      Flo I think the biggest point is that they don't sell that thing you were ridiculed for /to you/, but to white people only, while you still get ridiculed for it (f.e. white kids can wear dreads with no problem but black people lose jobs and education over their normal hair), or that they go as far as taking the meaning away from it

    as a chinese person, i feel the most problem i have with cultural appropriation is that they do it WRONG!!! hideous and tacky dragons/patterns (that are very diminishing of our real beautiful art and culture), nonsense chinese characters, and in the chinese legend mulan sure didn't have to fall in love into her supervisor for it to count as a happy ending! it is one thing to showcase and promote great cultures with heart, probably even make the culture greater, another if people just pillage it for shock value and profit, while misrepresenting the true culture.
    oh and, i hate it when people assume that chinese food is unhealthy or that "there are no vegetarian chinese food". of course there are great vegetarian chinese foods, most chinese people had been involuntary vegetarians for many thousand years...

    • @sdgdhpmbp
      @sdgdhpmbp 7 лет назад +42

      About Chinese food, I only know the American version of it, and they overkill with sweetening everything.
      Cultural appropriation is still a hard concept for me to grasp, mainly because I don't live in the US nor a country where my culture is the minority. However, I am alarmed by the severe denial of some here, like MomoTheBellyDancer's reply. This is one time where at least there's absolutely no harm in listening.

      Ann Lin Having lived in Taipei for a year, it was hard to find vegetarian food. Some places had one vegetarian dish but it was considered poor people's food, so it was also very bland (basically all the necessities for a healthy meal without anything added for pleasure). Then I went to Tainan and it was like walking through a vegetarian food heaven! It really depends on the place you're at, and let's be honest, Chinese people love meat as a luxury food. There's KFC's, McDonalds and fried meats and night markets everywhere (talking about what I've seen in Beijing and Taiwan only though).

    • @EchoSappho
      @EchoSappho 7 лет назад +10

      MomoTheBellyDancer They surely don't "overkill with sweetening" the Sichuan cuisine. My lord, after 6 years I can still feel my mouth burning! (And I ordered the "not spicy" dish xD ). I believe there are 4 cuisines in China: Sichuanese (spicy af), Cantonese (stir-fried, soy sauce, sesame oil etc), Shandong (seafood, vinegar) and Huaiyang (sweet). Also, a lot of cuisine in other parts of the world (like Europe, the USA, Canada) might be altered to please people with a different taste palate. For instance, "Chinese" food in my country is super sweet without the use of any other ingredient to give it a different flavour.

      I know back in the 70's white people would wear the native American headress, BUT they did it in order to understand the culture and befriend native American tribes. That's something I accept as cultural *appreciation*
      Nowadays, a headress is often worn during places like Coachella where people get wasted, puke, and high. No honor

    • @kdoe1305

    • @gracefulsunrise
      @gracefulsunrise 7 лет назад +11

      Yes, and I've always thought it has to do with whether the proper respect is given as well. So like when someone takes an important element/symbol from another culture that has a lot of cultural significance (like bindis for instance) and doesn't bother to learn the meanings and instead uses it for fashion or because it looks "cute".

    • @gracefulsunrise
      @gracefulsunrise 7 лет назад +5

      As a side note, that kind of disrespecting of important symbols can be done with anything. I remember not too long ago crosses were a fashionable symbol and I doubt everybody wearing them like printed on their leggings or whatever was Christian. It just tends to happen more often with symbols from other cultures, but it's really not okay to take any symbol of identity to a group of people and use it shallowly. The fashion companies are mainly at fault for producing it but people should know better than to buy this stuff too.

    I think cultural appropriation is when a person bashes a group of people for wearing something that came from the group people's culture. Calling it ghetto and such, just to turn around and wear it themselves and because of their race it's suddenly then considered fashionable.
    Saying that, sorry you can't use or wear this thing that comes from my culture because your not my race. Doesn't make any sense to me. Especially when you live in America which is a boiling pot of culture. And you don't bash or have anything against that race of people.

    Look at what has happened with Dia De Los Muertos.... people have learned about Mexican culture, they have even learned that death is just a part of life and life is to be celebrated. I think that sharing culture while educating is fine. Now making tons of cash off of it is quite another story. If you make your own cultural stuff as homage to a specific culture that's totally fine, if you mass produce it and don't give a fig, then, we got problems...

    Does anyone here know Big Mama Thornton? She was an African-American singer and the original recorder of the song "Hound Dog." However, her version of the song was overshadowed by Elvis Presley's version. Now, maybe it's just because people liked his version better, but I bet some people didn't know that it's a cover and think he was the original singer, when in reality the original singer was an African-American female.

    • @japhygato
      @japhygato 7 лет назад +3

      Anyone who knows or still cares about Elvis Presley knows it's a cover. You know Sinatra didn't write his own music either. Ray Charles 'appropriated' Eleanor Rigby. So did Arethra Franklin. So yeah, I don't see your point.

    • @bradleyogilvie8869
      @bradleyogilvie8869 7 лет назад +12

      japhygato My point was that it is an interesting history fact that is somewhat related to what they were talking about. Wasn't really trying to make a larger point than that and I apologize if it seemed that way.

    • @japhygato
      @japhygato 7 лет назад +1

      You didn't pay attention to the words I used. I made it clear that not many people knew/cared about Elvis anymore. The compensation original artists wasn't addressed in the initial comment that I responded to. It's an interesting point worth arguing but it is not related to the topic of the initial comment or this video so I'm not going to bite. Next question!?

    • @lennedalben1294
      @lennedalben1294 7 лет назад

      She may have been the "original singer," but she didn't write that song either. Back then, performers shared the same songs because the music industry assumed audiences expected artists to perform whatever was popular. Most songs were not written by the performers, but by dedicated writers. If anything, it was discouraged for performers to sing/play original music because the industry thought audiences wouldn't go for it.
      TL;DR this example, while popular to mention when cultural appropriation is brought up, doesn't apply when you consider that back then song writers and song performers were most often different people.

      Bradley Ogilvie Elvis took the 'soul' of the black community, he took the gospel, and the vocalization, and sold it to white people. Some people see it as him opening eyes, but I feel like if that were the case more people would know where he got 99% of his material. .

    OK but please no woman on woman crime against the models. It IS NOT EASY to be some "artist's" walking canvas. The shoes are horrible, you need to see that pic of their feet from Fashion Week a few years ago. Actually looked like the surface of the Moon right after a meteor shower. And I guess no one's allowed Band-aids. The fashion industry is brutal and cruel, they don't get worker's comp, and most models don't get rich.

    So look before you assume anything i'm not some racist internet troll.
    I'm black, i'm a democrat, and i'm a liberal, but i completely disagree with this video and this new . Don't get me wrong i do believe that that cultural appropriation is a real thing but on a much major scale when someone is doing in a racist manor such wearing black face while eating fried chicken or wearing a sombrero and a poncho and speaking in a fake racist latino accent that's a serious issue. But when it come down to stuff like Miley twerking or white rappers like Eminem or white people with a fro or dreadlocks that's just being petty, I truly believe that people like them appreciate the culture and are not trying to manipulate it isn't that why we live in america because of the inclusion and multiple cultures. Take me for an example yes i'm black but i'm not a big fan of the rap music, the the twerking, the slang, but i do love Japanese culture i watch anime i love japanese music, food, and history i even took japanese language classes and yes I even own a kimono and some day i want to go to japan. Also yes even though i enjoy this part of their culture i know i can never take the bad stuff that has happened to them because i know at the end of the day i know i'm not japanese but it does give me a further knowledge of who they are and help me sympathize with them. The same for white people most know they will never truly be black because they never had to go through the struggle of being black, but that doesn't mean they cant enjoy the gifts that black we have brought into the world such as black music, food, poems, history, religion, our language. Mainly because it teaches them about us and helps them come to a better understanding and that's a step in the right direction isn't it? also side note about that new correspondent i think its wrong how she choose its ok who gets to copy and who doesnt and what is ok to copy like what she did with kendall and beyonce

      While it is used as a buzzword, cultural appropriation isn't inherently a bad thing. Cultural appropriation is when one culture traits of another culture. It's a neutral term.
      It becomes problematical when a white person, such as myself, does it, because colonialism is so closely tied into our identities that it can be hard to separate the intent from that.
      For that matter, we do it to ourselves too. Especially the rich people who like to act poor, like drinking from mason glasses, eating "trailer cuisine", or living in one of hose tiny houses because doing these things is just so "quaint".

    I think the problem with race in America is that everyone collectively talks and thinks about it way too much. France is for example also a really diverse country, but it is for example prohibited by law to even perform a census and make distinctions between people based on race or religion. In America however it seems like your race or religion is your defining trait as a person. Crucially people need to understand that it doesn't matter at all whether or not there is cultural appropriation. What actually matters is that, by making this into the next big talking point and bringing race relations back to the forefront of debate, you are collectively stuck as a nation in a racial divide you helped exacerbate.

    Cultural appropriation is not a valid form of discrimination! What you think of as "cultural appropriation" is simply natural human tendency. Did Genghis Khan and the mongols not adapt from the people they encountered, did not Akbar and the mughals do the same in India? did not the Swahili kingdoms do the same thing because of Indian ocean trade? did not Native Americans do this when the "culturally appropriated" the horse from Spanish settlers? Humans adopted aspects of other humans that are either useful or pleasant to them. Indians adopted chili peppers from the Americas to create curry. Japanese people then took those ideas to create their version of curry. The first instance of dreadlocks in recorded history was roman legions and later vikings; all of whom are "white people". Speaking of which do we not agree that race is a social construct anyway? If a Caucasian american man learns spanish and falls in love with a latin american person and learns the cuisine and social norms is he "culturally appropriating" latin american culture? No he is not, we have actual problems like economic and social inequality, real racism, educational inequality, the threat of nuclear war, a president who is an idiot, and wide spread corruption at the highest level. Let's not get stuck on stupid things like fashion and let's not divide over inconsequential crap like "cultural appropriation" which is actually just natural innocuous human behavior.

    this is probably one of the worst sketches i have ever seen from the daily show. she talks about taking the good with the bad, but she gives passes to whomever she wants? beyonce gets a pass because: beyonce. sure, okay. a white man can't save jazz but a white man can save rap in 8 mile? is cultural appropriation okay for eminem because he's accepted in their culture(now)?
    and with the dreadlocks thing, workplaces are allowed to dictate how you look and dress. even in her own "source" if you look up the articles, they say that even if a white person had dreadlocks they still couldn't work there. that is literally the opposite of discrimination. at my own job, i'm not allowed to have unkempt facial hair or excessive beards. i've heard that locations like the restaurant twin peaks has weight checks for the waitresses to work there. this is just part of the job criteria and the physical appearance and image your company wants.
    i'm not white or black, but this definitely feels like an attack on white people in general as they are constantly called out throughout the segment. and they certainly get no credit. i've seen tons of people of all colors wear blonde wigs and such, but no one calls the appropriation. no one is up in arms.
    and don't get me started on the skinny shaming. if it was the other way around, i'm sure you know how things would have turned out. trevor noah is the only thing that saves this piece, with his level headedness.

And when called out about how Beyonce has done the same thing she just says Beyonce can do anything b/c she's Beyonce; which is a bs response to valid rebuttal. So then she ends the segment by basically saying white people can't appreciate aspects of other cultures b/c they are white? That's not subversive, funny, or contemplative; it's just being a discriminatory d-bag. Daily Show is going downhill as a source of social and political commentary.

      japhygato That's not what she's saying. Her point is that things like large buttocks, twerking, hip hop, and even jazz were considered "trashy" and "inferior" when black communities started them. When white people began to embrace these things, the black community wasn't even credited with the very things they created.

    • @mikeman3770
      @mikeman3770 7 лет назад +37

      Her final statement is the entire point of this segment. If you want to appreciate someone's culture go ahead, but just remember to take the good with the bad. Too many people want to look, sound and act like another culture because it makes them feel distinct and different, but when that culture is facing discrimination and fighting for its rights, these same people are silent and no where to be seen. If you love our culture, love our struggle as well, fight with us.

    • @125loopy
      @125loopy 7 лет назад +22

      Mike Man So how does one "accept the good with the bad"? Should white people who listen to rap music go in to the station and ask cops to randomly pull them over once a year so they can " suffer like the blacks do"? I hate how they don't actually address Beyonce on if what she did was considered cultural appropriation or not. They immediately dismiss her just because "she's Beyonce". If a smaller artist had done it they would have been canceled in a heartbeat. I was genuinely interested about hearing both sides on wither it was appropriation or appreciation. Dismissing an action based on someone's fame takes away the whole point of having a conversation.

      Appropriation has a specific context. The second example is cultural assimilation, where a minority tries to fit in with the majority to make their lives easier. This historically has often been mandated by law and nowadays tends to be about social discrimination. A white woman in cornrows is making a choice to engage with a single element of black culture while being unlikely to face the criticism that black women themselves do. Black hair is still highly politicised because afro hair texture historically came with serious consequences in the US (Chris Rock did a great documentary about this called Good Hair). For a white woman, it's just another hairstyle. If it were also that for black women, there wouldn't be an issue.

    So if I as a white woman wanted to wear a kimono because I found them beautiful and then I went out and researched the proper way to wear it, bought one from a Japanese seamstress and then had an expert in Japanese culture help me put it on I’m still appropriating the culture because I’m white. That sounds like a bunch of bullshit, I didn’t decide my race just like you didn’t decide yours. Because if I went the exact opposite way and said “well I would never wear a kimono cause I don’t like them.” Then I’d be considered a horrible racist

    -dismissed counterexamples
    -gave no evidence that this was causing any harm
    -white people aren't supposed to like big butts??
    -no one owns culture
