- Backpacking to the summit of Cold Mountain is a trip filled with beautiful scenery and unique natural features such as stunning Shining Rock. In the Spring and Summer, many varieties of wild flowers and flowering bushes are in bloom. In August, the landscape is covered with ripening blueberries.
Jeff and Ken hike from the Sam Knob parking area to the summit of famous Cold Mountain located in Shining Rock Wilderness, Pisgah National Forest, NC. They follow Ivestor Gap Trial to Ivestor Gap where they connect with the Art Loeb Trail. The first night is spent in Flower Gap and the second night, Deep Gap.
The Sam Knob parking area is the start of two possible routes to the summit of Cold Mountain; this one being the longer but less strenuous option. Cold Mountain summit is approximately 8.2 miles from the Ivestor Gap trailhead found at the north end of the parking area. The other route starts at the Art Loeb trailhead located near Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp.
Cold Mountain is the tallest peak in Shining Rock Wilderness with its summit 6,000 feet above sea level. It has become more well known with the release of the novel and Hollywood film bearing the same name.

Best one yet!
Thanks!!
One of my favorite places to visit, you did it justice, well done
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I love it there, too! There is always something new to discover. My buddy and I recently hiked the whole Art Loeb Trail. I hope to have the video posted soon 😀
Great video job, great hike!! We hiked Cold Mountain Aug 5 2023 from Daniel Boone Camp trail
Thanks so much! Hiking up from Camp Daniel Boone is definitely an accomplishment. Well done 😎
Just did this hike today April 17,2022.. amazing with no leaves on the trees and the sun ☀️.. love your video. Very inspirational and peaceful.. look at all those lilies and wildflowers you took a lot of shots TY. All the blueberries and no bears sweet deal too
That’s great! Thanks for sharing your experience hiking this trail mid-April. Things look so different without the leaves!
Hey I really like your channel! The videos are really well done! 👍
Thank you so much! Likewise! I checked out your channel. Keep at it 😀
Very nice Jeff! No bear footage?
Haha! Thankfully, not this time!
Really enjoyed the video and the map overlay that tracked y’alls progress. How did you do that? Also, was there water at Flowers Gap?
Thanks so much! Map was done with Adobe After Effects. I’m no expert so there was a little bit of a learning curve. Pretty awesome program, though. I don’t remember if we filled up when staying at Flower Gap. If we did, the fill up spot is a little further north on the trail; maybe 1/4-1/2 mile. There’s a spot on the right. Glad you enjoyed the video! 😄
@@jfowler I’ll have to start playing around with it, it just made the video so much easier to follow. Thanks for letting me know about the water, I’m thinking about doing this trip in a week or so, should be good!
@Sam89365 the monthly fees for Creative Cloud were killing me so I switched to DaVinci Resolve since this video. I’ve been really liking the program so far and it’s nice to have video editing, color correction, effects and audio editing all in one interface. The free version does everything I need so far, but I’m sure I’ll upgrade in the future. You might check it out if you’re still looking at options 😎
@@jfowler yeah I’m definitely looking at options to add some neat graphics to some of my videos. Really appreciate you sharing what you’ve used and like!
