2. Would the geometry need to be movable/variable to be able to operate under different atmospheric conditions?
    3. If it were air breathing, I wonder how susceptible to fouling or erosion from dust or dirt or water? If it "ingests" a bug, would that get instantly incinerated, or would it disrupt the rotating detonation?
    4. Maybe you'd have some kind of screen or way to limit the FOD, but that would also create a drag/power penalty.

    • @thatxmas
      @thatxmas Год назад +1

      This wouldn't be air breathing, this is a rocket engine. The pressure in the combustion chamber requires high pressure pumping of fuel and oxidizer.

      Well, internal combustion engines,.. the flame front moves kinda slow and way below the sound barrier roughly 10m/s in the process called deflagration, on the other hand in this type of engine (RDE) the flame front/shockwave travels a heck of a lot faster roughly 2000m/s, so RDE engines are the Internal Explosion engine, hopefully this somewhat clarifies it (I’m definitely no expert so it could be all wrong)

      @@tbyte007 the j20 engines lifespans are measured in 10s of hours, all of their current flying j10s use Russian import engines entirely, it's also worth noting those Russian designs arnt very good, they are _very_ old, about the same as the f14a engines, they are powerful but guzzle fuel because the profiling of the engine was done on tape and reel computers from the 70s when fluid dynamics was a pipe dream.

    Remember when it was cool to be in the Military? When Disney's Tomorrowland was filled with things from NASA? It was like a wonder for all ages the advancements that have and will be achieved in the future. I still remember the songs played.
    And now we get Memo's on how to use gender neutral language for the Chair force.
    Truth is? I wonder if Lockheed already went past most of this Chemical propulsion and skipped right over to something else since its military use is now somewhat diminished.
    That? Or there is no real drive to create or innovate since the entire reason for Mankind doing so has been usurped from the joy of creating a better tomorrow?
    what a strange turn things can make in 40 years
