Nothing has improved in volleying in the last 25 years. Top players like Sinner and Zverev have no clue. And they are being “taught” by coaches who couldn’t volley either. And punching volleys from that far back in the court is completely wrong. The transition volley is much more of a glide through the ball than a punch. Ever heard of Stefan Edberg?
I think racquets being so light and flexible these days means you can punch volleys from transitionary points of the court for extra pace. I mean, you're saying not to punch them but you're emphasising bodily momentum as a way of getting closer to the net to then make a punch volley. But i think you can punch that first volley as well. I mean, almost all of the time if you have to hit two volleys in the modern game, you've lost the point. Two attempts at passing shots will have guys easily rip the ball out of reach.
@ it’s always been possible to punch volleys from anywhere. Duh! It’s the distance from the net and target that makes a quick contact punch a fools errand. You can hit a drop shot from where Medvedev stands, but that doesn’t make it effective.
Great reminder! Looking forward to modifying my volley practice. Thank you!
Good luck with it!! Hope it helps 😊
