Watching this SUPER late, man the skits were gold. I get why he doesn’t do em but man cracks me up every time.
After looking at this mold for long enough, I feel the hip plates are probably my biggest compaint about it. There's a third party kit coming out that seems to fix that, but eh.

Thanks for the review man, I've had mine on display for a little while and I must admit I prefer him to Iron Hide, I like the mould over all but do agree there is something not quite right about it. The Shockwave / Rachet comparison was spot on as Shockwave nails the look for me but it isn't quite there with the quality. I know I have said it quite a bit and don't want to sound like a Fans Toys fanboy but they are what I think Masterpiece should feel like in hand, the feel so much more substantial and of higher quality. But saying that I have Masterpiece and Fanstoys all on display together and they look pretty dam good! :)

2.5years later. I don't mind ratchet having a gut. Mostly cause of his characterization Animated and onward. As the crotchety old medic, and the gut kinda works with that
Great review, as always. On my desk I have Fanstoys Sludge and next to him stand MP Ironside and Ratchet. Pound for pound Sludge is better. Heftier, better build quality, excellent paint. When I first transformed Ratchet my hands were covered in little white flecks of paint that cracked off from between the joints. The only other time I had that was when transforming the cassette guy that came with KFC's Transistor. They (the vans) both feel like they could have done with a final pass. As you say, there's room around back to do something better with the hip skirts.. Maybe take the front bumper with them too.. Lately it just seems that Takara are cutting corners a bit more than they used to. To me the last stellar quality MP figure was Wheeljack. After that there seems to be a little half assedness to things in places. Tracks' design, Shockwave's build quality, Ratchet's paint, Ramjet's shoulders, the tolerances on Hotrod.. They're not bad figures by any means, but they seem to have lapsed in overall quality in one way or another.

I love both Ironhide and Ratchet so I would very much like them to have a 2.0 treatment or a 3rd party (Fans Toys) treatment so I can add them to my MP collection and display. what I mean is... I'm with you on this one Bobby, I'm not happy with the way they look. Thanks for both reviews of this mold Mr. Skullface.
chipping paint on a Takara MP?? Great. First it was the transition to plastic. Then the hollowness. Then the loose joints (mp Tracks). Then smudged paint (mp Wheeljack). Now chipping paint. As soon as I pick up Ironhide and Ratchet I'll be done with Takara. See ya guys. Great review as always, Mr SF. 👍👍

Watching skullface reviews at 6am with my coffee in Punta Cana! Life is good! Great review as always. Had the same issue with the top of the ambulance piece not flipping and chipping so I left it alone as well. After watching this the ocd in me is gonna comb my bot for paint chips! Arrrgh! Lol. Lol Other than that I'm pretty satisfied with this release. Keep doing your thing brother and if you ever find the time check out of one of my reviews. Would definitely love some feedback from my favorite TF reviewer! Cheers!

Bobby. whats really funny is I have some of the same issues as you with this guy. But I do still love the figure. I havent had the paint issues but I also havent handled my figure very much. so to speak. lol. really good review. I appreciate it. you pointed out somethings to look out for.

Ok, I dig Ratchet, and old Iron butt too, hip skirts be damned. As quality goes, they are the new build standard. However, MP-10 says we need no "new" standard, simply a desire to provide a quality item. As bots go now, Fans Toys is the standard for quality in my book. Just got my Stomp and WTF. It's like rainbow flavored fruit happiness in my hands. Seriously, wow. Not to mention the actual "qc" sticker on the figure, could be bs but I have no issues with them beyond Scoria. I may have to pick up Grinder for quality's sake.

I agree with the chest/stomach but it's just that the head and face sculpt & the eyes that whole part of it is so perfect that I wanna get it now that shot at 21:06 is great

The paint is a real issue for me (thanks for making me interested in that again), paint is one of the few things that when they bother to do it well, TT are king of the ring. Flaking when new is pathetic. Will be modding the hips so they parts form, which helps the look, even tho it bugs me that I have to dot it. Its good enough, and that's a little bit sad.
Whats really funny is my FT Sludge landed this morning an he blows away pretty much everything else in my MP collection. MP10, magnus (buttflap forgiven) and wheeljack are the only things i'd rate with him. With 2 beast wars figures coming there's nothing exiting for me in the MP line currently, as BW just isn't my thing and that worries me.
I always say it but awesome as always man, creeping up to 6K subs too, great to see.

Lets just hope Takara can deliver with Inferno . So far it looks promising, even tho I could of done with a Jazz, Cliffjumper, Mirage, or Trailbreaker before an Inferno... but I'll take what I can get. Keep those videos coming.
Inferno does look quite promising to me.
The eyes are a separate piece that aren't glued and sometimes get pushed back. They can be pushed back in to sit more flush with the face. Makes it look better. I noticed yours was doing this.

Great presentation. Other than me wishing he had a more boxy looking chest and that he didn't have tire butt. Other than that, I think he's alright.

I do like Ratchet more than Iron Hide when it comes to this mold. I didn't have the chipping problems yours had, but that face falling off easily plagues mine as well. Nicely done review.

Fantastic review and once again I gotta give you props for speaking your mind. I don't agree with every thing you say but I don't have to people like different things you know different beats for different meats lol. I'm a fan of Ratchet and I like this figure, it's the cleanest Ratchet but mostly because it captures the spirit of the character. the chest works on this one better than iron hide. if you're a nerd like me you know that ratchet was originally a female....nurse ratchet. last minute changes made her a him. I think I'll grab a KO to play with and leave to TT on the shelf.

Good review Skull… I just stumbled onto this review a few moments ago. I have been watching a bunch of your stuff on & off over the last few days. Kind of killing time doing it… but also kind of getting some ideas what I need to do with my review that I haven’t finished up. I keep getting distracted with family stuff… & not getting it done.
Overall… I thought that the Ironhide/Ratchet mold was ‘okay.’ I actually like them. Just thought that it needed some touching up. The only thing that I didn’t like about it is whoever was designing it made me feel like that they were getting bored with it… & just kind of slapped things together at the end. Mostly with the hip kibble. I feel that they could have finished that up better… but were getting bore with it & said “I done.” 1 or 2 more hinges would have cleaned things up so much. And once you remove that hip kibble… the figures look so much better. And different! You wouldn’t think something so simple would make that much of a difference… but it does. I’m glad to see that Shadow Fisher is coming out with a kit next month to mod the hip kibble. There have been a couple people that have been working on it… but not actually getting anything out there. So it’s cool to see that they are actually doing it!
Overall… I thought that they looked pretty good. I thought that I wasn’t going to enjoy the face sculpts… but after getting them in hand… they actually grew on me & I liked the look of them. I think the biggest detractor for me on this figure is the hip kibble. It’s funny how just changing 1 little thing like that can drastically change the look of the entire figure. Not playing the devil’s advocate here… but realistically… NONE of the MP’s that Hasbro has made so far have been 100% accurate to what the characters looked like in the cartoon. There have been some that have been closer in design than others… but realistically none of them have been dead on. Considering the fact that Ironhide/Ratchet both transform from basically a big square block… the amount of detail that they are able to get in & getting them to have the amount of articulation in humanoid form is amazing! A part of me would have liked better wheels… overall I thought that the design was pretty good apart from the hip kibble.
Overall… how would you say the paint chipping on Ratchet is like? I bought mind 2nd hand… & I haven’t had an issue (yet) with the arms… but I have had an issue with the rear of the roof when I have been transforming him into a robot. Because how the parts rub together. Have you had that same problem?

Think one of your girls got a couple flakes of glitter on your backdrop. When you got to final thoughts, can see some dots near his right side. Roughly on level with his arm, leg, and head. Thought I was losing pixels until you slightly moved the camera and or moved the figure over their locations. You thinking of getting the upgrade sides fix?
Glitter is a contaminant lol. I haven't decided on the upgrade yet

Yeah I love mine , but they got to work on their paint in the new factory it seems. My paint comes off easy on Ratchet. Almost would have rather had white plastic instead at this point.

Popping in to save would-be DIY'ers - I THINK it's actually Ironhide who is CORRECT. The stamp on the mold indicates this (L vs R) plus you'll find Ratchet's vehicle mode does not compact as cleanly as Ironhide's does.

+youmongrel I did the fix on Ironhide, and my Ironhide compacts just fine, as does my Ratchet... there was literally no change on mine swapping shoulder pieces other than aesthetic fix of no longer seeing ratchet teeth in the shoulder.
Anyway they'll do a second run of Ironhide and Ratchet to fix these problems?

I didn't like Ironhide, won't be getting him due to the mentioned issues, but I don't know what it is about Ratchet but those issues don't bother me as much with him. I will have to pick him up! :) (And hopefully that 3p who is making new hip flaps for Ironhide does them in white too!)

I forgive a lot of things about the design of this character mold, but after seeing Inferno from the same company... well.. It's harder to forgive things... Lets hope the paint and everything else are on the money like the sculpt there. And for that matter, I hope its cost isn't much more than Backdraft who I sadly cancelled on :\

Sorry for the double up here but I gotta say it. In the section of the video where your comparing the shoulders on the 2 figures I cant help but notice that no matter how you move Ironhide around it looks like Ratchet is staring at his butt. I cant unsee it now lol.
