I want to learn how to ring bells like that! I will go to Chevetogne in the hope the monks will teach me how... At least I could then say: I now how to play an instrument! An what a BIG instrument! Profoundly beautiful!
@greenoak1 You should listen to Russian bells with Russian ears, and not "with just a modicum of music theory". Russian bells are not tuned, because the sound of a bell is its soul, and tuning a bell would change its soul. So the tones of Russian bells are not in harmonic relations according to Western musical standards. Still they can form a beautiful harmony, but it takes some time to learn to appreciate this, as is the case with any product of a foreign culture.
Ringing the New Church Bells of Chevetogne Monastère de Chevetogne ( ruclips.net/video/HdBwKhREzP8/видео.html ) Monastère de Chevetogne +++ greenoak1 3 года назад It is very awesome indeed, but I find the dissonance overwhelming. I am no bell ringer so I have no experience in these matters, but it seems there might be a better way to play these bells - with just a modicum of music theory. As it stands, it is a cacophony of sounds - not so great. I'm surprised the birds are still chirping in the end. This is not heavenly music - but it could be with a little thought. +++ Paul V. Magnificent & arresting & interesting played by a master! Was not aware that bells of that size & number can be played by hand. Remarkable!
