      Will do! I have a question.. have you heard Rogue cronus magnum iii I am wondering if this is comparable.
      I am set to buy magnepan 1.7i and adding GR Research triple open baffle sub. I wonder if this or the Rogue would compliment the Maggie's better. I am also looking at the Aries 2 Dac but I'm not sure that will be the best synergy with Maggie's.
      Any thoughts would be helpful. Thank you Thomas and as always nice video! Your production value is legitimate my friend!!!

    This is why my Cayin LA 34 now sounds wonderful with either the 4X PsVane el34 tubes or the 4X Mullard el34 tubes together with 2X PsVane 12au7 gold pin and either 1x JJ Ecc 803S gold pin or 1X PsVane 12ax7 gold pin. It took time and patience trying out many tube brands, but I am now fully satisfied and comfortable with the wonderful sound of this Cayin LA34 at 32 watts per channel matched with a Marantz cd6004 and the small 120W Wharfedale Diamond 10.4 Floorstanding speakers in my bedroom. All these I bought brand new in mid 2014 and are still playing beautifully today 2 to 3 hours per day.

    Cayin amps look gorgeous! Their 845 amp seems to have proven an 'end game' purchase for several buyers according to reviews I've seen. It would need to be at the price mind you. I made my 'end game' purchase last year and went back to solid state after tubes for several decades. I wanted the convenience of an all in one streamer/amp/phono stage box and it sounds great with my new hi end speakers. I got my twenty something year old Audio Innovations 500 amp serviced before I gifted it to a friend. I hooked it up to my new speakers with my really high quality new cables just to compare. That was a mistake I think. I realised I just prefer the sound of tubes and here I am watching tube amp reviews some months later.

    Cayin and Line Magnetic sell their products at less than half price in China, or say the distributor sales over 2x the price in the US. Manufacturer does not sell 110v version for regular customer so that you cannot import them by yourself. The only reason they can get away with this is because the tube amps manufactured in US are so freaking overprice, proper 300B amp starts at $2000 here while in China it starts from $500 and you can get Line Magnetic 300B amp or better ones at $1000. I get that Chinese labor is much cheaper so it make sense for other brands, but for Cayin(Primaluna) and LM, I just want to point out that the difference is so large it's incredible, even imported full size speakers doesn't have this kind of problem.

    Thomas thanks for this video and exploring gear out of China. I bought this from MusicTeck, which has amazing customer service, last Friday and got it Wednesday which is remarkable. Arrived in perfect condition. Set it up next to my long time McIntosh C2200 and MC402. Plugged it into my Aerial Model 8B which are not that efficient (86db) 4 ohm speakers so I was not expecting too much. First few hours my impressions was well it's good, better than expected. After about 20 hours my Mac gear is sitting on the floor. This thing is unbelievably good! Playing through the Aerials, it has more top to bottom, mids are more lifelike, the volume levels are insane for this "low" watt amp. The only thing the Mac stack has over this little integrated tube amp is bass control and more power which I seldom use. Please review more of gear out of China that are high quality like Cayin.

    I agree. My Cayin integrated tube amp came with it's own Cayin el34 power tubes, Cayin 12au7 (2 pcs) 12ax7 (1pc). After years of tube rolling I have now settled with either PSVane el34 power tubes or Mullard el 34 tubes. Two PSVane 12au7 gold pin preamp tubes, and a JJ ECC803 or a PSVane 12ax7 or a Tung Sol Ecc803 gold pin depending on the kind of music I intend to listen to. I cannot invest in expensive NOS tubes as I am contented with my chosen tubes. My integrated amp is now 12 years old and performs well, no issues at all.

      the CS-55A is a very good choice. you can switch power tubes from the KT88 and EL34's. I can connect to a turntable as well, and can feed any floorstanding speaker in the 150 to 200 watt/speakers, those that are in the 88db sensitivity and up.

    Thomas you make a very good point about it taking work to get a system to sound good. It just doesn't just apply to tube gear. I remember an owner of a local boutique audio shop telling me that many people would come back to him and tell him that the system that they bought just doesn't sound good in their homes. System matching and synergy is everything in this "hobby". Once someone moves beyond budget gear things are more complex.

      that's the downside of this hobby. need to be well heeled. Definitely need to be drawing a wage above the national average. An entry level speaker or amp or DAC starts at USD$500. That's not a small amount for a lot of folks, but it's considered entry level gear, and that's only a part of the hifi chain.

    Dear Thomas, finally you tested a CAYIN, I have at home a A-50T that is basically the same CS-55A without the PHONO and DAC (I use separate components), I prefer the EL34 over the KT88. I have used lots of tubes, now using Genalex KT77 with Genalex 12AX7 and EH 12AU7. The KT77 has a lager plate so it is pretty similar to the KT88, it gives more puch without losing the sweetness of the EL34, but probably the new MULLARDs are the nicest sounding I have tried. I almost always use the amp in TRIODE mode because its better for imaging and sound stage, I don't hear at high sound pressure levels, I will go to ULTRA LINEAR if I want to rock the house. I drive DALI RUBICON 6 speakers 89dB sensitivity and the combination is made in heaven, needless to say the RUBICONS are 3 times more expensive than the amp. Most people don't know, but Prima Luna gear is built by CAYIN, just look inside, same components, finish, labor, design(?). I also own AUDIO RESEARCH gear, but if you take in to account what you pay and what you get, I think CAYIN is impossible to beat. The ARC sounds better (slightly) but it cost me 16K USD, 8 times the price of the CAYIN! The CAYIN CS-88A is about the same power that the CS-55A but is on a higher level, that amp is really amazing. There new model is the CS-150A that uses KT150 tubes and is 100 watts RMS, I would love to try that one!

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  4 года назад

      Thanks for letting me know and wow, you even have a $16k Audio research amp to compare. Yeah, it really depends also on the speaker you have and a question of taste. Some will prefer the EL34. I think auto bias is overrated for the cost difference. I see it as a nice to have but not necessary to have especially at the added cost difference.

    So please do more as and when possible. Perhaps a smaller entry level Cayin or line magnetic. But I appreciate with so many others Chinese tube brands out there, in the usual hifi way it all gets confusing to sort the chaff from the wheat. Thanks again

    This is an excellent review! I have the Cayin A50t, which I imagine is quite similar sonically to the C-55A if the CS-55A could only use EL34s. The A50t has fantastic inner detail for an integrated amp under $2k. A very pleasant top end and a clear, focused midrange both accurately describe the A50t. Mr. Kanta's comment about the CS55A lacking in deep male vocals is also consistent with what I hear with the A50t. My feeling is that the overall bass is not as controlled, defined, and present as in some other amps, but is acceptable. I feel that this amp would excel with speakers that use a 8" or larger bass driver, but I am using it with a pair of Focal Electra 906s (which use a 6.5" bass driver) and really like the mid and upper mid clarity. Female vocals are very nice with great presence. As you note, soundstage is good, but maybe not the best I've heard. Overall, these Cayin amps are great buys and punch well above their weight. What sold me on the amp (site unseen) was Harry Weisfeld's quote: "The Cayin A50t is the best low-price amp I have ever heard, and it rivals some of the best amps in any price range." A great Stereophile review also helped. Thanks for posting this review and offering comparisons to some of the other amps on the market. Well done!

      @@ThomasAndStereo Yes, I imagine that is true. The A50t doesn't have that option, but I can see how the extension and bass definition of a set of 6550s or good KT88s would help. Of course, you would miss a bit of that El34 midrange liquidity.

    Finally a reviewer explains the importance of tube rolling and the necessary time investment when getting a tube amp. Well done for that, this is just educational! If the quality of tubes in a tube amp represents may be 30-40% of the sound quality, when buying a tube amp one should be prepared to invest in tubes for a similar fraction of its price. I think that it is more cost effective to roll the preamp tubes than the power tubes.
    Many of the most prominent RUclips reviewers stick to the stock tubes and I don't get it, they are just not explaining the spirit of what a tube amp is. Tube amplifiers also offers the flexibility to taylor the sound to one's liking or one's room so why not do it?
    I have had the Wilsenton R8 with me for the last month with stock KT88 tubes and I have some comments concerning the stock preamp tubes. The stock 6SN7 tubes (of Russian origin I believe) make the amp sound really grainy/harsh in the midrange, especially obvious on vocals and make the amp sound unrefined. I really disliked the sound of the amp at that stage and it is a bit beyond me that other reviewers liked the sound as is (they were using the stock tubes from the footage unless they tube rolled without telling us...). I replaced them with a pair of NOS RCA 6SN7GT Grey bottles from 1950 and the sound is transformed. Vocals are very good now, (which is a must for a tube amp!) and acoustic instrument sound right with a much more cohesive and refined soundstage. I am waiting for some NOS 6SL7 now to further improve the sound.
    Obviously at this price point the Willsenton can not possibly come with quality tubes and they are not even decent but it is possible to transform its sound from poor to good with the $100 I paid for the NOS 6SN7's. May be it could become really good/excellent with some NOS 6SL7/power tubes?

    I had the opportunity to test the C-55A with my Sopra 2 and here is my feedback. I can compare it to my current amplifier which is a nuprime STA AMG (D class). With EL34 tubes and for digital audio files (source is Oppo 205), i had to use the UL mode to get some relief on music, but on some traks bass were on the boomy side. So at the end, more feeling to hear a radio FM than a Hifi system (I exagerate but this way you can understand). So I switched tubes with KT88 from JJ. I could’nt imagine that it could change so deeply the result. First I had to use triode mode only which is more transparent. With UL mode it was like a DSP added on music : unnatural. It is due by the fact that with KT88 the cayin became more dynamic, more precise, more airy. Less than with the nuprime, but with a magical added texture on voice that pushed emotions to a next level. The downside is with digital files with many instruments or with bad record quality : it is less alive than with the nuprime, and results can be more or less good, while with nuprime it is more constant. Last but not least, I tried the phono entry. Just one word : FABULOUS. I never heard my vinyls like that. An unbeliveable 3D stage, with very detailed sound. Your speakers disappear and if you close your eyes you immediatly transferred to the concert hall or the recording studio. Results are far better than all my digital files, including very good SACD, even with the nuprime. The dream would be to get this result with the digital files. That’s why I didn’t keep it and continue to search the graal which should be a tube amplifier.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  3 года назад

      Thanks for sharing your experience. If you were able to get great sound with the phono, then logic would say that the amp is capable to deliver good sound with the right source. I simply cannot imagine why anyone needs to spend more than $3000-$5000 for a system (2-6 speakers and amp/receiver).
    You're not going to listen but so loud (so you only need so many drivers at a certain limited size) and once you get past a certain quality, things just get different not really closer to overall perfection from what I've heard.
    I've heard very good treble, powerful bass, good attack, huge soundstage and vocals, life sized brass and drum instruments and decent imaging from my systems. What else can there be? I think most of this is hype.
    I've found I really like horn speakers. I may get a set of Klipsch forte iii or heresy IV one day. I may try a pair of focal one day. Maybe Magnepans, tekton, or ohm. But I'm quite delighted already with my Klipsch, Elac, infinity and JBL. Every time I see people talking about $20k systems I shake my head and wonder why. Hello Thomas and friends. Kind request: I have a Cayin cs 55a with original tubes. Please let me know what tubes you recommend for upgrade. Thanks.

    Now you make me want to try the Magnepan 1.7i + Cayin CS-55A or higher.

      Keep in mind we pushed the volume knob of the CS55A to 1 o'clock so not easy to drive.

    So Thomas this amp and Magnapan LRS, could be the end state for most? Can you provide a list of all parts for this end state? Very interesting.

    Hi Thomas... I was in the market for a hegel h120 or a nad... But for the price now I can probably grab one of these. Id be using the amp to power the mains (kef R700) from a hybrid HT/hifi set up.
    What should I do?

      The endless debate between solid State and Tubes. There is no 'correct' answer. It really depends on each person and you need to go listen to some tubes to see if it is for you.

      @@ThomasAndStereo Too true. I find having a tube pre to add in to my ever growing SS collection is a nice option when things get too crisp. Still haven't climbed out of the Modi 3 rabbit hole yet either. Can't say any arrangement of components sounds better/best - they all sound different and yet great. Cheers from Denver!

    I plan on connecting a turntable to this unit but until I do can I connect my I-phone straight into the DAC input or use the line input?

    Hi Thomas - this was an excellent review. As an owner of the Cayin USA 55T MKIII integrated I can attest to much of what you had to say about Cayin. You mentioned that there were some newer tube amps out that sound more solid state than tube. Which brands are you thinking of? Is Rogue Audio might on that list? How about Prima Luna? Thanks again for a great review.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  4 года назад

      I like the older Prima Luna, the EVO series sounded a bit too solid state for me but I only heard it at my friend's place. I have never heard the Rogue Audio.

    Would you recommend this amp for LS50 Meta speakers? Currently using my beast Parasound HCA 2003. I used to own Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum, but sold due to health issues. I loved listening to tube amps. Please advise.

    Hi Thomas, thanks for your video, very informative as always! Any chance of you reviewing the SC-6LS MK2 premap? The Cayin integrateds have a decent selection of reviews online but this pre is criminally under-reviewed.

      @@ThomasAndStereo Meanwhile I bought one to replace my solid state preamp, it was discounted to approx. 1,200$ on their official store so not a hard decision. Here goes my mini review: sound-wise it's a clear improvement paired with my primaluna phono stage and class A/B poweramp. Build quality is solid with both a better volume knob as well as a better remote than the Pro-ject Pre Box RS I had before. Talking about that remote, it was dead on arrival but Cayin were super responsive to my messages, gave me diagnostic steps to take to verify the remate was really dead, then shipped out a replacement in record time. Overall I'm very satisfied, if I had to criticise anything I'd say the remote has the usual IR issue of a too narrow arc in front of it in which it really responds to inputs, also the motirised volume knob is a little too coarse for my liking, but of course that's not a problem when operating the knob manually with your hand instead of the remote, there it operates nice and smoothly. Would still be interested in your thoughts of course in spite of now owning this item!

    Thomas: I’m looking to get monoblocks and considering Schiit Aegir vs PS Audio Stellar m700. I know they are in different price ranges. My current speakers are KEF LS50 but that could change. Looking for something that can handle demanding speakers, even the LRS ribbon speakers, and is considered something that I can keep and use with more expensive speakers for a long time. Something “true to source” which I guess would be considered “neutral”? Or is there other amp that I should consider instead?

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  4 года назад

      I think if you want something that can handle demanding speakers, Aegir might not be the way to go. I have never heard m700 so I have no idea. If you want something to drive LRS, you need power.

    Wait... Magnepan LRS & .7 speakers have a three to three & half month waiting period... but Thomas gets his LRS's and immediately loans them to a friend?? WTF?? LOL!
    I sill have not dived into the tube amplifier world yet. Although I think hybrid seems to be the better way to go. I wonder how the Willsenton R8 KT88/EL34 Tube Amp compares? 🤔 Great review. Cayin was COMPLETELY off my radar.

    Thomas, a suggestion, if you can, Try out Densen amplifiers.
    Followed them years ago. Reviewers called their products, not just high end, but Reference class.
    The man behind Buchard called them "Best he EVER heard"
    Although that amplifier was over 30 years old.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  4 года назад

      Oh, good to know. Thanks.

    • @Tbonyandsteak

      @@ThomasAndStereo They were as I remember quite innovative, Mass product amplifiers go by statistic and filters so their stats looks nice.
      What Densen found out that the filters also killed the sound and trancient. So they build an amplifier with led batteries and a huge line of capacitors to give the trancients.
      The line side was a massive copper wire floating beyond the print to avoid any influence of the signal.
      Yeah their design philosophy is quite a story in it self. XD
      And it blew the reviewers minds and ears.
      The signal to noise was huge since it was batteries. No noise at all, "silent as the grave" as the reviewers put it.
      This is what i can recal clearly, although I have not read any of their new products.

    What are your thoughts on pairing these with high sensitivity, full range speakers like Omegas? People always rave about pairing those speakers with low wattage SET class A amps but I'm wondering how this would pair and sound.
