Make sure you clicked on the mask, so the right "box" in your layer pallet, which is white when you add the layer mask. (i hope you understand me, my english is not very good...)
Thanks. That's the way I do it but I inverse the layer mask and start with all black and add in sharpening where I want it by painting with white...same thing really.

no. color correction is a different matter thand sharp. It is better to use the normal color space.
